Court granted Sharmistha Panoli protection after threats on social media: Lawyer

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 6 (ANI): Following the interim bail granted to Law student Sharmistha Panoli by Calcutta High Court, her lawyer Kanchan Jaju said that the court has granted her protection after she received threats on social media. Advocate Kanchan Jaju said that the bail procedure is in process, and after the signature of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), it would be sent to jail, and she would be released at 5 pm. 'The court has granted her protection. She has received threats, and after the court's order to take action against any threat, there should be a reduction in it. On social media, she is receiving a lot of threats. Her parents are happy she got bail,' she added. MD Saimimuddin said, 'One of the conditions of bail was that the bond would be furnished to the satisfaction of the learned CJM at Alipur. Bond has been furnished. We have deposited an affidavit. We will send the release order from the court soon. There are some formalities of the correctional home. After that, she will be released. She will be released at 5 or 6 pm.' Sharmistha Panoli, arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a social media post, was granted interim bail by Calcutta High Court on Thursday. The court directed her to cooperate with the investigation, not leave the country, and furnished bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also ordered appropriate police protection for her. Her father, Prithviraj Panoli, expressed relief, citing her health issues, including kidney problems and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Prithviraj Panoli said, 'I am very happy. No father would like his daughter to stay in jail. Her mother was crying for a long time, but she is very happy now. There were two concerns: her kidney problem and ADHD. She needs regular medicine, but since we didn't have a prescription, the medicine wasn't given in jail.' 'Also, when the video was posted, we found out after two days and told her to delete it. We hoped this would be a lesson for her, and that she would do better in the future,' Panoli said. According to Sharmistha's lawyer, DP Singh, bail was granted on three conditions: Sharmistha must surrender her passport, cooperate with the investigation, and sign a bail bond. Singh argued that Sharmistha is a victim of circumstances and that her social media post was a defence of her country based on videos she had seen. He questioned the severity of the response, suggesting that the community's reaction was disproportionate to her actions. The 22-year-old law student from Pune, Sharmistha Panoli, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on May 30, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of a community with a video on Operation Sindoor. The Instagram clip was reportedly derogatory towards a particular religion. However, Panoli deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15. (ANI)

TMC MLA calls 'Operation Sindoor a drama in coordination with Pakistan', BJP demands action

Kolkata: Major controversy erupted over comments of Trinamool Pandabeswar MLA Narendranath Chakraborty 's on ' Operation SIndoor '. The TMC MLA called "Op Sindoor as India's gameplan and drama in coordination with Pakistan", which was scripted. Meanwhile, BJP has gone on an all-out attack against the MLA with Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari and BJP state President Sukanta Majumdar attacking the ruling party lawmaker. BJP Minority cell has lodged a complaint in Kulti Police Station against Chakraborty. The Pandabeswar MLA of Trinamool Congress , during a public rally, said, 'How did Sindoor Khela have been started by the BJP government! It is a war-war game. There has been a settlement done with Pakistan.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo 'If you have gone to Kashmir, you must have seen an army standing with guns at every ten feet distance,' the Trinamool MLA said, adding, 'It is not only Pahalgam but in every tourist spot in Kashmir, heavy security arrangements are witnessed. Barbed wires can be seen as road blockades. But a few days before the terror attack in Pahalgam, all forces were removed. It is a drama,' the MLA alleged. 'The terrorists have killed so many people. What was said before killing? Are you Hindu, do you wear sindoor or can you read Kalma ? If they said 'no', came 'boom'…They (the Centre) could not find the terrorists as it is a game plan and they played a Hindutva game, a script which was enacted. Everything was fitting,' Narendranath Chakrabarty said. Chakraborty is also District President of Trinamool's Paschim Bardhaman Organizational District. Live Events 'The terrorists could not be traced. They will never be found. It is a game plan,' the MLA said. BJP Minority cell has lodged a complaint in Kulti Police Station against Narendranath Chakraborty LoP Suvendu Adhikari said the lawmaker should be taken into custody by NIA and quizzed. Responding to Pandabeswar Trinamool MLA's comments, Adhikari said, 'When the Pandabeswar MLA knows everything about Operation Sindoor, Chakraborty should be summoned by the NIA. He should be kept in custody and interrogated. The Pandabeswar MLA was close to Mamata Banerjee . He is an international expert now." Adhikari took to the X Handle and said, '…If an elected representative like Chakraborty has prior knowledge or insights into such a heinous act, it is imperative that the NIA take him into custody for questioning to uncover the source and credibility of his information.' 'The outrageous and condemnable remark made by Pandabeswar's TMC MLA Narendranath Chakraborty clearly reveals the extent to which the Trinamool Congress is trying to spread anti-national venom in West Bengal. Wearing the party's scarf and standing on a public stage with the symbol, he shamelessly claimed that 'India had a fitting with Pakistan'! This statement is not just objectionable—it is blatantly anti-national. Sadly, he is not the first. Several other TMC leaders, including the failed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself, have made indecent and disgraceful remarks about 'Operation Sindoor,' BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar posted in his X Handle.

Gujarat Congress leader arrested for alleged ‘morale-breaking' posts about Operation Sindoor

Gujarat Congress leader Rajesh Soni was arrested on Friday for posting allegedly misleading and 'morale-breaking' content about Operation Sindoor on social media, PTI reported. Soni was booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to acts endangering India's sovereignty, unity and integrity, and statements conducing to public mischief, PTI quoted Superintendent of Police (CID-Cyber Crime) Bharatsinh Tank as saying. The first information report in the matter was filed based on a complaint by a sub-inspector in Gandhinagar's cybercrime cell. Soni had shared videos and images on Facebook relating to Operation Sindoor, the Rafale deal and other sensitive matters, The New Indian Express quoted the complaint as having alleged. It also alleged that Soni's social media posts were meant to undermine the morale of the Indian Army, cast doubt on its duties, erode public trust in the armed forces and raise alarm about national security. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated on May 7 when the Indian military carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22. The Pakistan Army retaliated to Indian strikes by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 22 Indian civilians and eight defence personnel were killed in the shelling. The sides on May 10 reached an 'understanding' to halt firing following the four-day conflict. The complainant alleged that the posts 'dampen the Indian Army's enthusiasm, sow doubt about their duty and diminish' public trust. It further alleged: 'Despite clear knowledge that the government has not surrendered and that these claims were false, the accused knowingly spread rumours that incite hatred, tarnish India's image internationally, and lower the Army's morale.' Congress criticises arrest The Congress criticised the arrest of Soni. Shaktisinh Gohil, the Gujarat Congress chief, said that Soni's had not made any comments against the military or the country. Soni had only remarked that 'our brave Army men should get the credit for the bravery they have shown and the money from the government treasury should not be used for publicity, and political mileage should not be taken' in the name of Operation Sindoor, Gohil said on social media. 'Seeing the way the government is doing publicity, they [citizens] have expressed concern that the soldiers will not get the credit,' Gohil said. 'If they only raise their voice for the Army or express their concern that they will not get the credit, how can it be a crime?'
