PNG fueling India's growth: Over 1.47 crore households, 45,000 businesses now connected
New Delhi: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas,
Hardeep Singh Puri
, on Friday highlighted the transformative impact of
Piped Natural Gas (PNG)
in India, noting that it is now powering over 1.47 crore households, around 45,000 commercial establishments, and more than 20,000 industries across the country.
In a post shared on social media platform X, Puri stated: "Over the last decade,
commercial PNG connections
have grown by 164 per cent and industrial connections by an unprecedented 308 per cent."
He emphasised that PNG is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
"It helps industries lower their fuel costs, thereby reducing production expenses and boosting profitability," Puri mentioned.
"Additionally, the 24x7 supply through pipelines ensures a seamless production process without storage challenges or fuel shortages," he emphasised.
The Union Minister pointed out that PNG is a safer energy option, reducing the risk of gas leaks, and is particularly beneficial for commercial centres and industries.
He added that its growing adoption is helping boost small and medium enterprises (SMEs), generate employment, and support local economies.
"The commercial adoption of PNG is playing a vital role in supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which in turn contributes to employment generation and strengthens local economies," Puri stated.
This comes as India witnessed a massive expansion in its
City Gas Distribution (CGD)
network over the past decade because of the government's sustained push.
As of now, the CGD infrastructure covers 100 per cent of the country's population, with record increases in both industrial and commercial PNG connections.
According to official data, commercial PNG connections have also risen to 45,000 -- an increase of 164 per cent --while industrial connections have grown by 308 per cent to cross the 20,000 mark.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, Puri also highlighted the transformative impact of the
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)
scheme.
Taking to X on May 5, the minister shared some facts to show the defining changes that the scheme has brought on the ground, particularly among the unprivileged strata of society.

Upper Bhavani Project Has Minimum Impact on Environment- Expert Panel
Chennai: An expert committee of the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change, after a field visit, observed that the proposed 1000MW Upper Bhavani Pumped Storage Project would have "minimum impact on environment". The project, undertaken by NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company Limited, aims to utilise existing reservoirs in The Nilgiris and received preliminary approval in April for an environmental impact assessment study and public hearing. The project is estimated to cost Rs 5,005.52 crore. The committee, led by chairman G J Chakrapani, conducted the site visit to assess the ecological, geological and environmental characteristics before considering environmental clearance. A report on the site visit indicated that the project area, from upper to lower intake, would have minimal impact on forest and environment due to majority of project components being underground. Geotechnical investigations are underway, involving drilling operations to evaluate rock mass characteristics and subsurface conditions. "The rock is favourable for tunnelling and underground work with minimal risk of instability," the report said. NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company Limited is a joint venture of NTPC Limited and Tangedco. The project utilises Upper Bhavani and Avalanche reservoirs, and there is no construction of new reservoirs. "This project may prove to be a model project that strikes a balance between development and environmental conservation due to its location in the ecological hotspot of The Nilgiris. Going by the selection and design of the project, this is going to have minimum impact on the environment," the committee said. The committee examined various parameters of the existing reservoirs and different water levels considered for the pumped storage project. The availability of abundant water during the monsoon season is expected to provide additional benefits. "The committee was apprised by the project proponent that the alignment was finalised avoiding the Shola Forest. These forests act as water towers of the region, and their protection was noted as a positive decision while planning the alignment," the report said. The location of the powerhouse was assessed, and EAC members expressed the view that the underground work would not affect the surface environment or create significant noise after the project's commissioning.

Bern [Switzerland], June 10 (ANI): Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal addressed Swiss industry leaders and innovators on Tuesday at the prestigious Swissmem Industry Day in Switzerland. Highlighting India's transformative growth story and vast opportunities for collaboration, Goyal extended a warm invitation to the Swiss business community to be active partners in India's journey towards becoming a USD 30-35 trillion economy by 2047, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry said in a release. Speaking at an event, Goyal said, 'I come to meet you with the aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians who dream as high as your towering Alps and who desire a better future. I come with an arm of friendship to the talented engineers, innovators, and entrepreneurs of Switzerland.' Quoting World Bank data, Goyal noted that extreme poverty in India has fallen to just 5 per cent, down by 270 million people in the last 11 years, and is expected to be eliminated in the near future. 'India today stands ready and willing to welcome global partners. We are a country on the move, full of opportunities,' he said.
