Major Hollyoaks exit confirmed as popular star quits after 2 years

Metro7 hours ago

After two years as the tough no-nonsense matriarch Marie Fielding, Rita Simons has quit Hollyoaks.
The former EastEnders star confirmed the news on her social media channels, writing on Instagram that she's going to be 'saying bye bye' to her Channel 4 soap counterpart in the autumn.
No, you're crying.
'Since Marie Fielding stepped into Hollyoaks village, she's sufficiently messed up all her boys lives, Caused ALL the carnage and fallen off the wagon a few times…so her job here is done!,' she said, alongside a few snaps from her time on the show.
'On a personal note, when I first came to Liverpool I was still figuring out how find balance in my mind and body after a total hystorectomy (which was the best journey I ever went on in the end!).
'This beautiful, welcoming city has healed me more than I can ever explain. I will always have such love for my second home and the wonderful people of Liverpool.
'But now I feel strong, I can metaphorically walk on my own again, and I need to do just that. So It's time to thank everyone at Hollyoaks for being the best tonic I could've asked for. But London and my true home is calling and I have to follow my heart. Gone are the days of not listening to my soul. So…Londons calling baby!'
Rita, 48, confirmed that – prior to her departure – there is more to come for Marie, promising audiences a 'bit more carnage'.
The actress' social media post comes after The Sun reported on news of her exit, with a source telling the publication that the 'door is always open' in terms of a possible comeback later down the line. https://www.instagram.com/p/DLSw4OutXDj/?img_index=1
Metro has reached out to Hollyoaks for comment.
Following Rita's casting in 2023, Marie made an explosive Hollyoaks debut in March 2024, clashing with Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) during her introductory scenes.
Marie is the mum of Joel Dexter (Rory Douglas-Speed), whose exit after 9 years was confirmed earlier this month.
Her son Abe (Tyler Conti), who abused Cleo McQueen (Nadine Mulkerrin), met a shocking end earlier this year at the hands of Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield) while third son Arlo (Dan Hough) bullied Ro Hutchinson (Ava Webster).
Following a time jump one year into the future, Marie enjoyed a short-lived relationship with Tony (Nick Pickard), who has started to fall for ex-wife Diane (Alex Fletcher).
Marie has proven a breath of fresh air during her time in the village, particularly during those early months when she settled into the matriarchal role at the Lomax household, proving a huge source of support and guidance for Joel and Leela Dexter (Kirsty Leigh-Porter) during their heartbreaking stillbirth story. Rita Simons' reputation as a phenomenal actress proceeds her due to her unforgettable stint as Roxy Mitchell in EastEnders and Marie's trials and tribulations allowed her ample opportunities to showcase such skills on the Channel 4 soap, with storylines ranging from addiction to the character's ardent belief in her kids, which – in a show that can often be brilliantly larger than life – made her so inherently real and believable.
She'll certainly be missed.

EastEnders star wishes she was like Kathy amid unbreakable bond with co-star

Kathy Beale actor Gillian Taylforth has opened up about her long-running EastEnders character and her time on the BBC soap opera as the show celebrates its 40th anniversary year Long-running EastEnders star Gillian Taylforth says she wishes she was more feisty and fearless like her iconic soap character Kathy Beale. The actress has been a part of the BBC show since its first episode, firmly establishing herself as fans favourite thanks to her character's no nonsense attitude. Whilst she says some things - like her voice - are indistinguishable, Gillian, 69, says there are others that are quite different. "Sometimes I wish I was a bit more like Kathy – she has a lot of opinions, and I'm one of those people who sits on the fence," admits Gillian. "I'm not that strong-minded, but she is and I love that. ‌ "She's got a great sense of humour, too – that's something we share. When I'm out and about, people shout 'Kathy!' at me. And if people don't recognise me to start with, as soon as I talk, they know it's me – it's the deep voice!" ‌ As the show celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, so does Gillian, as one of the few stars to have survived four decades. She returned to the show in 2015 after being presumed dead since 2006, making a surprise appearance in a live episode celebrating the show's 30th anniversary. She came back full time and reunited with her on-screen son Ian Beale, played by Adam Woodyatt, 56. Opening up on their tearful reunion and unbreakable bond, Gillian says they are like mum and son off set as well as on. "I have amazing relationships with everyone at EastEnders, but there's something special with Adam," she said. "He's played my son for 40 years, and he never calls me by my name, it's always 'Mum', even when we're not on set, and he's 'Son' to me. "We've got a close bond – he can see if I've forgotten my lines, and he'll say them to remind me. The moment we reunited when Kathy came back, there were tears everywhere – it was a magical moment." A much-loved fan favourite, her co-stars also love Gillian, who says she's the life and soul of the party on set. "My nickname at work is Jukebox Gilly as I'm always bursting into song!" she told. ‌ During her 10 year break from EastEnders, mum-of-two Gillian explored other telly projects, appearing on Celebrity Big Brother, Footballers' Wives and Hollyoaks. But she says none compared to Albert Square. "EastEnders has always been my favourite place to work," she beamed. "I loved The Bill, Footballers' Wives and Hollyoaks. I got to do plays and a musical and other things that were lovely. But EastEnders has always been in my heart, because that's where I feel I became who I am. ‌ "This wonderful character, Kathy, was always a big part of me. So when I was invited back for the 30th anniversary, I was overjoyed to have Kathy back in my life." Gillian has been a part of some of EastEnders' most high-profile storylines. Kathy was the victim of rape in 1988 episodes and Gillian recalled how it had a huge impact on her. "One storyline that really stuck with me was Kathy's rape in 1988. [Kathy was raped by bar owner James Willmott-Brown, played by William Boyde.] "That was really dark. I went home every night to sort through the material and figure out exactly how I'd play each moment – and when you're reading it all the time, and rehearsing, you want to forget about it straight away because it's such an awful subject. ‌ "But it was a great honour to be trusted with that storyline, and I wanted to do it justice. So many girls wrote in to say it had happened to them, and I knew that the show was reaching a lot of people who needed it." Huge Hollyoaks star 'QUITS show after two years - and will film final scenes for explosive exit'

A huge Hollyoaks star has reportedly quit the show after just 18 months. Rita Simons, 48, best known for playing EastEnders iconic Roxy Mitchell, joined Hollyoaks in early 2024 as gangster Warren Fox's long-lost ex Marie Fielding. Since her arrival, she's been at the heart of some of the soap's most explosive plots, particularly those involving her villainous sons Abe (Tyler Conti) and Arlo (Dan Hough). Now, Rita has reportedly made the decision to leave the show, with a dramatic exit storyline set to air later this year. A source told The Sun: 'Rita has absolutely loved every second of her time at Hollyoaks and it wasn't an easy decision. 'She moved her entire life to Liverpool two years ago to throw herself into the show, and it's been a great adventure, but the pull of home is just too much. 'London has been calling her, and it's proved difficult to balance a job she loves and her life in London.' The insider added that Channel 4 bosses have been supportive of her decision and have crafted a powerful exit for her character. While Rita is sad to go, she's said to be 'excited' to film the emotional scenes. Rita is expected to shoot her final episodes this summer, with her character's departure airing in the autumn. MailOnline has contacted Channel 4 and Rita's representative for comment. Meanwhile, Hollyoaks is gearing up to mark its 30th anniversary this October with a huge month of celebrations. Show boss Hannah Cheers teased that a signature Hollyoaks stunt is already in the works as she claimed you can't do a Hollyoaks commemoration 'without some kind of spectacle'. She also revealed a huge battle between two Hollyoaks titans will take centre stage for October. Having recently returned from the dead to the village after 12 years, Clare Devine is back, and she's set to clash against serial killer Jez Blake in the run-up to the big anniversary. Rita made a striking entrance into Hollyoaks in early 2024 as Marie Fielding, the turbulent mother of Joel Dexter. Her debut came during a dramatic fight at a gender reveal party, where she crashed into the McQueen family's world by stealing Mercedes' dress and stirring up longstanding tensions. From the outset, her character was announced as a catalyst for chaos - promising trouble across multiple storylines and hinting at hidden motives rooted in her return from prison. Over her time on the show, Marie became embroiled in some of Hollyoaks' most explosive plots: secretive romances (including a complicated connection with Tony Hutchinson), family reckonings, and a dramatic motorcycle crash storyline.
