Man Utd transfer boost with injury to former flop, 32, set to spark £40m Rasmus Hojlund bidding war
RASMUS HOJLUND has attracted huge interest from Napoli after former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku was ruled out for three months. The reigning Serie A champions have asked about a loan deal for the Denmark striker, who is admired by manager Antonio Conte. 4 4 It comes hours after fellow Italian side AC Milan officially confirmed their interest in Hojlund, 22, who is open to a move and has been on Fulham's radar. Hojlund was left out of the matchday squad for United's 1-0 home defeat by Arsenal in their season opener on Sunday. It is understood boss Ruben Amorim took the decision amid intense speculation over the striker's future. Benjamin Sesko, who came on as a substitute, is expected to be Amorim's first choice in the position following his recent arrival from RB Leipzig, with Matheus Cunha ideally one of the two No10s in Amorim's system. United are believed to be asking for £40million for the Dane, but they could entertain a loan under the right conditions. Napoli are now considering making a move for Hojlund after Lukaku, 32, limped off the pitch during a pre-season friendly against Olympiacos last week. Ex-Old Trafford flop Lukaku is expected to be sidelined for three months after tearing a muscle in his thigh. Napoli released a statement on Monday, which read: "Following the injury, Romelu Lukaku underwent tests at Pineta Grande Hospital, which revealed a high-grade injury to the rectus femoris muscle in his left thigh. "The Napoli player has already begun rehabilitation and will also undergo surgical consultation." Should Hojlund be brought in to fill Lukaku's place, he'll reunite with former United teammate Scott McTominay, who turned his career around in Italy after signing for £25m. McTominay, 28, has excelled since joining the Naples outfit last summer, winning the Serie A Player of the Year award and a Ballon d'Or nod. Napoli can offer Hojlund European football that the Red Devils can't, with Conte's men competing in the Champions League for a second straight season. Hojlund, who joined for £72m two years ago, was United's main striker last season but scored just 10 goals in 52 games. His debut campaign brought 16 goals after his move from Italian side Atalanta. Teenager Chido Obi, 17, featured for the first team last season although it is unlikely he would be regarded as a regular starter, with his involvement likely to come from the bench. Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho has turned down Roma's £20m offer to United, with the winger set to explore other options. 4

Andy Halliday 'livid' at response to Rangers criticism
Appearing on Open Goal, the Motherwell midfielder went through Russell Martin's set-up from his side's 1-1 draw with Dundee. In that show, Halliday said: 'Dundee played a 5-4-1, really compact, really tight, really deep and narrow. Rangers went with a flat back four and they had five players attacking eleven players. How are you going to create chances and score goals if you're five v eleven? 'You would struggle to score against kids in training if you were five v eleven. And do you know what they keep doing because there's nothing else on? They play a straight pass into Cyriel Dessers and when they lose the ball there's f***** nobody in the middle of the pitch. 'People talk about Rangers having inverted full backs but that's a pure myth.' This led to some media outlets claiming Halliday told Martin that he didn't know what he was doing. Martin responded on Friday afternoon, where he cooled any talk around the subject by saying he and Halliday would chat it over a coffee in Glasgow's west end. Now, Halliday has reacted to the clip that went viral last week. He said: "On Thursday morning I was genuinely livid. I didn't know whether my head was gone or whether I was angry. I didn't know where I was. "Just how blown out of context it was, it was mental man. "He [Martin] could've just seen it on social media and not even watched the clip, and believed that I said 'What you doing, Russ?' Read more: "Then 'Halliday lambasts Russell Martin's tactics,' after we'd been saying for 15 minutes I think he's going to get it right. I mean f*****g hell man. "Even after calming down, I say calming down, after a few phone calls and finding out what's what, I'd still not heard back from him because they're obviously training. "I just wanted to make sure that either he'd seen the full thing or he's not taken it the wrong way. "His response meant that we could then laugh and joke about it."

Russell Martin tells mum he's okay amid Rangers criticism
The former Southampton boss has made an unconvincing start to life at Ibrox, with two league draws in their opening Scottish Premiership games against Motherwell and Dundee. Saturday's 4-2 victory over League One minnows Alloa hardly set pulses racing either. However, Martin has guided the club to within just 180 minutes of the league phase of the Champions League. Rangers host Club Brugge in the first leg of their UCL play-off tomorrow night, with the return leg in Belgium next midweek. So, while it's been far from plain sailing for the 39-year-old, he knows that brighter times could lie ahead in the near future. "A lot of people have messaged me who have read message boards and stuff, who are concerned about me," Martin told the media. "They just don't have to be. "I keep telling my mum 'Don't worry about it, it's all good, I'm enjoying it'. Read more: "I appreciate the honour of managing this club every day and the gratitude I feel for that. So, let's have that in the building. "I said to the staff the other day that so many of them support the club, but I think they've lost a bit of joy or being here and working here. "So, let's get back here and understand how brilliant it could be, and focus on what we can control and that is playing with so much energy tomorrow and really feed off it."
