New electric company scam has Wichitans on their toes
Suszette McKee's street is usually quiet. But recently, an electric company scam has broken the peace, soliciting McKee and some of her neighbors. The alleged company offered to lower her bill by removing ONCOR delivery charges, but McKee felt it was fishy after she asked for more information.
'He wouldn't tell me anything,' McKee said. 'He wouldn't give me any information. Do you know what company you work for? And then I asked him, do you have an ID? And he said yes, I do. And he's flipping around on his phone, and then he changed the subject and never showed me an ID or anything.'
When she declined the offer, the scammer left, and McKee then called Reliant Energy about the attempted scam. They said they've received many calls about scams of that nature. Had McKee fallen for it, she discovered the consequences could have been significant.
'What they could do is if they get your account number, they can just change your electric company without you even knowing it,' McKee said.
McKee said the scammers were wearing basic yellow safety vests and lanyards that said 'Simplicity' on them. Now that she's aware of the risks the scammer's plan posed, she wants her neighbors and others to be aware of them too.
'There are a couple of people on the neighborhood app that have said the same things happened to them,' McKee said. 'So, I just wanted people to be aware, you know, if somebody comes up and, especially if they ask to look at your electric bill, don't let them.'
McKee lived through the Terrible Tuesday tornadoes in 1979 and has experienced her fair share of scams stemming from that incident. As experienced as she is, she'll be even more wary about who she trusts with her electric bill.
'I'll go on the website, or I'll call, you know, the electric company and see what deals are best for me or something,' McKee said. 'But I wouldn't trust anybody to come to my door and want to sell me electric or anything.'
The Better Business Bureau is just one place with advice and resources available to prevent falling victims to scams. It's always important to do the proper research before hiring or making a financial decision involving another company.
So, with Wichita Falls already in the height of storm season, electric company scammers are just one more thing for Wichitans to watch out for.

'Neighbors have to frequently ask what is happening,' he said. 'Unmarked vehicles are pulling up. Men that are armed, with masks and unidentified clothing, are knocking on doors in predominantly Latino neighborhoods.' On Wednesday, there were several unmarked SUVs with tinted windows and armed men in plain clothing outside Nathanael Greene Middle School in Providence during the morning student drop-off, Morales said. Morales was informed they were Rhode Island State Police working with the US Marshals 'Violent Fugitive Task Force' and that 'they were just using the school parking lot to coordinate for the day,' he said. In a letter to McKee, Morales wrote the 'presence of unmarked vehicles and unidentified officers sparks immediate fear of detention, deportation, or family separation' for many immigrant Rhode Islanders. Asked Friday if he has any concerns that barring State Police from using unmarked vehicles could create issues for authorities working undercover in other cases, Morales said, 'During normal times, I would say yes.' 'But unfortunately we living during very dangerous times where unmarked vehicles are being used to literally kidnap immigrants,' he said. State Police Superintendent Darnell S. Weaver did not immediately return a request for comment Friday. Miguel Sanchez, Providence City Councilor for Ward 6, said a few city councilors are considering a 'similar request to the mayor and the police chief regarding unmarked vehicles.' 'Right now, we should leave absolutely no space or oxygen for confusion, for these types of terror actions that we're seeing by our federal agents,' he said. Morales also raised concern about State Police collaborating with the US Marshals Service. State Police have limited cooperation with ICE. Police do not assist the agency with civil immigration matters, In his letter to the governor, Morales wrote that although the US Marshals Service's 'Violent Fugitive Task Force' is 'primarily tasked with pursuing fugitives,' it has 'become entangled in immigration enforcement.' 'Under directives from the US Department of Justice earlier this year, Marshals have supported ICE operations by targeting and arresting undocumented residents,' Morales wrote. 'This overlap between criminal and immigration enforcement seriously threatens our values of due process and transparency. Rhode Islanders deserve to know whether and how our state police are cooperating with federal agents whose operations may ensnare residents in the immigration enforcement system.' Wichita Falls man jailed for alleged child sex crimes on social media app
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Law enforcement said a tip reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in May is what lead to the arrest of a Wichita Falls man Wednesday. According to arrest documents, police arrested Sean Anthony Flores, 27, on June 11, for warrants that alleged he committed child sex crimes. The arrest documents said that on May 14, a 'Cybertipline report' was made to the NCMEC about a person in the Wichita Falls area chatting online with users that he believed to be children. Police documents also said he solicited the other users for sexual photographs and uploaded and promoted videos of child pornography. Three other Cypertips were attached to the same IP address. A subpoena was served on the service provider, which led law enforcement to Flores' home. Other police documents stated that Flores was using the KIK application to chat with a user who was approximately 9 to 10 years old and asked for pictures with her shirt off. Police also said Flores sent multiple videos of child pornography on KIK. Police charged Flores with online solicitation of a minor and possession or promotion of child pornography.
