Manhunt for ex-US soldier suspected of killing 4 in Montana bar
The shooting happened on Friday at about 10:30am (16:30 GMT) at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, with four people pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation.
The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old military veteran Michael Paul Brown. Brown lived next door to the bar, according to public records and owner David Gwerder.
Gwerder, who was not there at the time of the incident, said a bartender and three patrons were killed before Brown fled the scene.
'He knew everybody that was in that bar. I guarantee you that,' Gwerder said. 'He didn't have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped.'
Brown's home in Anaconda – a town of about 9,000 people, located in southwest Montana about 109 miles (175km) west of the city of Bozeman – was cleared by a SWAT team.
Montana Senator Steve Daines said a 'massive manhunt' is under way, aided by drones.
Authorities said Brown was last seen in the Stump Town area, just west of Anaconda, and he is 'believed to be armed and dangerous'.
He should not be approached if seen, the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Law Enforcement Center said in a social media post, while Anaconda residents have been instructed to stay home and lock their doors.
More than a dozen police officers have converged on Stump Town, locking it down so no one is allowed in or out as police search for Brown in a wooded, mountainous area.
Randy Clark, a retired police officer who lives in the area, said a police helicopter hovered over a nearby mountainside as officers moved among the trees.
A US army spokesperson said Brown served as an armour crewman from 2001 to 2005 and was deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005. Brown was also in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to 2009.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte said in a social media post that he was 'closely monitoring the situation involving an active shooter in Anaconda'.
Our hearts are with the community of Anaconda, Montana, where four lives were lost in a senseless bar shooting.
Law enforcement is actively searching for the suspect, Michael Paul Brown, who remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. We stand with the brave officers… pic.twitter.com/nHmlib8D2o

Suspect in custody after five soldiers shot at US Army's Fort Stewart
Five soldiers were shot during an incident at the United States Army's Fort Stewart in the southern US state of Georgia before the suspected shooter was taken into custody, military authorities have said. Parts of the military facility were placed on temporary lockdown on Wednesday after reports of an active shooter. The five wounded soldiers were treated at the site of the shooting before being transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital. 'There is no active threat to the community,' a social media post from Fort Stewart says. The identity of the suspect and the circumstances around the shooting remain unclear, along with the conditions of the soldiers who were injured. The US Army says that it is investigating the incident. Fort Stewart says that law enforcement first responded to reports of a possible shooting in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area at 10:56am ET (14:56 GMT). The base was locked down shortly after 11:04am (15:04 GMT), and the alleged shooter was apprehended at 11:35am (15:35 GMT). The lockdown was in place for about one hour, and three schools outside the base were also placed on lockdown out of what the Liberty County School System said was an 'abundance of caution'. Located about 64km (40 miles) southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest US Army post east of the Mississippi River. It's home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and their family members. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said in a social media post that he was 'saddened by today's tragedy'. 'We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,' Kemp added. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also stated in a social media post that US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident and is following developments.

Five soldiers shot at US Army's Fort Stewart in Georgia, base reports
Five soldiers have been shot at the Army's Fort Stewart in Georgia, the base said in a social media post. Parts of Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia on Wednesday were locked down after an active shooter was reported on the sprawling Army post, a spokesperson said. A post on Fort Stewart's Facebook page told all personnel in the locked-down area to 'stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors.' Located about 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River. It's home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and family members. 'Due to the lockdown status, all gates on Fort Stewart are currently closed,' the fort said on social media. The shooter was in the area of the 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team, the fort said online. The fort's three elementary schools are also on lockdown, Community Superintendent Brian Perry told WTOC-TV. The schools have nearly 1,400 students, according to the Department of Defense. Three schools just outside the base are taking steps similar to a lockdown 'out of an abundance of caution,' the Liberty County School System said online. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is in contact with responding law enforcement, he said in a statement. US Rep. Buddy Carter, whose district includes Fort Stewart, said in an online post that he's monitoring the shooting. More to come…
