Samsung invests $10m in US Alzheimer's diagnostics firm C2N
C2N specializes in analyzing protein biomarkers — biological indicators used to track disease progression and drug responses — found in extremely low concentrations in the blood. Leveraging this technology, the company has developed a blood test for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease and has participated in global clinical trials for Alzheimer's treatments and other central nervous system disorders.
C2N's blood test provides a safer and more cost-effective alternative to traditional diagnostic methods, such as amyloid PET-CT scans and cerebrospinal fluid tests. The test enables precise measurement of multiple Alzheimer's-related proteins, including amyloid-beta, making Alzheimer's diagnoses more accessible and convenient.
The company plans to seek FDA approval for its test within this year. C2N CEO Joel Braunstein said the investment will support global expansion efforts.
'C2N Diagnostics has the potential to lead pharmaceutical research support and related services,' said Kim Jae-woo, vice president of Samsung C&T's life science division. 'This investment secures Samsung's foothold in the sector.'
The Life Science Fund, managed by Samsung Venture Investment, was established with 240 billion won ($180 million) to foster next-generation biotechnologies. Previous investments include Araris Biotech and AimedBio, which specialize in antibody-drug conjugates, and Generate Biomedicines, which develops protein-based biopharmaceuticals using machine learning.

Korean Air, Anduril join hands to co-develop uncrewed aircraft
South Korea's leading air carrier, Korean Air, announced on Thursday that it has signed a teaming agreement with US defense technology company Anduril to establish a strategic partnership in the uncrewed aerial vehicle sector across Korea and the broader Asia-Pacific region. The signing ceremony took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul, attended by key executives including Lim Jin-kyu, senior vice president of Korean Air's aerospace division, and Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril. The agreement builds upon a memorandum of understanding signed in April, through which both companies have been actively discussing areas of collaboration. Under the agreement, the two sides aim to co-develop Korean-tailored UAV models based on Anduril's products, explore licensed production and consider the establishment of an Asia-based UAV manufacturing hub, to be known as Arsenal South Korea. Their shared goal is to expand into the Asia-Pacific UAV market by focusing on mission-autonomous drone systems. Additional discussions are to take place following this agreement, with the aim of signing a final deal early next year. 'This collaboration between a leading UAV developer in Korea and an artificial intelligence-powered defense technology company marks the turning point in the global UAV market,' said a Korean Air official. 'We will further contribute to Korea's defense autonomy.'

Lucid EV sets world record with Samsung SDI battery
Samsung SD announced Thursday that the Lucid Air Grand Touring, a premium electric vehicle powered by its nickel-cobalt-aluminum battery, has been listed in the Guinness World Records for the longest driving range on a single charge. According to the company, the luxury EV from US-based Lucid Motors traveled 1,205 kilometers without recharging during a test drive between St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Munich — surpassing the previous record by 160 kilometers. The long-range model is the result of a strategic partnership between Samsung SDI and Lucid Motors established in 2016. The vehicle is powered by 6,600 units of Samsung SDI's 21700 cylindrical batteries — 21 millimeters in diameter and 70 mm in height — and features a high-performance powertrain that delivers up to 831 horsepower. Samsung SDI used a silicon-based anode in its NCA battery to achieve high capacity and extended lifespan. The battery also offers fast-charging capabilities, enabling the vehicle to travel 400 kilometers with just 16 minutes of charging. "Samsung SDI's cylindrical batteries are powering the world's longest-range EV. This proves the company's top-tier technological capabilities,' a Samsung SDI official said. 'We will continue to grow our global market share by strengthening collaboration with Lucid Motors and accelerating the development of differentiated performance and safety features.'

HD Hyundai, Anduril bolster ties on uncrewed ships
Korean shipbuilding giant HD Hyundai announced Thursday that it has signed a new partnership with US-based artificial intelligence defense firm Anduril Industries, expanding their existing collaboration to develop an uncrewed surface vessel. The agreement, which builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in April, was formalized at HD Hyundai's global research and development center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, on the same day. The signing ceremony was attended by Joo Won-ho, head of the naval and special ship business unit at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Palmer Luckey, co-founder of Anduril. Under the new partnership, HD Hyundai will equip its uncrewed surface vessels with Anduril's autonomous mission systems for deployment in the Korean market. It will also design and build vessels developed by Anduril for sale in the US market, incorporating HD Hyundai's autonomous navigation technologies. The two firms also plan to co-develop a prototype uncrewed surface vessel, which will be showcased in both Korea and the US. The prototype is expected to debut in Korea by 2027. 'Uncrewed surface vessels are the essence and necessity of future naval warfare,' said Joo. 'Through our collaboration with Anduril, which possesses the world's most advanced autonomous mission systems, we aim to develop the world's leading uncrewed battleship.' As part of its broader strategy to participate in the US' efforts to expand domestic shipbuilding capabilities, HD Hyundai has been strengthening ties with the US shipbuilding sector. The company has partnered with Edison Chouest Offshore to build commercial vessels in the country, and in April it signed an agreement with Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest US defense shipbuilder.
