Sailing away from the 9-to-5: man and his cat embrace life on the open seas
Oliver Widger after sailing and conquering the Pacific Ocean.

In an age where the allure of corporate stability often overshadows the call of adventure, Oliver Widger has thrown caution to the wind, leaving behind an 11-year-long career at a tyre shop to embark on a daring sailing expedition around the world.
Captured beautifully on Instagram (@sailing\_with\_phoenix), his journey recently transformed from a dream to reality when he sailed from Oregon to Hawaii – a testament to chasing dreams and defying conventional norms.
Widger's decision to pursue sailing comes in the wake of a life-altering diagnosis.
Three years ago, he was diagnosed with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS), a rare spinal disorder that leaves him with a loose spine and the potential risk of paralysis.
'That reality kind of shook up my world,' he reflected.
This confrontation with his mortality ignited in him an intense desire for change, pushing him to abandon the corporate grind he had grown to despise. 'I became incredibly aware of my mortality,' he admitted candidly.
In 2024, the seeds of change were sown as he quit his job 'rather abruptly, intending to sail around the world with no plan.'
Without prior sailing experience, he purchased a sailboat and charted his course into the unknown. Widger's first monumental voyage, the month-long trek across the vast Pacific Ocean, culminated in a triumphant arrival in Hawaii.

'Dear Corporate America, I won,' he proclaimed, a phrase that captures not only his victory over his former life but also the sheer exhilaration of freedom.
Widger's journey embodies the spirit of adventure and the quest for self-discovery.
'I chased a dream bigger than my fear,' he recounted, his voice imbued with pride.
'I worked until my hands bled, fought storms inside and out, and chose a life few would dare to live. I've already won because I found the courage to try.'
His words resonate with anyone who has ever contemplated stepping outside the confines of their comfort zone in pursuit of a deeper, more meaningful existence.
With the seas of Hawaii now behind him, the sailor and his trusty feline companion, Phoenix, are set to continue their odyssey.
He plans to spend the next 30 days snorkelling.
As he dreams of French Polynesia looming on their horizon, one thing remains clear: Widger is not just living a dream; he is redefining what it means to truly live.

Luxury travel buddy: Who is Paul Mashatile's wife?
Paul Mashatile has been condemned by parliament for spending millions on luxury travel alongside his wife, Humile. The deputy president and the Second Lady – who have a 24-year age gap – wed in 2023 after both their partners died in 2020. Over the past few days, Deputy President Paul Mashatile has been grilled over his five-star luxury travel he made with his wife Humile on unofficial trips, at the expense of the taxpayer. In a recent parliament sitting, it was revealed that Paul spent over R2 million on a six-night stay in London last year. Earlier this year, he travelled to Japan, where he splurged almost R1 million on a four-night stay with his wife. Since being sworn in last July, Paul has spent almost R8 million on four international trips. Paul Mashatile's younger, attractive wife is no stranger to the spotlight. Humile was first married to former ANC Western Cape secretary Songezo Mjongile, who died in 2020 after a battle with colon cancer. At the time, Paul was the treasurer of the ANC. Paul's first wife, Manzi Ellen Mashatile, died in July 2020 after contracting COVID-19. Paul has four children with his late wife, while Humile has two from her marriage to Songezo. The couple's nuptials occurred just days after Paul was sworn in as SA's new deputy president. Paul Mashatile and his wife Humile Mjongile. Kerishnie Naiker recalls freak accident that left her in a wheelchair
Former Miss SA Kerishnie Naiker has reflected on the first anniversary since a freak accident that left her temporarily wheelchair bound after dislocating both ankles. The 51-year-old beauty queen suffered a serious fall after bumping into a tourist at Cape Point in May last year. After undergoing intensive rehabilitation, she slowly regained mobility, but with limitations. In 1997, Kerishnie became the first South African of Indian descent to win Miss SA. In an Instagram post over the weekend, Kerishnie Naiker reflected on a year of intense rehabilitation since her horror accident at a Cape tourist destination last year. Sharing footage of her time in hospital, she shared: 'Adaptability is an art and an advantage. The focus has not once been on the negligent, selfie-addicted tourist, but rather on being solution-driven and healing. Earlier this month, Kerishnie claimed she had '28% sports ability' and also revealed she experienced nerve damage in her toes. According to Kerishnie Naiker, she suffered a serious fall last year after bumping into a tourist on a steep flight of stairs. She shared: 'I was accidentally tripped by a tourist while she was taking photographs. While on the stairs from the lighthouse at Cape Point, she walked backward into me, tripping me down two steps. She tried to get the lighthouse in focus and took one step too far'. The beauty queen dislocated both her ankles and had to undergo an intensive rehabilitation programme. Kerishnie Naiker has shared a health update after a freak accident. Images via Instagram: @kerishnie_naiker In light of the accident, Kerishnie Naiker has used her platform to share the lessons she learned from the experience. She shared: 'I feel it imperative to use this platform to reaffirm that we: 'Do not take photos at the peril of others or ourselves 'Are observant, cognizant of our surroundings, and situationally aware 'Savour every moment and take it all in without having to witness it all through a lens 'Are mindful, kind, and not oblivious of the well-being of others.' She added, 'Too many are dying while taking selfies and recording reels, and others are getting injured and killed by their negligence.' 'Gregolimano provided the canvas, while fun, good energy, and pure enjoyment were the primary colours of the time. 🤔 I think I was born in the wrong decade because this look from the 70s has me in a chokehold…⏳…' His retro fashion statements speak to a personality unafraid of self-expression, wrapped in the joy of nostalgia. Maboe's getaway comes on the heels of his much-anticipated return to The Expresso Morning Show in August 2022, following a two-year hiatus focused on resolving personal matters. After a strenuous legal battle, he was finally absolved of allegations of abuse in January 2022, paving the way for a fresh start.
