Mira Nair's Son Making Waves In NYC Politics

Buzz Feed2 days ago

Zohran Mamdani isn't your typical mayoral candidate. For starters, he's the son of a legendary filmmaker. But instead of walking red carpets, he's knocking on doors in Queens, fighting housing battles, and launching a mayoral campaign that feels like a Gen Z fever dream.
With bold, subversive ideas, TikTok tactics, and small-dollar donor energy, Mamdani is shaking up NYC politics as the city gears up for its mayoral election in November 2025. And yes, he's even going head-to-head with big names like Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor who resigned in 2021 amid controversy but remains a heavyweight in the state's political scene.
Here are a few things to know about NYC's millennial maverick:
He's the son of a critically acclaimed director and a Ugandan academic—born in Kampala, raised in NYC, now eyeing City Hall.
His mom is the iconic Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, anyone?) and his dad is Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani. Talk about a power parent combo. Born in Kampala on October 18, 1991, Zohran spent early childhood in Uganda and South Africa before moving to NYC at age 7.
NYC-raised, Bowdoin-educated, and already organizing in college—Zohran didn't wait to get political.
Zohran grew up in Morningside Heights, crushed it at Bronx Science, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 2014 with a degree in Africana Studies. Oh, and he didn't just chill, he co-founded the 'Students for Justice in Palestine' chapter there.
His middle name, Kwame, was chosen to honour Ghana's former President.
Zohran's dad gave him the name 'Kwame' after Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first Prime Minister and then President. It is not just a name, but a whole political vibe.
Zohran helped stop evictions and secured major debt relief for NYC taxi drivers.
Zohran started out fighting evictions, then set his sights on NYC's broken taxi medallion system, where drivers had to shell out huge amounts just to drive a cab. When the bubble burst, they were drowning in debt. Zohran helped get $450 million of it wiped clean.
He was the first South Asian elected to NY Assembly.
In 2020, he made history as the first South Asian guy ever elected to the New York State Assembly, and he's been repping Astoria (aka District 36) since January 2021.
He moonlighted as rapper Mr. Cardamom.
His campaign vibes are straight out of Bollywood with iconic Deewar and SRK moments. And yes, he's speaking in Hindi.
Zohran's plan? Free buses, rent freezes, and going after rich universities.
Small donors powered him to $8 million before he stopped fundraising.
He also took a chilly plunge into the freezing Coney Island waters to protest rent hikes. Yes, there's a video. Yes, it has 800k+ views.
AOC's all in on team Zohran.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is backing Zohran, calling out his skill at bringing working-class communities together.
Love him or not—or maybe you're just here for that viral icy plunge video—Zohran Mamdani is switching up NYC mayor race vibes.
The big moment lands on June 24, when voters hit the polls for the Democratic primary that could change everything, meaning things are about to get interesting.

Top NYC mayoral candidates Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani spar over experience

The two top contenders in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor engaged in heated exchange Wednesday over who is most qualified to run the city and deal with President Trump. With less than two weeks until the election, Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani are trying to take their best shots and exploit each other's weaknesses by slugging it out over experience. Early voting in the mayoral primary starts Saturday. Read more: Michael Bloomberg endorses Andrew Cuomo in NYC mayor's race Cuomo mocks what he calls Mamdani's inexperience After picking up the endorsements of former New York Gov. David Paterson and Keith Wright, the chairman of the Manhattan Democratic Party, on Wednesday, Cuomo, the 67-year-old former attorney general and governor of New York zeroed in on Assemblyman Mamdani, 33, who has held elected office for four years. "Every job requires some experience. Mayor of the city of New York is a difficult job. It requires someone who knows what they're doing," Cuomo said. In typical Cuomo style, he mocked what a Mamdani job interview for mayor would sound like. "OK, do you have management experience? No. Have you managed 100 people before? No. Have you managed 50 people before? No. You have experience dealing with Washington? Because we have this fellow named Trump who's a problem? No, I have no experience dealing with Washington," Cuomo said. It was Cuomo's way of highlighting his belief that it takes a different skill set to deal with the problems of 8.2 million New Yorkers and 300,000 city workers, compared to the five staffers and an interns Mamdani employs to deal with the problems of his 130,000 constituents. Mamdani strikes back Mamdani, who began airing a new campaign ad on Wednesday on cheaper groceries, raising the minimum wage, and freezing rent, was having none of it. "I think this is a moment when New Yorkers have to ask themselves, what kind of experience do they want? If they want the experience of a former governor whose campaign is being funded by Trump's billionaire donors, if they want the experience of someone who cut Medicaid, who stole hundreds of millions of dollars from the MTA, then their candidate should be Andrew Cuomo," Mamdani said. CBS News New York's Marcia Kramer pointed out to Mamdani that Cuomo said the young assemblyman won't be able to deal with Trump. "I've already dealt with a big, bad bully, and his name is Andrew Cuomo. He's a threat to New York City, and, ultimately, when he was the governor and I came into Albany as an assembly member, he didn't want to tax his donors, billionaires and corporations to fully fund the schools. We overcame his objections, raised $4 billion in new taxes," Mamdani said. There were other developments in the mayor's race on Wednesday. City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams asked the Department of Investigation to probe current Mayor Eric Adams' collaboration with federal authorities, and a transit advocacy group, StreetsPAC, endorsed City Comptroller Brad Lander.

Gen Z MAGA Influencer Claims He Got ICE to Detain TikTok Star Khaby Lame

Bo Loudon, a Trump-supporting Gen Z influencer, has taken credit for TikTok star Khaby Lame's detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE on June 6. That day, Loudon, 18, who has called Donald Trump's son Barron his 'best friend,' began a series of posts on X claiming he initiated Lame's detainment. 'I discovered he was an illegal who overstayed an invalid VISA, evaded taxes, and I personally took action to have him deported,' Loudon alleged. Later, he added, 'I've been working with the patriots at President Trump's DHS to make this happen.' In a video posted on Monday, while making more unsubstantiated claims about Lame, Loudon said, 'I just called some buddies in the administration, and I've never seen anything happen so quick. They were like, 'We're gonna get right on this.'' More from Rolling Stone Masked ICE Agents Detain 9-Month-Pregnant U.S. Citizen in L.A. Crackdown Noem Asked for Troops to Be Authorized to Arrest 'Lawbreakers': Report Most-Followed TikToker Khaby Lame Detained, Released by ICE Over Visa Issue Lame, 25, is the most-followed TikToker in the world, known for his silently comedic videos skewering social media trends. Though Loudon alleged Lame is 'far-left,' Lame is not known for any political activity. The star was detained at Harry Reid International Airport, in Las Vegas, Nevada 'for immigration violations,' according to an ICE spokesperson's statement. 'Lame entered the United States [on] April 30 and overstayed the terms of his visa,' the spokesperson said. ICE has also said Lame was granted voluntary departure the day he was detained and has since left the U.S. On June 9, the influencer shared a photo of himself in São Paulo, Brazil. He has not publicly addressed his detainment. A rep for Lame declined to comment on the detainment, and did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone's request for comment on Loudon's claims. Born Seringe Khabane Lame in Sengal, Lame is an Italian citizen and has been a resident of the country since he was one, according to NPR. Lame attended the Met Gala in New York City on May 5, alongside some of the world's most high-profile entertainers. A rep for ICE told Rolling Stone 'We have no further information to provide,' when asked to expand on Loudon's alleged involvement in Lame's detainment as well as the nature and duration of Lame's visa. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately return our request for comment. Loudon has frequently posited himself a playmaker in the President's world, calling himself, 'Trump's young gun.' He was on site for Trump's mid-campaign interview with controversial streamer Adin Ross in 2024, with his mother, conservative media personality, Gina Loudon, later calling the linkup her son's 'brainchild.' His father is former Missouri state senator John Loudon. June 11, 2:55 p.m.: This story has been updated to include ICE's comment. It's Your Call for June 11

Make it fair Instead of the city raising our sewer bills and having our local people who live here and who are taxed enough, why not have an earnings tax for all the people who come to St. Joseph, use our streets, use our sewer, and then take their paycheck back to their home cities and spend their money? Let's have an earnings tax. Make it fair. Sewer rates going up I see where the city is going to raise sewer rates again. I guess they didn't see this coming 40 years ago. With the intelligence and the brightness that we have that run the city of St. Joe, we should have seen this way beforehand, but apparently there's nobody competent enough at City Hall to understand the logic. And as far as being mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency and all that, I'd like to see that in writing before I believe what the city tells me. Answer the question I seen on TV this morning that the school board is going to go ahead with the two high schools. Didn't we vote this down two times? What is the school board doing? Why did we vote it down and why are they just going ahead and doing it anyway? If someone can answer this one in It's Your Call, it'd be great because I don't understand if you've been voted down twice why you have the permission to go ahead anyway. If somebody from the school board could answer the question, it would be great. Prime property This is for all the Democrats that are calling in saying the riots in L.A. are Trump's fault and that they are peaceful protests. Please call me if you really believe that because I have some prime resort property at Lake Contrary to sell you. Shame on them I can't believe the audacity this president has, what he's done in California. That hadn't been done since '65, and it was legitimate then. This is uncalled for, and every representative and every senator all ought to be ashamed of themselves for not voting to stop for this guy.
