IMF reaches staff-level agreement for $2 billion disbursement to Argentina
A view of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) logo at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., U.S., November 24, 2024. REUTERS/Benoit Tessier/File Photo (Reuters) -The International Monetary Fund said on Thursday it has reached a staff-level agreement on the first review of its extended fund facility with Argentina, potentially unlocking about $2 billion for the economically embattled Latin American nation. The executive board meeting for the review, part of Argentina's $20 billion loan program with the lender, is expected to take place later this month, the IMF said in a statement. The IMF said the program had started off strongly "despite a more challenging external backdrop," with Argentina's inflation and poverty coming down while growth has ticked up. "Notably, Argentina has re-accessed international capital markets earlier than anticipated," the IMF added. The lender said that agreements had been reached with Argentina on safeguarding its fiscal anchor, building up reserves and making the drop in inflation last. Trump says countries will face tariffs ranging from 15% to 50%
US President Donald Trump (picture) suggested that he would not go below 15% as he sets so-called reciprocal tariff rates ahead of an Aug. 1 deadline, an indication that the floor for the increased levies was rising. 'We'll have a straight, simple tariff of anywhere between 15% and 50%,' Trump said Wednesday at an AI summit in Washington. 'A couple of — we have 50 because we haven't been getting along with those countries too well.' Trump's comment declaring that the tariffs would begin at 15% represented the latest twist in his effort to impose duties on nearly every US trading partner, and the latest indication that Trump was looking to more aggressively impose the levies on exports from countries outside the small group that so far has been able to broker trade frameworks with Washington. Trump earlier this month said that more than 150 countries would receive a letter including a tariff rate of 'probably 10 or 15%, we haven't decided yet.' Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CBS News on Sunday that small countries including 'the Latin American countries, the Caribbean countries, many countries in Africa' would have a baseline tariff of 10%. And at the first announcement of the tariffs in April, Trump unveiled a universal tariff of 10% on nearly every country. While Trump and his advisers initially expressed hopes of securing multiple deals, the president has been touting the tariff letters themselves as 'deals' and suggesting that he is uninterested in back-and-forth negotiations. Still, he has left the door open for countries to make agreements that could lower those rates. On Tuesday, Trump announced he was reducing a threatened 25% tariff on Japan to 15% in exchange for the country removing restrictions on some US products as well as offering to back a $550 billion investment fund. Other nations, including South Korea, India, and members of the European Union, are still pushing for an agreement before the heightened tariffs go into effect. On Wednesday, Trump said he would 'have a very, very simple tariff for some of the countries' because there were so many nations that 'you can't negotiate deals with everyone.' He said talks with the European Union were 'serious.' 'If they agree to open up the union to American businesses, then we will let them pay a lower tariff,' Trump said. –BLOOMBERG

Argentina loosens visa requirement for Chinese citizens
Argentina said on Monday that Chinese citizens with valid U.S. entry visas would not need Argentine visas to enter the country for tourism or business, a loosening of requirements that comes amid warming ties between Beijing and Buenos Aires. Argentina is a key supplier of products including beef, soy and lithium to the Chinese market and cooperation has deepened between the two countries in recent years. The decision by President Javier Millei was made to boost tourism and 'deactivate' mechanisms which have 'impeded the free development of Argentina's economy, of which tourism is a strategic area,' according to a statement on the Argentine government's website. It comes after China in May extended its visa-free policy to citizens of Argentina as well as those of Brazil, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, putting some of Latin America's largest economies on equal footing with many European and Asian countries. In line with the exemption adopted by China, it is 'deemed appropriate to adopt equivalent measures for Chinese nationals holding ordinary passports who enter for tourism and business purposes,' the statement said. China is Argentina's second-largest trading partner after Brazil and a key investor in infrastructure, energy and mining projects in the country. China has also extended a multi-billion dollar swap line to Argentina, mollifying billions of dollars in repayments that the Latin American nation needs to pay in the coming months. Argentina is also part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, which it joined in 2022. - Reuters
