Ambedkar University Delhi sees diverging narratives on class boycott

Hindustan Times21-04-2025
New Delhi, A campus-wide class boycott at Ambedkar University Delhi's Kashmere Gate campus on Monday has triggered conflicting claims from the Students' Council and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, with both student bodies presenting contrasting pictures of the day's developments.
There was no response available from the varsity over the issue.
In an official statement, the Ambedkar University Delhi Students' Council declared the boycott an "overwhelming success," stating that 20 out of 27 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes observed a total shutdown of lectures.
"With a sense of pride, we declare the campus-strike as an overwhelming success," the statement said, adding that research scholars from 16 programmes had also extended support.
The strike, AUDSC said, was backed by resolutions passed through General Body Meetings held across schools and programmes last week.
These meetings also condemned what the council described as the "high-handed attitude" of the university administration, citing student suspensions, closure of the main gate and administrative actions against faculty.
As part of the protest, students marked a "Cultural Day of Solidarity" with collective singing, mural painting, and discussions on what they called the "deteriorating condition" of the university.
The council also criticised the administration for not holding a dialogue despite prior notice. "It is regrettable that a meeting did not take place to discuss the issues," the statement noted.
Countering the claims, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's AUD unit issued its own statement asserting that the boycott call was largely rejected by the student body.
"Academic activities continued smoothly with enthusiastic participation from students across all departments," it said.
ABVP AUD President Anubhav Pandey termed the strike "politically driven" and praised students for prioritising academics. "This is a resounding victory for student welfare, academic integrity and nationalism," he said.
The AUDSC had cited several concerns including the suspension of five students, alleged violence against student representatives, barricading on campus, restrictive curfew timings, closure of the main gate, a show-cause notice to associate professor Dr Kaustav Banerjee and the disabling of the student mail chain.

Telangana high court refuses to interfere with GHMC order on closure of beef shops

Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Thursday said it cannot interfere with the GHMC's orders directing the closure of beef shops and slaughterhouses on August 15 and 16 in view of Independence Day and Sri Krishna Janmashtami. The court also refused to grant a stay, noting that the petitioner was not engaged in beef sales. The GHMC commissioner issued the closure orders on August 4. Vadla Srikanth of Tarnaka challenged them in the high court, alleging a violation of fundamental rights. Justice B Vijaysen Reddy heard the matter. The petitioner's counsel argued that the GHMC lacked the authority to issue such directions, which allegedly violated Articles 14 and 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, and that closing only beef shops amounted to discrimination. Observing that the petitioner was a consumer and not a trader, the court suggested filing a Public Interest Litigation in such matters. The case was adjourned to August 28. Clash erupts after RSS student wing observes Partition Horrors Day in Kerala college

Clashes broke out at a government college in Kerala's Kasaragod on Thursday after the RSS-affiliated student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, following a directive from Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath activists put up posters about the day at the college, prompting Students Federation of India (SFI) members, backed by the CPI(M), to gather in large numbers and tear down the posters. The police intervened to prevent further clashes. The SFI also burned an effigy of the Governor outside the ABVP students reinstalled the posters on the college notice board, which led to protests by Muslim Students Federation (MSF) activists, affiliated with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Police formed a barrier between the groups as slogans were raised. ABVP said its members observed the day at Kerala Central University, the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) College at Kumbala, Kasaragod Government College, and Chendayad MG College in Kannur. At the Central University, the observance began at 12.30 am. ABVP plans to continue the commemoration at HRD College in Governor, acting as Chancellor of state universities, had issued a circular on instructions from the Union Home Ministry, directing vice chancellors to organise seminars and forward action plans on the observance. The Left-led Kerala government, as well as the Congress-led UDF opposition, had opposed the directive, calling it unnecessary and divisive. The state had instructed universities and colleges not to observe the day, with the SFI warning of protests if any institution followed the order.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Kerala

Asad Owaisi criticises meat ban on I-Day

Hyderabad: Hyderabad MP and AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi has criticised the decision to close slaughterhouses and meat shops on Independence Day, August 15, calling the move by municipal corporations unconstitutional. Owaisi said that various municipal corporations across India, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), ordering the closure of slaughterhouses and meat shops on India's Independence Day is callous and unconstitutional. He questioned the logic behind the meat ban and celebrating Independence Day. On social media, Owaisi posted, 'Many municipal corporations across India seem to have ordered that slaughterhouses and meat shops should be closed on 15th August. Unfortunately, GHMC has also made a similar order. This is callous and unconstitutional.' He continued, 'What's the connection between eating meat and celebrating Independence Day? 99% of Telangana's people eat meat. These meat bans violate people's right to liberty, privacy, livelihood, culture, nutrition & religion.' The GHMC has issued orders for the closure of cattle slaughterhouses and retail beef shops on August 15 and August 16 on account of Independence Day and Janmashtami, respectively. The Municipal Corporation issued the order under section 533 (b) of the GHMC Act, 1955. The GHMC Commissioner sent the order to the Police Commissioners of Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda. Asad Owaisi called on civic authorities to reconsider such decisions, highlighting the impact on the livelihoods of those dependent on the meat trade and emphasising the need to uphold personal freedoms and cultural diversity in the country.
