Sufjan Stevens sparks furious uproar with 'blasphemous' comments about the Bible being 'very gay'

Daily Mail15-05-2025
Sufjan Stevens has sparked furious uproar with his 'blasphemous' comments about the Bible - with some fans now threatening to boycott the singer.
The musician, 49, detailed how the religious text is inherently sexual before also branding it as 'very gay.'
'The religious is very sexual,' he detailed in a new interview with Vulture.
'It's erotic. Look at Catholic art through the ages, Baroque art. It's all very fleshy and sensual and full of naked bodies.'
The singer publicly came out in October 2023 when he dedicated his album, Javelin, to his 'beloved partner and best friend, Evans Richardson.'
He also revealed Richardson had died that April.
Sufjan - who identifies as a Christian - said that he has 'always embraced' the sexuality of religion in his work.
'I've always felt that my relationship to God is a very intimate and sensual one,' he explained.
'Sacraments are. It's engaging with God in a physical way. You're literally eating the flesh and drinking the blood of God during the Eucharist.
'It doesn't get much more erotic than that. If you're a vampire, that's the ultimate erotic experience.'
The Visions of Gideon singer added: 'The Bible's very gay. Just all men.
'That's what you get when there's a patriarchy that's endured for so long. Jesus was single, never married. Disciples were all dudes...'
But many fans of his music were not happy with Sufjan's take on the Bible.
'Sad to see my favorite artist say something with this level of disrespect towards the Holy Book. Shameful and bittersweet,' someone wrote.
'Sufjan, baby, I love you, but you're doing too much,' another wrote.
'Oh, RIP whatever little career this guy had,' a user wrote.
'Uncalled for,' a person wrote, while another said, 'Blasphemous.'
'Really like his music, but this is so boring and very unnecessary. Nobody wants to know Sufjan Stevens' point of view about Jesus' life, we already have the Bible,' one former fan detailed.
Another shared: 'You are a fool.'
'I liked him before that information. He sounds dumb as f**k now,' a comment read.

Mariah Carey reveals what she really thinks about the Grammys after being snubbed for years

has blasted the Grammys after being snubbed out of nominations for years. The 56-year-old singer has won only five Grammy Awards during the course of her successful career thus far - with her last nomination occurring 16 years earlier. The Always Be My Baby hitmaker appeared on Pitchfork's Over/Under YouTube series where celebrities weigh in on pop culture symbols including Labubus, Crocs, and Christmas. When the topic of the biggest award show in music came up, Mariah pulled no punches as she said: 'Ha, I think the Grammys are overrated.' Mariah went on to clarify that she meant that both the award show and the award itself were overrated. She didn't fully turn into her bitterness as she added: 'But we love everybody.' Last October, the Fantasy songstress opened up about the topic during the latest episode of the Las Culturistas podcast. At one point, hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers expressed that she doesn't 'have enough' Grammy wins, per Entertainment Weekly. Carey agreed and said in response, 'They scaaaaammed me. They toy with me.' Mariah has garnered a whopping 34 Grammy nominations - with her first win taking place in 1991 for Best New Artist and Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for Vision Of Love. In 2006, her album Emancipation Of Mimi won the Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album. The same year, she also won Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for the track, We Belong Together. Her last Grammy nomination was in 2009 for Best Gospel Performance for the song titled, I Understood, which also featured Kim Burrell, Rance Allen and Bebe Winans. Mariah has sold around 220 million records across the globe, and notably landed the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart 19 times as a solo artist. She has garnered a list of other accolades over the years, such as winning 10 American Music Awards and 20 Billboard Music Awards. Aside from the Las Culturistas podcast, Carey has previously let her feelings be known about her few Grammy wins. In February 2024, the star was honored with the Recording Academy's Global Impact Award at the 2024 Black Music Collective event. Upon taking to the stage, she seemingly threw shade at the Grammys, according to The Hollywood Reporter. 'Is this a real Grammy? I haven't seen one in soooooo long,' Mariah humorously said to the crowd. 'It's weird. I don't know. We'll figure out what this is later.'

Livvy Dunne stuns fans as she strips completely naked for bathtub photoshoot inside the Rose Bowl

No shoes, no shirt, no clothes at all for Livvy Dunne, as the social-media sensation barred everything by stripping completely naked for a bubble bath photoshoot inside the Rose Bowl. Dunne's latest photo-op took place inside the white porcelain tub, situated at one of the end zone of one of the most iconic sports venues in America. The former LSU gymnast has bubbles covering a lot of her body, with her bare shoulders and face in plain view, with a yellow rubber ducky not too far away. Dunne is also seen wearing sparkly diamond earrings, not typical of someone trying to get clean in a tub. Not another human being can been seen in the stands or on the green turf behind her, as her two snaps in Pasadena, California were accompanied by an advertisement for Fanatics Sportsbook. 'It's not everyday you sit in a bubble bath on the 50yd line explaining sports betting,' Dunne said in the comments of her video. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fanatics Sportsbook (@fanaticssportsbook) Dunne's ad might be a fun nod to one of the weirdest requests she has received from a fan - sending them the water she bathed in. Dunne also mentions to 'burst your bubble' in the advertisement, with her unclothed body sure to attract attention. 'Let's go!!!' Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin said in the comments. Dunne also posted photos of actress Margot Robbie to her Instagram story, showing her scenes from the movie 'The Big Short' where the Oscar-nominated A-lister got into a bathtub. The fellow blonde may have served as an inspiration for Dunne's bubble-bath photoshoot. In recent weeks, Dunne has spent time in the Hamptons and on Lake Oconee in Georgia. For the second straight year, Dunne also accompanied boyfriend Paul Skenes to the MLB All-Star Game, watching the Pittsburgh Pirates star throw alongside the best in baseball.

Asian Persuasion review – indie New York romcom of divorcee meddling in his ex's dating life

It is unexpected to see vintage romcom values upheld in an indie movie populated almost exclusively by Filipino-Americans. Tony award-winning producer Jhett Tolentino at least has a good high-concept hook for his feature directorial debut: a beleaguered divorcee tries to get out of paying alimony to his ex-wife by making a fake dating profile to bag her a new partner. Sadly, this tonally shaky and borderline-sociopathic outing doesn't have the class or skill to be part of the much-needed renaissance for the genre. Asian Persuasion takes place on the great New York dating grounds beloved of many a romcom: feckless single dad Mickey (Dante Basco, who played the leader of the Lost Boys in Steven Spielberg's Hook) is struggling to elevate his Queens coffee shop, Da Fili Beans, to hipster notoriety. Ponying up payments to his fashion designer ex Avery (KC Concepcion) as they co-parent their daughter isn't helping. So during a night on the lash with his wingman Caspian (Kevin Kreider), they cook up a scheme to make her someone else's problem; preppy financial analyst Lee-Kwan (Paolo Montalban) is the man they target as their best hope. Tolentino's attempts to court the zeitgeist are often painful, including Caspian premiering his latest TikTok dance at the coffee shop, and self-conscious dialogue apparently drawn from below-the-line on Instagram ('Can I unsubscribe from that memory?'). This extends to a strain of crassness ('We're practically drowning in a tsunami of poon') that makes for a rough transition to true romance, when Mickey uses his insider knowledge to knock Lee-Kwan into shape, Cyrano-style, as the ultimate seducer. So it's not a shock when Asian Persuasion lacks the finesse required to pull off the U-turn when Mickey decides he wants Avery back. His ham-fisted sushi-bar sabotage scheme is completely unconvincing, leaving the already hard-pedalling actors looking daft. The cursory flashbacks to the couple's disintegrating marriage first time round don't add enough depth to make him seem much more than manipulative, or her more than an inexplicable dupe. Alternately gullible or status-obsessed, its female characters feel retrograde – even featuring a French character actually wearing a beret. The film doesn't exactly cover itself in glory, a shame considering Tolentino's evident zeal for promoting Asian representation. Asian Persuasion is on digital platforms from 25 August.
