Pithoragarh: A 54-year-old grocery shop owner who had contested and lost the recent panchayat elections in Pithoragarh district was found dead on Saturday evening, with police suspecting suicide.
Lakshman Giri, a resident of Pithoragarh's Lelu village, had secured just 15 votes and placed last among five candidates for the post of block development committee (BDC) member from Lelu.
A day after the results, he visited Wadda and was returning home in the evening when a local saw him vomiting and informed his family. His son Rohit rushed to the spot and found him unconscious. Giri was taken to the district hospital, where he died later that night.
"Initial signs suggest he may have consumed poison. Suicide is suspected, but we're investigating all possible angles," said SHO Lalat Mohan Joshi of Pithoragarh police station.
Police said Giri may have been shocked by the results, but added that other triggers, including personal and business-related issues, are also being looked into. Since Lelu falls under the jurisdiction of Jajardewal police station, the case has been transferred there. The body was handed over to the family after postmortem examination.

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala criticised the incident, linking it to the ongoing electoral roll revision in the state. Fake Drone Alert: Two YouTubers Held For Spreading False Panic In Meerut

Two female YouTubers were creating fake content about drone sightings just to get more views and followers online. Police in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, recently increased patrolling after people reported spotting suspicious drones in nearby areas. Many feared that drone thieves were active, which made locals worried and alert. But after the investigation, police found that the sightings were not real. Instead, two female YouTubers were behind the false stories. They were creating fake content about drone sightings just to get more views and followers online. Both women were taken into custody but were later released on bail after police questioned them. Surprisingly, it's not the first time something like this has happened in Uttar Pradesh. The two content creators involved in the case were identified as Laiba Mantasha and Meenakshi Singh. A part of their video is now going viral on social media. In the clip, one of them can be heard saying that she was out at 3 AM looking for a drone thief. Although no actual person was shown in the video, she acted as if she was chasing someone. She told her followers to stay alert and claimed that there were others also helping her to catch the thief. She even said that she will reveal who the thief was. All of this was done to create suspense and attract more viewers. — Pankaj (@AtWorkAmarUjala) August 6, 2025 Just last week, several people in Meerut were sent to jail for a similar case, spreading fake news about drone sightings. According to a Times of India report, police found 28 misleading posts on social media and registered 15 FIRs. So far, 8 people have been arrested. Meerut SSP, Vipin Tada, shared that the cyber team looked into different platforms like Instagram, Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). They found 19 fake posts were on Instagram, 7 on Facebook and 2 on X. The police are still checking these platforms to stop false information and avoid public panic. Tada said, 'These false claims of drone activity triggered panic and unrest in parts of the district. So far, we have arrested eight people and sent them to jail." One of the residents recalled, 'Men from the nearby forested areas tried to barge into our homes at night. We stayed up all night to keep watch. We even called 112, the police came, but did little. The drone sightings are real. Even the officers who came acknowledged it, but no serious action followed." According to reports, most of the FIRs were filed in rural parts of Meerut. These include areas like Partapur, Parikshitgarh, Mundali and Sardhana. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
