Olympic gold medalist Hezly Rivera surges to the lead at the U.S. gymnastics championships
Rivera, the youngest member of the five-woman team that cruised to gold at the 2024 Olympics, bounced back from a bumpy performance at the U.S. Classic last month. The now 17-year-old posted the top score on balance beam (14.350) and the second-highest score on floor exercise (14.000) to lead a very young field taking their first tentative steps toward the world championships this fall and — well down the road — the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Joscelyn Roberson, an Olympic alternate last summer and a rising sophomore at Arkansas, is second at 55.400. Roberson, who trained alongside two-time Olympic champion Simone Biles, finished with a dazzling floor routine to move past four-time world championship medalist Leanne Wong at 55.100.
Rivera, Roberson and Wong will head into Sunday well ahead of the rest of a field whose average age is just under 18, a significant departure from the run-up to Paris, when Biles and a group of older athletes took center stage.

New Zealand crushes Zimbabwe by an innings and 359 runs in record test win
BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe (AP) — New Zealand recorded its biggest-ever test win when it crushed Zimbabwe by an innings and 359 runs in the second test to wrap up a lopsided series 2-0 on Saturday. Zimbabwe, trailing by 476 runs, was bowled out for 117 in an extended first session on Day 3 against a rampant four-pronged New Zealand pace attack. Debutant fast bowler Zakary Foulkes followed his four-wicket haul in the first innings with 5-37 in the second outing and narrowly missed out a 10-wicket haul in his memorable debut test. Fast bowlers Matt Henry (2-16), Jacob Duffy (2-28) and Matthew Fisher (1-22) were also among the wickets as Zimbabwe was dismissed in 28.1 overs for its lowest total in the series. No. 3 batter Nick Welch remained unbeaten on 47 off 71 balls and was one of only two Zimbabwe batters to reach double figures along with captain Craig Ervine, who made 17. New Zealand had earlier declared its first innings at the overnight monumental 601-3 with Rachin Ravindra (165 not out) and Henry Nicholls (150 not out) combining in a blazing 256-run fourth-wicket stand. New Zealand had won the first test by nine wickets, inside three days, at the same venue last week. The series was not part of the World Test Championship. ___ AP cricket:

Man City midfielder Rodri dealing with injury setback before new Premier League season
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City midfielder Rodri could be sidelined for the start of the Premier League season because of an injury sustained at the Club World Cup, manager Pep Guardiola said. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner sat out nearly all of last season after tearing his ACL, and Guardiola described the Spain international's latest setback as a 'big injury.' It is believed to be a groin problem this time and occurred during City's 4-3 loss to Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup on June 30. Rodri was a second-half substitute but left the game in extra time. 'Rodri's getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al-Hilal and for the last five or six weeks,' Guardiola said. 'He's training right now and in the last two or three days is better. Hopefully maybe the international break is when he will be really really fit.' City, which struggled without its midfield mainstay last season, opens its 2025-26 campaign at Wolves next Saturday. They also play Tottenham and Brighton before the September international break. Guardiola said there's a possibility that Rodri 'can play some minutes' before the break. Phil Foden doesn't make trip to Palermo Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. City plays a friendly match against Palermo in Sicily on Saturday. Phil Foden was among those not making the trip. 'Phil was doing really good but he had a problem with a knock on his ankle that's why as a precaution we did it,' Guardiola said. The midfielder will 'hopefully' be ready for the season opener, the manager said. ___ AP soccer:

Man United signs Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig as attacking revamp continues
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United signed Slovenia forward Benjamin Sesko on Saturday in an attempt to bounce back from its worst season in the Premier League era. United paid RB Leipzig a fee that could reach 85 million euros ($99 million) for Sesko, who signed a five-year contract. Sesko is the third forward United has signed this offseason after a lack of goals last term saw the 20-time English champion record its lowest finish in the modern era when placing 15th and just three places above the relegation zone. His arrival follows the signings of forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as coach Ruben Amorim has prioritized revamping his attack ahead of his first full season in charge. Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scored just 18 goals between them in all competitions last term as United fell to a club record 18 losses in the Premier League era and its lowest points total of 42. Only four teams scored fewer goals than United in the top flight last term – including the three relegated clubs. The 22-year-old Sesko has been compared to former Paris Saint-Germain and United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic because of his height — both are 1.95 meters (6 feet, 5 inches) tall — and flashes of technical skill. He has proved he is capable of scoring spectacular goals, but his statistics for Leipzig have been modest after two years in Germany. He scored 14 goals in his first season with the club and followed that with 13 last term. He has six goals in 28 Champions League games for Leipzig and his previous club Salzburg, and 16 in 41 games for Slovenia. 'The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future,' Sesko said in the team's announcement. 'When we discussed the project,' he added, 'it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.' The move for Sesko comes after United's reported interest in Liam Delap, Viktor Gyokeres and Ollie Watkins. While he is unproven in England, in Cunha and Mbeumo United has signed forwards who are tried and tested in the Premier League. Mbeumo scored 20 league goals for Brentford last season, with only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland netting more. Cunha scored 17 in all competitions and helped Wolves avoid relegation last term. ___ James Ellingworth in Dusseldorf contributed. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:
