Red Sox Trade Idea Sends Walker Buehler to Dodgers for Pair of Pitching Prospects
Red Sox Trade Idea Sends Walker Buehler to Dodgers for Pair of Pitching Prospects originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There is still plenty of time for the Boston Red Sox to right the ship. A difficult start to the season has put the Red Sox at 29-33 and nine games back of the New York Yankees for the American League East lead. Boston is also four-and-a-half games back of the third Wild Card spot. Advertisement Should the Red Sox continue to underwhelm, they could become sellers at the trade deadline. It is a discouraging notion, considering the preseason hype surrounding this team, but not one without promise. Jeff Passan of ESPN had this to say about their trade assets: 'The Red Sox shouldn't be under .500. Regardless of the wounds -- both external and self-inflicted -- they are replete with enough talent to secure an AL playoff spot. If the ugliness continues, though, turning an eye toward 2026 is on the table.' 'They've got an attractive array of players. [Walker] Buehler or Lucas Giolito for the rotation. Aroldis Chapman at the back end of the bullpen and Brennan Bernardino or Justin Wilson for teams in need of a left-handed reliever.' Advertisement Passan also mentioned the Los Angeles Dodgers as a potential fit for Buehler. Here is what a reunion could look like: Red Sox receive: LHP Justin Wrobleski (No. 10), RHP Kyle Hurt (No. 20) Dodgers receive: RHP Walker Buehler Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Walker Buehler (0) pitches against the Baltimore Orioles during the fourth inning at Fenway Fluharty-Imagn Images Buehler is having a decent season, going 4-3 with a 4.44 ERA, a 4.73 FIP, and 42 strikeouts to 15 walks over 46 and 2/3 innings. However, he is on a one-year, $21.5 million deal, and Boston may look for organizational depth instead of losing him for nothing this offseason. The Red Sox likely want to keep Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello, and perhaps rookie Hunter Dobbins around for the long haul. Giolito is another tempting trade piece, but Buehler's history and familiarity with Los Angeles would make for a seamless fit. Advertisement Boston's return package is headlined by Wrobleski, a highly-regarded prospect who has not quite put it all together, yet. He has struggled over his 10 career MLB outings with a 6.15 ERA and a 6.13 FIP, and those figures are not much better than his Triple-A output (5.31 ERA over 40 and 2/3 innings). However, Wrobleski would also join a tantalizing group of Red Sox prospects with guys like Dobbins, Richard Fitts, and Luis Perales. Hurt is a sweetener in this hypothetical deal, and despite his current injury, he impressed in Triple-A in 2024 with a 3.07 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 14 and 2/3 innings. It is not an ideal situation for Boston, but one that could be necessary to avoid another season like 2025. A community rallies for the release of a beloved high schooler detained by ICE
Calls to 'Free Marcelo' are echoing beyond the high school campus of a Massachusetts town where a standout student was arrested by ICE over the weekend. A vocal contingent of students at the high school in Milford – many wearing white in a show of solidarity – staged a walkout on their campus Monday supporting classmate Marcelo Gomes da Silva, an 18-year-old junior who's now in immigration detention. The governor and a US senator have called for his release. And the school volleyball team – which has a home playoff game Tuesday night – is dedicating the match to him. 'He is a student who was learning every other subject like every other student who is excited about his future,' one classmate told affiliate WCVB on Monday. Gomes da Silva's detention is the latest example of the Trump administration widening its sights beyond violent criminals and gang members without legal status, and another likely case of a collateral arrest in which someone who is not the target of an investigation is swept up by immigration authorities. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Gomes da Silva on Saturday while the honors student was on his way to volleyball practice with two teammates, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said. Agents stopped the car and spoke with all three students. 'By the time I had turned back around, and I was done talking to (the) ICE agent, he was already in handcuffs and being put into the back of the car, which was devastating,' Yago Sampaio, 17, told WCVB. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the traffic stop that resulted in Gomes da Silva's detention, saying in a statement the target of the 'immigration enforcement operation' was the student's father. The statement said his father is in the country illegally and local authorities told ICE he'd been driving recklessly. 'Upon conducting the vehicle stop, officers arrested Marcelo (Gomes da Silva), an illegally present, 18-year-old Brazilian alien and the son of the intended target,' the statement said. 'While ICE officers never intended to apprehend (Gomes da Silva), he was found to be in the United States illegally and subject to removal proceedings, so officers made the arrest,' wrote Tricia McLaughlin, the department's assistant secretary for public affairs. Attorney Robin Nice, who is representing the high school student, insists her client has no criminal history and entered the country lawfully in 2013 using a B-2 visa, which allows foreign nationals to visit the United States for tourism or visiting family and friends. Gomes da Silva eventually received a student visa which has since lapsed, Nice said, though it's unclear when it expired; Nice told CNN she expects him to be eligible for asylum and he intends to apply. 'His strong community ties, consistent academic achievement, and involvement in positive extracurricular and faith-based activities underscore the fact that he poses no danger to the community and is not a flight risk,' Nice wrote in a statement to CNN. 'The actions by ICE do not make the community safer, they just sow fear among … immigrants and their loved ones.' Gomes da Silva remained in immigration detention Tuesday, according to ICE records. A federal judge issued an order Monday saying the young man must remain in Massachusetts for at least 72 hours, starting Sunday afternoon, to 'provide the judge who would be randomly assigned the action a fair opportunity to review the merits' of the case. Gomes da Silva is scheduled for an initial hearing before an immigration judge in Massachusetts on Thursday, his attorneys say, at which time he plans to request to be released on bond. Those who know him describe Gomes da Silva as active in his church and community. 'I think because of Marcelo and how he acted towards people, is why so many people came out here today to help support Marcelo,' a Milford High school student said in an interview with WCVB at Monday's student walkout. Healey, the governor, demanded answers from ICE following Gomes da Silva's arrest. 'ICE has had plenty of opportunity to examine whether or not they made a mistake,' Healey said in a video posted to her official X account. 'Unless ICE has additional information that would substantiate that this individual had some criminal involvement, he should be released.' The community launched a fundraiser to help with Gomes da Silva's legal and court expenses and to help support his family. As of Tuesday evening, it had raised nearly $40,000. Ahead of its Tuesday night home playoff game, the Milford High School boys volleyball team dedicated the match to their detained team member and wrote in an Instagram post, 'We will continue to pray and fight for our brother.' 'THIS IS FOR YOU MARCELO,' the team wrote in capital letters. 'PACK THE STANDS, NO EMPTY SEATS. WEAR WHITE. WE LOVE YOU MARCELO.' 'Marcelo should have been playing the drums at Milford High's graduation on Sunday, not trapped in a detention center,' said Sen. Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, in a video posted on X. 'This isn't about public safety,' Markey added. 'This about cruelty, and power, and fear engendered by the Trump administration. To the Milford community, I'm with you as we tell the Trump administration to keep its hands off your kids. And I am with you in calling on ICE to free Marcelo.' CNN's Caroll Alvarado contributed to this report.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani dings Max Fried's ERA with 2nd home run
The post Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani dings Max Fried's ERA with 2nd home run appeared first on ClutchPoints. Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Shohei Ohtani blasted two home runs in their World Series rematch against the New York Yankees. His first came in emphatic fashion, a towering 417-foot solo shot on the very first pitch. That blast tied the game 1-1 and electrified the Chavez Ravine crowd. Later, after working a three-ball, one-strike count, Ohtani hammered another homer to right field in the sixth inning. Advertisement As a result, the Dodgers' offense dealt a heavy blow to Max Fried's sparkling record. Fried had entered the game undefeated at 7–0 with a 1.29 ERA. However, Ohtani and the Dodgers' bats pushed that ERA up to 1.92. Over five innings, Fried gave up eight hits, six earned runs, three strikeouts, and two home runs, both to Ohtani. Under the bright Los Angeles lights, this latest clash between the two powerhouse franchises once again captivated the baseball world. It served as a dramatic sequel to last year's unforgettable World Series showdown. On the Yankees' side, Aaron Judge quickly set the tone with a solo homer. His shot fired up the Yankees dugout and, for a moment, silenced the Dodgers faithful. Moreover, the reigning AL MVP, on an absolute tear this season, raised his totals to 19 home runs and a staggering .392 batting average. Trent Grisham and Paul Goldschmidt also went deep, while Oswald Peraza added to the Yankees' scoring. After Ohtani's first-inning blast and a Tommy Edman score in the second, the Dodgers' offense truly exploded in the sixth. First, Freddie Freeman doubled to left, scoring Teoscar Hernández and advancing Will Smith to third. Then, Andy Pages followed with a single, bringing Smith home and moving Freeman to third. Advertisement Additionally, a fielder's choice and an intentional walk to Max Muncy set the stage for Michael Conforto. He drew a walk, forcing in Pages and giving the Dodgers a 6–5 lead. In the seventh, Pages delivered again with a two-run single, scoring Smith and Freeman to extend the lead to 8–5. Currently, the Yankees sit atop the AL East, while the Dodgers command the NL West. Both clubs continue to dominate their leagues. Fueled by Ohtani's homers and big hits from Freeman, Smith, and Pages, the Dodgers successfully flipped the momentum in a thrilling comeback. With both rosters stacked and fanbases roaring, this series promises to be a true heavyweight showdown. Every pitch, every swing, and every inning could deliver October-level drama, and fans won't want to miss a second of it.
