Why community-led solutions are our best bet against plastic pollution

Khaleej Times2 days ago

Every year on June 5, World Environment Day serves as a powerful reminder that the health of our planet is inextricably tied to our daily choices. This year's theme, 'Beat Plastic Pollution,' is especially urgent for the MENA region as we grapple with the mounting environmental cost of single-use plastics.
While global commitments and national policies play a crucial role, the most transformative solutions often begin closer to home, and they begin with the communities we live in. At Sharjah Sustainable City, we have seen firsthand how community-led initiatives can drive real, lasting change in reducing plastic waste.
Empowering communities to understand the impact of their choices and take ownership of sustainable practices is one of the most effective strategies to combat plastic waste. Though plastic pollution is a global issue; but it drills down to deeply personal choices. From the grocery bags we carry to the packaging we discard, every household decision adds up.
Communities have the power to model behavior, influence others, and create a ripple effect of change. When neighbors see each other reusing, recycling, and rethinking their plastic consumption, sustainability becomes a shared mission rather than an isolated effort. Education and engagement are the catalysts.
Sharjah Sustainable City was established with a vision to be more than just a residential development. Today, it is a blueprint for how cities of the future can nurture sustainability at a grassroots level. Through a range of initiatives, we actively engage our residents in reducing plastic usage and promoting circular practices.
As a strategic supporter of the Government of Sharjah's sustainable development objectives, the city is setting a positive trend for sustainable living in the emirate of Sharjah and the UAE. Extending over 7.2 million square feet of land in the Al Rahmaniya area of Sharjah, the City has become more than a residential development. It aims to inspire neighboring communities to adopt sustainable initiatives through education and community engagement.
During our annual Earth Week Challenge, for instance, we encouraged families to take part in sustainability-themed activities, including waste audits, plastic-free living days, and community clean-ups. These small, hands-on experiences are powerful tools for behavior change, especially for children who are growing up with a sense of responsibility toward the planet. From recycling plastics and using reusable bags to conserving water and using eco-friendly transportation around the city, residents bonded over ways to save the planet.
One of our most creative and practical initiatives is the upcycling workshop, where our community, especially young residents, recently bonded over fun painting sessions, transforming used tires into functional bike holders now installed throughout the community. In collaboration with Gulftainer, this initiative not only diverted waste from landfills but also sparked conversations around reuse and design thinking in sustainable living.
We also host regular recycling drives and awareness campaigns, using interactive sessions and gamification to make the learning process engaging for all age groups.
Partnerships to amplify impact
I believe no community is an island, and partnerships are essential to scaling impact. Our collaboration with local entities such as BEEAH and Sharjah City Municipality enables us to enhance our recycling infrastructure, run joint awareness campaigns, and contribute to the broader environmental goals of the emirate.
Through these partnerships, we've implemented dedicated recycling bins, conducted educational roadshows, and facilitated household waste segregation. The goal is to embed sustainable behavior not just within the borders of our residential community but across Sharjah and beyond.
Our local actions also align closely with the UAE's national efforts to tackle plastic pollution. With the ban on single-use plastic bags now in effect across several emirates, including Sharjah, the UAE is sending a strong and clear message that sustainability is no longer optional.
The UAE Circular Economy Policy, alongside other initiatives, reflects a decisive shift toward environmental accountability. As a community designed for net-zero energy living, we are proud to support and model these policies into action.
The way forward
Beating plastic pollution requires more than a one-off campaign or a new recycling bin. It demands a culture shift that starts with people and not just policies. Community-led solutions are our strongest defence because they tap into what matters most: shared values, human connection, and collective purpose.
This World Environment Day, we invite communities, policymakers, and businesses to look around and see the untapped potential of local action. If every neighborhood became a champion of sustainability, imagine the global change we could inspire.
At Sharjah Sustainable City, we're building that reality: one initiative, one household, one partnership at a time. By hosting community initiatives, workshops and events that emphasize resource conservation and renewable energy use, it creates a ripple effect of environmental awareness. This aligns with Sharjah's larger urbanization goals while positioning the city as a transformative model for sustainable living, fostering a low-carbon future across the emirate.
Let's beat plastic pollution together from the ground up!

President Sheikh Mohamed performed Eid Al Adha prayers at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi on Friday, alongside other UAE leaders. The Eid sermon addressed the value of sincerity, its concept and forms, and was titled Our Eid is Sincerity, state news agency Wam reported. Dr Khalifa Al Dhaheri, chancellor of the Mohamed bin Zayed University for Humanities, delivered the sermon and said a spiritual and national value holds deep relevance during Eid. A person should serve their homeland, family and community, he added. The President was joined at the mosque by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court; Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi; Sheikh Suroor bin Mohammed; Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation; Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior; Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed; and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Other senior officials included Sheikh Omar bin Zayed, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation; Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination; Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Khalifa, Adviser to the President; Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development Affairs and Martyrs' Families Affairs; Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs; Sheikh Zayed bin Mohamed; Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence; and Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad, Adviser to the President. After the sermon, Sheikh Mohamed was joined by sheikhs to recite Al Fatiha for UAE Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In a message posted on X, Sheikh Mohamed said: "To my brothers, the Rulers of the Emirates, citizens and residents of the UAE, and Muslims around the world, I wish you a blessed Eid Al Adha and pray for God to grant lasting peace and harmony to all." Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, also issued an Eid message. "We congratulate the Arab and Islamic nation after the blessed Eid Al Adha and we say to the pilgrims of the House of Allah: May God accept your Hajj and make it an accepted Hajj. We ask God to bring this great occasion back to us and to you with blessings, goodness, prosperity and peace." What is Eid Al Adha? Eid Al Adha, which means 'festival of the sacrifice', is the latter of the two Eid holidays celebrated across the Arab world, coming after Eid Al Fitr. Eid Al Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim being asked by God in a dream to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as a test of his faith. As with other religious holidays in the Emirates, it is a time for friends and family to gather, often over meals, and reflect on their lives and faith. It is customary for families who have the means to have a goat or sheep slaughtered and share the meat with relatives and the less fortunate. Employees in the public and private sectors have been granted leave from Thursday, June 5, to Sunday, June 8, to mark the holiday, with work to resume on Monday, June 9.

Pakistan govt begins cancelling passports of deportees

Pakistan's government has initiated cancelling the passports of deportees due to fake documents and beggary to discourage such practices. Data released by the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development showed that over 7,800 Pakistanis were deported from 2019 to 2025 for different charges, including beggary. All of these deportees' passports are being cancelled, the Pakistani media reported. Most of these deportees are from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which house a higher number of South Asian diaspora. As reported by Khaleej Times last month, the South Asian government stated that all deportees' passports will be cancelled upon arrival in the country and a first information report (FIR) will be filed against them for illegal practices. In addition, the government also announced that the deportees will be placed on the passport control list, ensuring that they don't travel abroad for five years. The Ministry of Interior has started placing these deportees' names on the passport control list to ensure that they don't travel abroad. The Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resources earlier this week discussed the matter of deportees and discussed steps taken to prevent such incidents. Millions of skilled Pakistani workers are employed in various countries, contributing immensely to the country's foreign exchange reserves. More than 5.5 million Pakistanis live and work in the UAE and other neighbouring Gulf countries. Millions of South Asian nationals visit Dubai, UAE and other regional countries for tourism. Pakistanis in the UAE have welcomed the government's decision to cancel the passports of deportees and put them on the passport control list for illegal practices because these initiatives will ease travel and visa restrictions for genuine visitors. The Senate Standing Committee recommended that the ministry initiate criminal proceedings against agencies for their involvement in sending deportees abroad. However, the question of legality of cancelling passports for crimes committed in foreign countries was also raised by a senator during the meeting.
