Elmo's X account gets hacked, posts antisemitic and racist messages
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Hackers broke into the X account of Sesame Street character Elmo and posted antisemitic and racist messages, the makers of the children's TV show said on Monday.
The Sunday posts, which have been deleted, called for violence against Jews, insulted President Donald Trump and demanded the release of government files on accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged clientele.
Elmo, a cheerful red Muppet, has more than 650,000 followers on X.
"Elmo's X account was briefly compromised by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts," Sesame Workshop said in a statement, adding the account has since been secured.
X came under scrutiny last week when the account of the Grok chatbot developed by billionaire Elon Musk's company xAI produced content with antisemitic tropes. The posts were subsequently removed and called "inappropriate" by Grok's X account.
Since Musk bought what was then known as Twitter in 2022, he has cut back on moderation. Extremist content has increased, causing some advertisers to pull away from the platform.

We don't want criminals, we don't want violence or people who come from outside to make trouble here," Abdelali, an informal spokesperson for the Moroccan community who has lived in the town for 25 years, told reporters. Late on Monday, the messaging app Telegram shuttered a channel named "DeportThemNowSpain" for "inciting violence". Reuters reviewed dozens of messages in the channel that included expletive-laden calls to attack Moroccans residing in Torre Pacheco or set fire to their homes. The Spanish Interior Ministry said police in Mataro, near Barcelona, had arrested an unnamed leader of supremacist movement "Deport Them Now Europe" suspected of inciting hatred and seized two computers. As shown in screenshots, the now-deleted tweets include a lengthy post that threatens the lives of Jewish people and accuses United States President Donald Trump of being a 'puppet' of Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. There was another post directly mentioning Donald Trump and calling for him to release the Epstein Files, a collection of documents containing information related to serial sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The files are the subject of public interest as they allegedly contain names of high-profile individuals, including Donald Trump, who could incriminate them for being accomplices to Jeffrey Epstein's crimes. It's believed that Elmo's account was hacked by an individual with disdain towards the President of the United States and his denial of the files, despite having a close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The tweets have gone viral, sparking discussion amongst netizens. While many were shocked by the hacking, others poked fun at the issue. Some even joked that Elmo's account was hacked by rapper Kanye West, who has shared many controversial tweets in his career. Thankfully, the Sesame Workshop has since regained control of Elmo's Twitter account. Russia says it destroys 55 Ukrainian drones overnight, one person injured
(Reuters) -One person was injured as a result of Ukraine's overnight drone attack on the city of Yelets in Russia's southwestern region of Lipetsk, regional governor Igor Artamonov said early on Tuesday. "A UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) crashed in an industrial zone. One person was injured and is receiving all necessary medical assistance," Artamonov said on the Telegram messaging app.
