Ukraine will not pull its forces out of Donbas, Zelenskiy says

Reuters2 days ago
KYIV, Aug 12 (Reuters) - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday he would reject any Russian proposal to pull Ukrainian troops out of the eastern Donbas region as it would deprive Kyiv of defensive lines and open the way for Moscow to conduct further offensives.
The Ukrainian leader told reporters that territorial issues should be discussed after Russia agrees to a ceasefire, and security guarantees for Ukraine should be an integral part of that discussion.
Speaking ahead of a summit on Friday between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Zelenskiy also reiterated that Ukraine must be involved in any talks concerning its own territory. Trump has suggested an exchange of territory might be part of any putative peace deal.
Zelenskiy said Russia's proposal was to halt its advances in other Ukrainian regions in exchange for Kyiv pulling back its forces from the Donbas in eastern Ukraine, which comprises the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Zelenskiy said Ukraine still controlled about 30% of the Donetsk region, or about 9,000 square kilometers, and had heavily fortified defensive lines and controlled strategic high ground there.
Any pullout would create a launch pad for new Russian offensives, he said.
"Putin will have an open way to both Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro regions. Also for Kharkiv," Zelenskiy said. "The territorial issue cannot be separated from security guarantees."

India wants US ties based on mutual respect, says its arms purchases are on course

NEW DELHI, Aug 14 (Reuters) - India said on Thursday that it hoped relations with the United States would move forward based on mutual respect and shared interests, seeking to temper worries that ties were headed downhill in the aftermath of high tariffs imposed by Washington. A U.S. defence policy team will be in New Delhi this month for talks with Indian officials and its arms purchases from the U.S. are on course despite the strain in ties, the Indian foreign ministry said. A new friendship built between the two countries has hit a rough patch after President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50% last week from an earlier 25% saying it was a penalty for India's continued imports of Russian oil. New Delhi has accused the U.S. of double standards in singling it out for Russian oil imports and called the tariffs unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. At the same time, it has also indicated that the warming of ties that began at the turn of the century covers a wide range of areas and should not be seen only through the prism of trade, although it hopes that trade talks will continue and result in a deal. "This partnership has weathered several transitions and we hope that the relationship will continue to move forward based on mutual respect and shared interests," Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a regular media briefing. Purchases of military equipment from Washington were on course, Jaiswal said, adding that a U.S. defence policy team was expected in Delhi this month. Reuters reported last week that India has put on hold its plans to procure new U.S. weapons and aircraft and that a planned trip to Washington by the Indian defence minister had been cancelled. The Indian government subsequently said reports of a pause in the talks were wrong.

Hunter Biden refuses to apologize to Melania Trump

Former president Joe Biden's son Hunter reacted strongly to a legal threat from First Lady Melania Trump, publishing a expletive-laden video on YouTube in response to her demand for an apology and retraction. Hunter made the false claim that Melania Trump was introduced to President Donald Trump by convicted sexual offender and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, citing a Daily Beast report sourced to author Michael Wolff. The Daily Beast report was retracted with an apology, but Hunter still repeated the claim in an interview with the Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan podcast. 'They knew each other well, they spent an enormous amount of time together,' the former president's son said of Donald Trump and Epstein. 'According to his biographer, Jeffrey Epstein introduced Melania , that's how Melania .. the first lady and the president met.' Mrs. Trump 's lawyer threatened to sue Hunter Biden for $1 billion unless they 'immediately retract the false, defamatory, disparaging and inflammatory statements made about Mrs. Trump.' But Hunter Biden was not interested in an apology, sharing his public reaction on Callaghans show. '[expletive] that. That's not going to happen,' Biden replied, after Callaghan showed him a copy of the letter. Hunter Biden defended his comments, citing reporting from Wolff's book, and a 2019 story from the New York Times that reported Epstein was 'claiming to people that he was the one who introduced Mr. Trump to his third wife, Melania Trump.' In a letter addressed to Biden and his longtime lawyer Abbe Lowell, the first lady's lawyer Alejandro Brito called Biden's comments 'false, defamatory, and lewd.' 'Given your vast history of trading on the names of others-including your surname-for your personal benefit, it is obvious that you published these false and defamatory statements about Mrs. Trump to draw attention to yourself,' Brito wrote in a letter, first obtained by Fox News Digital. The letter was dated August 6 and gave the younger Biden until August 7 to comply. Biden defied the lawsuit threat and vowed to take the Trumps to court, even as he estimated the lawsuit would probably cost 'millions' of dollars. 'If they want to go through the process, then they know it's going to cost them an enormous amount of money to do it,' Biden said. 'We gotta figure out how we're going to pay for it.' The specific episode of Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan in question remains on YouTube with 1.3 million views. 'These false, disparaging, defamatory, and inflammatory statements are extremely salacious and have been widely disseminated throughout various digital mediums,' the first lady's attorney said. 'Indeed, the Video has since been re-published by various media outlets, journalists, and political commentators with millions of social media followers that have disseminated the false and defamatory statements therein to tens of millions of people worldwide,' he continued. 'Consequently, you have caused Mrs. Trump to suffer overwhelming financial and reputational harm,' Brito added. The lawyer asked Biden to 'immediately issue a full and fair retraction of the video.' The former first son must also 'immediately issue an apology for the false, defamatory, disparaging, misleading, and inflammatory statements about Mrs. Trump,' Brito said.

Vance plays golf on Trump's Turnberry course during holiday in Scotland

US Vice-President JD Vance has been playing golf at one of Donald Trump's golf courses on the first morning of his holiday in Scotland. Mr Vance landed at Prestwick Airport in South Ayrshire on Wednesday evening before travelling to the luxury Carnell Estate near Kilmarnock. On Thursday morning he was at the Trump Turnberry resort on the Ayrshire coast and spent time playing on the golf course. It comes after the US president's own visit to Scotland last month, when he split his stay between Turnberry and his golf resort in Aberdeenshire. Mr Vance was greeted by dozens of pro-Palestine protesters when he arrived at the Carnell Estate on Wednesday. The demonstrators waved Palestine flags and shouted pro-Palestine chants. Airspace restrictions are in place around the estate until Sunday. Mr Vance will reportedly spend five days in Scotland – the same amount of time his boss Mr Trump did during his trip to the country last month. Police Scotland previously said they have plans in place for a 'significant police operation' during Mr Vance's time in Scotland. Mr Vance had been holidaying in the Cotswolds but travelled to Foreign Secretary David Lammy's Chevening House retreat in Kent on Friday and joined him for some carp fishing. On Wednesday, Mr Vance described the UK-US relationship as 'a beautiful alliance' during a speech at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
