Korean Supreme Court rules 'Baby Shark' not a case of plagiarism; scores victory for Pinkfong in 3 Million copyright case
After a six-year battle, the South Korea's Supreme Court has ruled that Pinkfong's hit children's song 'Baby Shark', is not a case of plagiarism.
The dispute began when American composer Jonathan Robert Wright alleged that Pinkfong's 2015 Korean version, and the latter 2016 English version, were copied from his 2011 arrangement of the folk tune.
He demanded damages of about ₩3 million. But, according to the court's ruling, both his work and Pinkfong's are rearrangements of a traditional song with no single copyright owner.
Reason Behind The Verdict
According to the judgment reported by Yonhap News, Wright's version lacked enough originality to be considered a secondary copyrighted work.
The Korean Copyright Commission's evaluation, cited by the court, found that his 2011 song added only instruments like electric guitar and synthesizers to a melody already sung for generations in camps and classrooms.
Under Korean law, familiarity and widespread oral tradition outweighed his claim to exclusive ownership.
Song's Record-Breaking 10 billion views
Pinkfong (then SmartStudy) gave 'Baby Shark' its now-iconic "Ah~ gi shark, doo roo doo roo" hook and bouncy animation in 2015, followed by a bubbly English version in 2016. That version went from a local children's song to world's most-viewed YouTube video in November 2020, and in January 2022, it became the first video ever to surpass 10 billion views (YouTube public data).
A win for creativity
The Supreme Court's verdict, grounded in legal reasoning but resonating with playgrounds worldwide, protects Pinkfong's adaptations while affirming that some songs are part of humanity's collective memory.

Sunita Ahuja Breaks Down, Addresses Govinda Divorce Rumours: 'Mera Ghar Todne Ki Koshish...'
Last Updated: Govinda and Sunita Ahuja have been married for 37 years now and are parents to two children – Tina and Yashvardan. Govinda's wife, Sunita Ahuja, broke down in her first YouTube vlog, addressing her divorce rumours. The couple has been married for 37 years now and are parents to two children – Tina and Yashvardan. However, earlier this year, it was reported that Govinda and Sunita were planning to part ways. Sunita Ahuja Addresses Divorce Rumours In her vlog, Sunita visited the Maa Mahakali Temple, where a priest asked her why she prayed to the goddess for the first time. At this, Sunita broke down and said, 'When I met Govinda, I prayed that I get married to him and that my life goes well." She then addressed her divorce rumours and added, 'Koi bhi mera ghar todne ki koshish kare…jo bhi mera dil dukhayega, yeh Maa Kali sabke gale kaat k rakh degi. Ek acche insaan ko, acchi aurat ko dukh dena acchi baat nahi hai. Mujhe aur kisipe vishwas nahi hai (Whoever tries to break my home…whoever hurts me, Maa Kali will punish them. It's not right to hurt a good person, a good woman. I trust no one else)." When Govinda And Sunita Ahuja's Divorce Rumours Made Headlines In February this year, several media reports claimed that Govinda and Sunita Ahuja had decided to part ways owing to constant disagreements and varied lifestyles. It was also said that Govinda's growing closeness to a 30-year-old Marathi actress is reportedly a major factor in their alleged split. Later, their lawyer also stated that even though the couple had filed for divorce six months back, they were getting back together. Lalit Bindal, who is also the actor's family friend, shared that Govinda and Sunita are 'going strong" and that they will always be together. Sunita Also Addressed Divorce Rumours Previously Later, Sunita also called the chatter 'baseless' and stressed that no one should believe rumours without hearing the truth directly from those involved. 'Jis din confirm hoga, ya mere aur Govinda ke mu se aap log sunoge, vo alag baat hai," she said. 'But I don't think Govinda can live without me, nor can I live without Govinda. And Govinda can never leave his family for any stupid person or stupid woman." First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. (Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Two decades after its release, Jayaraj 's 2004 Malayalam film '4 The People' is enjoying an unexpected second life in 2025. Social media timelines, particularly on X, are flooded with nostalgic posts and excited rediscoveries of the vigilante thriller that once turned heads for its audacity. A 2004 film finding fresh relevance The story following four college students who take the law into their own hands to fight corruption, feels eerily relevant today, as debates over governance, accountability, and youth-led activism dominate India's political discourse. Many online users call it 'ahead of its time,' pointing to how its central message mirrors current frustrations with systemic issues. Film buffs on platforms like IMDb praise its raw energy and note how it influenced later vigilante dramas across Indian cinema. "I believe there is an audience for a slightly more nuanced film" - Director Jayaraj Mollywood director Jayaraj is surely one of the unique filmmakers who doesn't love to remain in a comfort zone. From drama to horror, the ace director who made 'Four the People' has indeed placed his hands on every genres. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, the filmmaker said, "'I believe there is an audience for a slightly more nuanced film. Films where everything is not so obvious to you (audience), or every thought of the character is not spelled out." Talking about his film 'Oru Perumgaliyattam', Jayaraj said, "'Oru Perumgaliyattam' also goes into that category. In this (Mollywood) industry, we feel there is also space for this kind of cinema.' A cult revival The film's current wave of popularity is also thanks to accessibility. Available on Amazon Prime and YouTube, 4 The People is reaching audiences who either missed it the first time or are eager to revisit it. Regional cinema enthusiasts frequently list it alongside other iconic early-2000s films that shaped an era. This year marks the movie's 21st anniversary, and media retrospectives — along with fan campaigns — have only intensified the buzz. From memes celebrating its dialogues to posts lauding Bharath, Arun, and Jayaraj's vision, the film has transitioned from a hit of its time to a cultural reference point. In 2025, '4 The People' isn't just a film remembered fondly — it's a story reinterpreted through the lens of a generation still wrestling with the same questions it asked 21 years ago.
