Ukraine will not pull its forces out of Donbas, Zelenskiy says
The Ukrainian leader told reporters that territorial issues should be discussed after Russia agrees to a ceasefire, and security guarantees for Ukraine should be an integral part of that discussion.
Speaking ahead of a summit on Friday between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Zelenskiy also reiterated that Ukraine must be involved in any talks concerning its own territory. Trump has suggested an exchange of territory might be part of any putative peace deal.
Zelenskiy said Russia's proposal was to halt its advances in other Ukrainian regions in exchange for Kyiv pulling back its forces from the Donbas in eastern Ukraine, which comprises the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Zelenskiy said Ukraine still controlled about 30% of the Donetsk region, or about 9,000 square kilometers, and had heavily fortified defensive lines and controlled strategic high ground there.
Any pullout would create a launch pad for new Russian offensives, he said.
"Putin will have an open way to both Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro regions. Also for Kharkiv," Zelenskiy said. "The territorial issue cannot be separated from security guarantees."

Reuters reported last week that India has put on hold its plans to procure new U.S. weapons and aircraft and that a planned trip to Washington by the Indian defence minister had been cancelled. Former president Joe Biden's son Hunter reacted strongly to a legal threat from First Lady Melania Trump, publishing a expletive-laden video on YouTube in response to her demand for an apology and retraction. The letter was dated August 6 and gave the younger Biden until August 7 to comply. Biden defied the lawsuit threat and vowed to take the Trumps to court, even as he estimated the lawsuit would probably cost 'millions' of dollars. 'If they want to go through the process, then they know it's going to cost them an enormous amount of money to do it,' Biden said. 'We gotta figure out how we're going to pay for it.' The specific episode of Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan in question remains on YouTube with 1.3 million views. 'These false, disparaging, defamatory, and inflammatory statements are extremely salacious and have been widely disseminated throughout various digital mediums,' the first lady's attorney said. Vance plays golf on Trump's Turnberry course during holiday in Scotland
US Vice-President JD Vance has been playing golf at one of Donald Trump's golf courses on the first morning of his holiday in Scotland. Mr Vance landed at Prestwick Airport in South Ayrshire on Wednesday evening before travelling to the luxury Carnell Estate near Kilmarnock. On Thursday morning he was at the Trump Turnberry resort on the Ayrshire coast and spent time playing on the golf course. It comes after the US president's own visit to Scotland last month, when he split his stay between Turnberry and his golf resort in Aberdeenshire. Mr Vance was greeted by dozens of pro-Palestine protesters when he arrived at the Carnell Estate on Wednesday. The demonstrators waved Palestine flags and shouted pro-Palestine chants. Airspace restrictions are in place around the estate until Sunday. Mr Vance will reportedly spend five days in Scotland – the same amount of time his boss Mr Trump did during his trip to the country last month. Police Scotland previously said they have plans in place for a 'significant police operation' during Mr Vance's time in Scotland. Mr Vance had been holidaying in the Cotswolds but travelled to Foreign Secretary David Lammy's Chevening House retreat in Kent on Friday and joined him for some carp fishing. On Wednesday, Mr Vance described the UK-US relationship as 'a beautiful alliance' during a speech at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
