Heatwave sparks fire warnings across south-west England

Crews attend Wednesfield factory fire involving cardboard bales
About 35 firefighters are in attendance at a factory fire in Wolverhampton involving bales of Midlands Fire Service said they were called to Neachells Lane in Wednesfield just before 15:55 BST on six fire engines attended the scene, crewed by firefighters from the Fallings Park, Wednesbury, Willenhall, Bilston, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Tipton stations. Tourism boss reacts to new statistics from States of Guernsey
An increase in visitors from France to Guernsey has been hailed a "definite success story" by tourism bosses. Figures from the States of Guernsey revealed 12,000 French day-trippers visited the island in Q2 of 2025 - up from 7,000 in the same quarter last Beacom, chairman of the Tourism Management Board, said it welcomed the "significant rise" in visitors from Sillett, president of Guernsey Hospitality Association, said: "The large increase of visitors from France is a definite success story." The data provides information and statistics on travellers into and out of the island, as well as the accommodation they stayed at during their rise in French travellers was in part attributed to the appointment of Brittany Ferries to provide travel between the island, the UK and France until Beacom added: "I've personally noticed a far greater prevalence in French being spoken around St Peter Port and in other tourism hotspots within the island, which is wonderful to hear as we continue to build stronger ties with our French neighbours." 'Look to future' Mr Sillet said the data showed an increase in yacht arrivals which was "good to see" but the cruise ship visitor numbers "continue to disappoint". He added a drop in leisure visitors was concerning but there was a strong indicator of visitor satisfaction among the figures."So overall, a mixed set of stats that give us some reasons to be cheerful but also highlights areas that need attention," he said."If we can move forwards with a growth strategy at the airport we will be able to look to the future with... optimism."Last week, bosses at Guernsey Airport announced plans to redevelop the site and "improve operational efficiency".
