Injured Rabada ruled out of ODI series for South Africa. Australia fields first in Game 1
The Australians, coming off a 2-1 win in the T20 series , won the toss and elected to field in Cairns to start the one-day international portion of the tour.
This is the first ODI between the teams since Australia beat South Africa in the 2023 World Cup semifinals. Their scheduled Champions Trophy meeting in March was washed out.
Power hitter Dewald Brevis and allrounder Prenelan Subrayen were selected to make their ODI debuts for South Africa, and Temba Bavuma returned for his first match since leading the Proteas to the World Test Championship with a victory over Australia in the final at Lord's.
The 30-year-old Rabada underwent scans on Monday which confirmed inflammation in his right ankle. Rabada will stay with the team in Australia and undergo rehabilitation.
Kewena Maphaka, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in last week's T20 series, replaced Rabada in the squad but was left out of the playing XI for the first ODI.
Marnus Labuschagne returned to the Australian team after being dropped from the recent test series victory in the Caribbean.
Australia opted to play Alex Carey as a specialist batter and use Josh Inglis as the wicketkeeper.

49ers injury woes continue as key players return and others sidelined
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The injury list for the San Francisco 49ers went through a bit of a shuffle with a few key players returning from injuries Tuesday while significant questions remain on several others just a week before NFL rosters will be cut to 53 players. Starting cornerback Renardo Green was at practice for the first time since injuring his hamstring late last month and running back Isaac Guerendo returned after missing about two weeks with a shoulder injury. San Francisco got a handful of other players back on Tuesday who had missed less time with defensive linemen Nick Bosa, Jordan Elliott, Sam Okuayinonu and safety Jason Pinnock back. But the news wasn't all good with backup quarterback Mac Jones sidelined this week with a knee injury that is not expected to keep him out for the season opener and backup running back and special teams stalwart Patrick Taylor going down with a season-ending shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve. With several other players still nursing injuries that are keeping them out of practice and putting their availability for Week 1 in question, planning the initial 53-man roster is a difficult proposition. 'It's a really complicated thing that we really can't talk about enough because it's always changing each day,' coach Kyle Shanahan said. 'It will be all the way up to when we make that decision.' The biggest questions appear to be at offensive line where left guard Ben Bartch (left elbow) and and right guard Dominick Puni (right guard) are out with injuries that could sideline them for Week 1 and at receiver where Jauan Jennings is still out with a calf injury. Jennings, who is also seeking a new contract, has been sidelined most of camp with a calf injury that also kept him out of the offseason program. The Niners need to get him back on the field soon if he is going to be ready for the opener on Sept. 7 in Seattle. 'Any player, not just Jauan or anyone, but people need to practice,' Shanahan said. 'They need to get ready to play an NFL season or you end up getting hurt. So, hopefully he can get his health back so he can get that out there and start practicing. Just running routes, doing things like that.' First-round rookie defensive end Mykel Williams was expected back this week but is still having issues with his knee so will be out at least another week. Rookie defensive tackle C.J. West is also out at least this week with a knee injury. Rookie nickelback Upton Stout didn't practice Tuesday because of a calf injury but could return soon. Several other players were also out Tuesday, including receiver Jordan Watkins; defensive backs Tre Brown, Richie Grant and Fabian Moreau; and running back Jordan James as injuries have once again been a major issue for San Francisco this summer. 'Obviously we have too many guys down,' Shanahan said. "So we've got to look into all that stuff and figure out whatever we can do better.' With Jones unavailable for the preseason finale, the Niners brought back Nate Sudfeld on a one-year deal to take Taylor's place on the roster. Sudfeld spend the 2022 season in camp with San Francisco before getting beat out by Brock Purdy. With Purdy expected to sit out or play only a series or two on Saturday night, Shanahan needed another quarterback along with Carter Bradley to play against the Chargers. The 49ers will likely have several players on injured lists after cut-down day with receiver Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and safety Malik Mustapha (knee) expected to miss at least the first four games on the physically unable to perform list, and rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke (knee) slated to start the season on the non-football injury list. Defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (knee) still has been unable to practice all of camp and could open the season on the physically unable to perform list. Promising undrafted rookie running back Corey Kiner went down with a 'serious' high ankle sprain last week and is a candidate to start the season on short-term injured reserve along with defensive tackle Kevin Givens (pectoral). The Niners can put two players on IR next week who don't count on the 53-man roster and will be eligible to return after missing at least four weeks. ___ AP NFL:

Roosters make call on Cherry-Evans backflip as 'awful' detail comes to light
The Sydney Roosters have reportedly denied suggestions they'll backflip on an agreement to sign Daly Cherry-Evans for 2026, while DCE's camp have shot down claims he might retire rather than play on. Earlier this week, leading commentators Andrew Voss and Phil Rothfield both suggested Cherry-Evans will retire at season's end rather than complete a reported switch to the Roosters. But reporter Ben Dobbin revealed on Triple M radio on Tuesday that Cherry-Evans won't be retiring and the Roosters won't be backflipping. Dobbin said he'd spoken to DCE's camp, who stated he'll definitely be playing on in 2026. "All roads have been pointing to the Roosters," Dobbin said. "There's been calls in different circles for Daly Cherry-Evans to retire at the end of the season. I can tell you, at this stage, that definitely will not be happening. "Daly Cherry-Evans plans on playing in 2026 and will be at the Sydney Roosters. There has been no deal signed. Talk that there has been a contract or a deal done is not right. "I have spoken to Daly Cherry Evans' camp today and at this stage, they are 100 per cent playing on next year. They are hopefully going to do a deal with Sydney Roosters. There are no other clubs chasing Daly Cherry-Evans other than the Sydney Roosters." When asked if the Roosters had gotten cold feet due to Cherry-Evans' poor form and the emergence of youngster Hugo Savala, Dobbin stated: "This is the narrative you're reading, it's not true. The only club he will be playing for is the Sydney Roosters." Matty Johns calls out 'toxic' and 'awful' Manly environment Speaking on SEN radio on Tuesday afternoon, Matty Johns said a switch to the Roosters would be just the tonic that Cherry-Evans needs. "I think he will play on and I think we're being premature saying it'll be a dud signing," Johns said. "What's going on at Manly at the moment, it's seems fairly toxic and a place where I think anyone would struggle to play good football. There is so much going on there. Daly is at a certain age, but I think the change might be exactly what he needs." RELATED: Souths cop more bad news about Latrell amid Panthers mystery Panthers sign playmaker from Knights as 10 could depart Penrith Johns said young halves Savala and Sam Walker will benefit from having Cherry-Evans around. "Hugo and Sam are firing at the moment but there is no guarantee long term," he added. "Hugo has a lot to learn, and the most important thing is patience. It wouldn't hurt him to play 14 if Daly is there. It won't hurt his career. "I don't think the Chooks are headed for any kind of disaster if Daly is heading there. I've heard that Daly and Robbo (Trent Robinson) catch up quite a bit, they're like-minded fellas and one day might work alongside each other. I think right now Manly would be an awful place to be." Darren Lockyer questions why announcement hasn't been made Cherry-Evans will reportedly play one final year with the Roosters in 2026 before moving into a coaching role at the club. Meanwhile, legendary half Darren Lockyer has questioned why Cherry-Evans didn't state at the start of the year what his intentions were for 2026, claiming the uncertainty has derailed Manly's season. The Sea Eagles have lost four on the trot and are four points adrift of the top-eight with just three rounds remaining. "Wherever he's going, not announcing it has just prolonged the speculation," Lockyer said on the QLDer podcast. "I still to this day don't know why it hasn't been announced. I think it's been a massive distraction for him and the club."
