Vengsarkar: 'BCCI Must Not Pander To Short-Sightedness Of Captains And Coaches'

Last Updated: Dilip Vengsarkar praised the balanced pitches in the India–England Test series, urging BCCI to replicate them for upcoming series against West Indies and South Africa. Among the many discussion points from the recently concluded India–England Test series, the quality of the pitches deserves more attention. Across all five matches, the playing surfaces offered an excellent balance between bat and ball, ensuring competitive cricket that extended to the fifth and final day each time. In an era where home advantage often heavily favours the host nation, particularly when India tours abroad, this series stood out for producing fair, sporting wickets that drew no major complaints from either side. Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar praised the series as an example of how pitch quality can enhance Test cricket. 'I must appreciate the culture of Test cricket in England. There were huge crowds for all the Tests, and the sporting wickets ensured that the result of all five Tests was decided on the fifth and final day. This series, which will be remembered for ages, has revived interest in Test cricket among cricket lovers. It has increased Test cricket's importance. This shows that if you dish out good pitches, Test cricket can not just survive, but flourish too," Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by TOI. What Does Dilip Vengsarkar Want For India? 'I hope that India do the same in their upcoming international season (two Tests each against West Indies and South Africa) and provide good, sporting wickets for Tests. The BCCI must not pander to the short-sightedness of captains and coaches, who are just looking for short-term gains by winning matches and qualifying for the World Test Championship final," Vengsarkar added. The inaugural Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy turned out to be one of the most closely fought contests between the two nations, ending in a 2–2 draw. India clinched the final Test with a thrilling 6-run win at The Oval. Batters largely dominated the early days of each match before bowlers came into their own as the pitches wore down, creating an enthralling ebb and flow. However, the ICC's pitch ratings offered a more measured verdict. Of the four matches rated so far, only the Headingley surface from the first Test was deemed 'very good," while the next three — Edgbaston, Lord's, and Old Trafford — were rated merely 'satisfactory." The assessment for The Oval pitch is still awaited. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Gavaskar questions England: Were Tendulkar and Anderson invited to trophy ceremony?

Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has questioned the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the organisation of the presentation ceremony following the five-Test series between England and India. Gavaskar asked whether Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson were not invited to the ceremony after the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ended in a drew parallels with how he was excluded from the presentation when Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year. The former India captain said it would have been fitting to have Tendulkar and Anderson, both of whom were in England at the time, present for the won the fifth and final Test at The Oval, outclassing England in a thrilling final day. England fell just six runs short after being set a target of 374. The hosts appeared on course for victory after centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook in the final innings, but a dramatic collapse from 301 for 3 saw them bowled out for 367. Mohammed Siraj, with a five-wicket haul, and Prasidh Krishna rattled England on the morning of Day 5 when the visitors needed only 35 runs with four wickets in hand. "This was the first-ever series named after Sachin Tendulkar and Jimmy Anderson, two of cricket's greatest legends. One would have expected both to be present to hand the trophy to the two captains, especially since the series ended in a draw. To the best of one's knowledge, both were in England at the time. So, were they simply not invited?" Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar."Or was this similar to what happened in Australia earlier this year, when only Allan Border was asked to present the Border-Gavaskar Trophy because Australia had won the series? Since this England series was drawn, perhaps neither was asked to attend the presentation."Notably, Gavaskar was among those who questioned the renaming of the trophy from the Pataudi Trophy to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The batting legend also opined that the trophy should be named Tendulkar-Anderson, rather than backlash, the ECB announced that the winning captain would receive the Pataudi Medal, thereby ensuring the cricketing family's name remained associated with the high-profile series.'NOBODY FROM PATAUDI FAMILY WAS THERE'The Pataudi Medal was shared between Ben Stokes and Shubman Gill after the series ended in a draw. Gavaskar stated that the medal should be awarded to the Player of the Series rather than the winning captain."Mostly around the world, administrators are brought in to ensure profits and are quite good at it, but they may not have much knowledge about the history of the sport they are presiding over. So, these little gestures are not in their scheme of things. Nobody from the Pataudi family was there either, for the Pataudi Medal, which was to be presented to the winning team's drawn series showed how foolish this idea was of trying to make amends to the Pataudis by retiring the trophy named after them. Every time the series is drawn, the medal can't be presented, can it? Wouldn't it be better, therefore, to award the medal to the Man of the Series rather than the winning team's captain? And what if the captain himself had an ordinary series and little impact on the result?"If there had been a result and the Pataudi Medal had to be given to the Man of the Series, it would have been a tough choice, for both skippers were simply outstanding," he Gill won the Player of the Series award for his outstanding batting contribution. The Punjab batsman, in his maiden series as captain, scored 754 runs in 10 innings, breaking numerous records. Opposition coach Brendon McCullum named Gill as India's most valuable Harry Brook, and not Ben Stokes, was named England's Player of the Series. Stokes led his team admirably and bowled with great heart, taking 21 wickets in four matches. England missed Stokes' services in the final Test as the captain sat out due to a shoulder injury.- EndsYou May Also Like

Watch: Fan Grabs 'Best Catch Of The Year' While Having Two Vodka Cans In Other Hand

As Tim David smashed 83 runs off just 52 balls in Australia's 17-run victory over South Africa in the first T20I, one of the fans in the stands at the Marrara Oval in Darwin experienced a moment to cherish forever. Harry Gill, 26, had two cans of vodka on one hand, when he pulled off a stunning one-handed catch, latching on to one of Tim David's eight massive sixes. Gill has shot to fame after the moment, and may even get lifetime sponsorship deals. In the 12th over of the Australian innings, David smashed one over the deep square-leg boundary for a maximum. While the South African fielders had no choice but to watch the ball sail over the ropes, Gill grabbed a stunner with one hand. "I had a bit of time, but it was just coming straight for me. I was praying I didn't drop it," said Gill, a pilot by profession, speaking to Australia-based news outlet The Age. "It just stuck. My hand is a bit sore this morning but, yeah, happy with it. My phone is blowing up," Gill further said. Watch: Fan takes one-handed stunner CALLING IT - BEST CROWD CATCH OF THE YEAR AND IT'S ONLY AUGUST! "We're getting his address and he'll be getting whatever. We'll have something dropped off at his house every month. We're going to fly him down to Sydney at the end of the year for our Christmas party," he added. Gill elaborated on his rise to fame overnight, revealing that he had been called up by people who he had lost touch with. "People I haven't spoken to in 10 years have been in contact," Gill revealed. Meanwhile, Tim David's blistering power-hitting and Josh Hazlewood 's incisive bowling spell set up helped Australia secure a record ninth consecutive T20I victory with a 17-run win over South Africa in the series opener at Marrara Stadium on Sunday. Australia were in trouble at 74/6, but David struck 83 off 52 balls, where he mixed strike rotation with trademark six-hitting to rescue the hosts' innings. He also shared a seventh-wicket stand of 59 with Ben Dwarshuis, as Australia made a competitive 178 in 20 overs. In reply, Hazlewood picked 3-27, including two crucial strikes in the 15th over, while Ben Dwarshuis took 3-26 as South Africa were restricted for 161/9.
