The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend with one driver looking to claim the In-Season Challenge championship and another driver seeking to complete a career grand slam.
Here is a look at the good news and bad news for Cup teams heading into Sunday's race.
23XI Racing — Good news: Tyler Reddick won the pole, led 40 laps and finished second at Indianapolis last year. … Reddick has an average finish of 5.0 at Indy in both of his starts on the Indy oval. … Reddick has three top-10 finishes in the last four races this season. … Bubba Wallace placed fifth and won a stage last year at Indianapolis. ... Wallace has finished in the top 10 in his last three starts on the Indy oval. … Riley Herbst won last year's Xfinity race at Indianapolis. Bad news: The organization remains winless this season (it had one victory at this point last year). … The organization has had fewer top-five finishes, fewer top 10s and led fewer laps compared to this time a year ago.

Front Row Motorsports — Good news: Todd Gilliland finished sixth at Indianapolis last year. … Noah Gragson finished ninth at Indy last year. … Zane Smith placed 17th last year at Indy. Bad news: Gilliland has place outside the top 20 in eight consecutive races. … Gragson has one finish in the top 25 in the last eight races.
Haas Factory Team — Good news: Cole Custer finished fifth in his only Cup start on the Indy oval in 2020. Bad News: Custer has been no higher than 34th in the points since the second race of the season.
Hendrick Motorsports — Good news: For the second year in a row, Chase Elliott is the points leader heading to Indianapolis. … Elliott took the points lead from William Byron last weekend at Dover. … In the last five races, Elliott went from being 104 points out of the lead to holding a 16-point advantage. … Kyle Larson won last year's Indianapolis race in double overtime. Bad news: Byron has an average finish of 25.3 in the last six races, ranking 31st among the 36 full-time drivers. … Byron has finished 27th or worse in his last two starts on the Indy oval. … Alex Bowman has never finished better than 21st in six Indy starts on the oval. … Bowman has finished on the lead lap once on the oval at Indy.
Hyak Motorsports — Good news: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished 11th on the oval at Indy last year, the second-best result for the organization at that track (Chris Buescher placed ninth there in 2017). Bad news: Stenhouse has two top-20 finishes in the last eight races this season.
Joe Gibbs Racing — Good news: Ty Gibbs will race Ty Dillon for $1 million in the final of the In-Season Challenge at Indianapolis. … Gibbs has finished in the top 10 in each of the last three races. … Chase Briscoe won and Denny Hamlin was second at Pocono, a track that has some similarities to Indianapolis. … Hamlin has a series-high four wins this season after his victory last weekend at Dover. … A win at Indy would make Hamlin the fifth driver to ever win the sport's four crown jewels (Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600, Brickyard 400 and Southern 500), joining a list that has Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick. … Briscoe has finished second in each of the last two races. … Briscoe has placed either first or second in three of the last five races. … Briscoe's eight top-five finishes this season are a career-high. … Christopher Bell finished fourth at Indy last year. Bad news: Bell has finished 16th or worse in five of the last seven races.
Kaulig Racing — Good news: Ty Dillon's Cinderella run through the In-Season Challenge continues with him racing Ty Gibbs for the $1 million prize Sunday at Indianapolis. … Dillon finished 19th in last year's race at Indy, while Gibbs placed 23rd. … Dillon has scored four consecutive top-20 Cup finishes for the first time since 2022. … Dillon's only Xfinity win came at Indy in 2014. Bad news: AJ Allmendinger is coming of a 37th-place finish at Dover after a suspension issue, snapping a streak of three consecutive top-20 finishes.
Legacy Motor Club — Good news: The organization has four top-five finishes (it had none at this time last year) and 10 top 10s (compared to four at this time last year). Bad news: Erik Jones' average finish of 26.6 at Indianapolis is his worst among tracks he has made multiple starts. … John Hunter Nemechek has placed outside the top 20 in three of the last four races this season.
Richard Childress Racing — Good news: Austin Dillon's 15th-place result at Dover was his best finish since Texas in May. … Kyle Busch has finished 11th or better in the last three races. … RCR Xfinity driver Jesse Love will make his fourth career Cup start, driving the No. 62 for Beard Motorsports this weekend. Bad news: Busch has not led a lap in the last nine races, tied for the longest streak in his career.
Rick Ware Racing — Good news: Cody Ware finished 18th at Indy last year, one of his best finishes in a limited Cup schedule in 2024. Bad news: Ware is coming off a 36th-place finish at Dover, his worst finish since Bristol in April.
RFK Racing — Good news: Brad Keselowski has five top-10 finishes in the last nine races after having no top 10s in the season's first 12 races. … Keselowski is one of three former winners on the Indy oval entered this week (Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson are the others). … Chris Buescher has six top-10 finishes in the last 10 races. Bad news: Ryan Preece has an average finish of 27.3 at Indianapolis, his worst among active tracks. … Preece lost 13 points to the playoff cutline at Dover and is now 16 points out of the final playoff spot.
Spire Motorsports — Good news: The organization has twice as many top-five finishes (four) and top-10 finishes (eight) as it did at this point last season. … Michael McDowell has had back-to-back top-20 finishes for the first time since March. … Justin Haley also has had back-to-back top-20 finishes for the first time since March. Bad news: Carson Hocevar has finished 29th or worse in five of the last seven races.
Team Penske — Good news: Ryan Blaney finished third and Austin Cindric placed seventh in last year's race at Indy. … Joey Logano has three consecutive top-15 finishes for the first time since April. Bad news: The organization has not had a top-five finish in the last four races, one short of its longest drought of the season. … Blaney has three top-10 finishes in the last nine races.
Trackhouse Racing — Good news: Daniel Suarez has an average finish of 12.8 on the Indy oval, his best among all tracks with multiple starts. Bad news: Saurez has finished outside the top 25 in three of the last four races. Ross Chastain has only three top-10 finishes in the last 10 races. … Chastain has never finished better than 15th in four starts on the Indy oval. … Shane van Gisbergen has one top-20 finish in his last five starts on oval tracks this season.
Wood Brothers Racing — Good news: Josh Berry has started in the top 15 in three of the last four races on oval tracks this season. Bad news: Berry finished 35th last year at Indy in his only Cup start on the oval there. … Berry has failed to finish two of the last four races this season.

What to watch for in tonight's NASCAR Cup race at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. — Last summer's race at Richmond saw a driver score their first victory of the season. If that happens tonight, the playoff race could change dramatically. Austin Dillon won the race at Richmond last August, but NASCAR didn't count his victory toward playoff eligibility after he wrecked Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin on the final lap to win. With eight of the top 12 starters in tonight's race seeking their first win of the season and clinch a spot in the playoffs, the intensity should be high for this 400-lap race. Here is what to watch for in tonight's race on USA Network (coverage begins at 7 p.m. ET): Can RFK Racing claim one of the last playoff spots? Ryan Preece, the first driver outside a playoff spot, will lead the field to the green flag after scoring his second career Cup pole. Preece trails RFK Racing teammate Chris Buescher by 34 points for the final playoff spot. Buescher starts 12th. 'I'm just grateful to be a part of this opportunity or to have this opportunity because it's been a lot of fun,' said Preece, who seeks to make the Cup playoffs for the first time. 'It's been a lot of fun for me as a racer who has put a lot into my career and really been able to finally put something together that is allowing me to go and contend.' Dustin Long, Team co-owner Brad Keselowski, who needs a win to make the playoffs, starts sixth. He notes that life outside a playoff spot this late in the regular season is 'not a fun place to live. You want to just go out and win and not worry about it. We had a couple of shots to do that. They just slipped through our fingers, which was kind of disappointing. We need to capitalize on that opportunity when it comes.' Buescher looks to avoid a repeat of last year. Chase Briscoe's Southern 500 victory in the regular season finale claimed the final playoff spot and eliminated Buescher, who had held that spot entering the race. If not RFK, then who could get their first win? Tyler Reddick, who starts second, could clinch a playoff spot even if he doesn't win tonight due to his points advantage. Alex Bowman, who starts ninth, enters the race in a playoff spot. He's average finish of 9.3 in the last nine races is the best in the series. Nate Ryan, 'Obviously it's a stressful time of the year and team is all in right now,' Bowman told NBC Sports. 'Where some guys can take these couple of weeks to prepare for the playoffs, we are not doing that. Obviously, we're still preparing ahead and everything but just we are all in every week right now trying to perform the best we can. 'We need to win. That would make life less stressful but we've been doing a lot of good things.' Can the momentum continue for two drivers? Ryan Blaney and Bubba Wallace both enter this race having scored four consecutive top-10 finishes. 'I think we've been executing really well,' said Blaney, who starts 20th. 'Haven't really been making mistakes anywhere and our cars have just been where they need to be. 'I've been really happy with the little bit of consistent finishes, finishing in the area that we should. Really hadn't had that a lot this year, just had a lot of unfortunate things happening but we just waited it out and kept doing our job and this is definitely where this team should be at and where they deserve.' Said Wallace, who starts seventh, about the momentum from his Indianapolis victory in this run: 'It's really nice just to see everybody performing at the levels that we all should be performing and seeing the results come through. That kind of validates everybody's efforts.' Who makes the right call on pit road? Richmond's abrasive track surface leads to tire wear. Add in Goodyear's soft tire and that could make tire strategy key. Teams have eight sets of new tires along with the set of tires they'll start the race. The right side tire is the same as the right sides that were used with the option set in the race last August. The left side tires this weekend are softer than what was used in that race last year. While Keselowski raised concerns about if it teams would have enough sets for the race, NASCAR and Goodyear expressed confidence in what they saw in tire fall-off in practice Friday. Managing tires and when to put on a new set of tires could be key in determining who wins.

It's nearly time for playoff racing in NASCAR. The Cup Series enters its penultimate regular-season race this weekend at one of the oldest ovals on the calendar: Richmond Raceway. It's a welcome return to oval racing for every Cup Series driver not named Shane van Gisbergen. The Trackhouse Racing driver continued his dominant form on road courses this season with a win last week at Watkins Glen International. That marked his fourth win of the season - all on road or street courses - and further cemented his status as NASCAR's top road course ace. His victory also tied him with Denny Hamlin for the most in the Cup Series this season. Now, NASCAR goes from the sweeping corners of Watkins Glen to the flat short oval in Richmond, Virginia. It's one of the tougher tracks when it comes to tire wear with similar characteristics to what the drivers faced in Iowa just a few weeks ago. With just two races to go before the 10-race postseason begins, there are three spots remaining in the 16-driver playoff field. That's good news for Tyler Reddick; the 23XI Racing driver has yet to win this season but is currently the first driver in the playoff field on points. Reddick sits ahead of Alex Bowman and Chris Buescher, while Ryan Preece, who the pole for Saturday night's race, is the first driver on the outside of the bubble in 17th. Reddick has never won at Richmond but holds a 117-point advantage over the cutoff line and needs to earn just 30 points to clinch a playoff berth. RICHMOND, Va. — Brad Keselowski questions if teams will have enough sets of tires for Saturday night's Cup race at Richmond Raceway, but NASCAR does not plan on approving additional sets for teams before the 400-lap race. Richmond Raceway's abrasive track surface and a softer tire by Goodyear have Keselowski and others in the garage concerned ahead of Saturday's race (coverage begins at 7 p.m. ET on USA Network). Nate Ryan, 'We're in trouble,' Keselowski said when asked by NBC Sports if there are enough sets of tires for teams to run the race. Keselowski admitted 'I might be wrong. Maybe something will change and we'll get in the night time and the tires will extend their life cycle more than what we've seen in practice. But right now it does not look good.' Teams will have eight sets of new tires plus the set of tires they will start Saturday's race. NASCAR, in consultation with Goodyear, determines how many sets of tires teams are allowed per race. Dustin Long, Blake Harris, crew chief for Alex Bowman, said a request was made for an extra set of tires. Without an extra set, what does Harris envision Saturday night's race? 'It's kind of like the Truck race,' Harris told NBC Sports. 'They don't get enough tires and it's boring. Nobody passes. Nobody can be on off-strategies. Everybody doesn't stop the first stage and everybody two-stops the second and third stage and then you've got one set for one caution the whole race. … You don't put tires on until you have to.' Lap times in Friday's Cup practice showed more than a three-second falloff in time from a driver's best lap to about 40 laps into a run. Drivers have continually asked Goodyear to bring a softer tire to tracks so there is more tire wear. The right side tire teams have this weekend is the same as the option tire that was used in this race last year. The left-side tire is 'uber soft,' according Rick Heinrich, product manager for Goodyear. Heinrich was pleased with what he saw in Friday's practice with tire wear. 'They've really performed spot-on because we're seeing that kind of fall-off,' Heinrich told NBC Sports about the tires. 'We're not seeing people showing that they can't go as far as they're going to have to go (Saturday) night. You're going to have to put at lease 37 laps on a set of tires to able to make the math work. We're seeing people go well beyond that.' During Friday's practice, Joey Logano hit the wall after his right front tire lost air pressure. 'What happened to the tire was a consequence of air pressure, but we don't know … what led to that,' Heinrich said. The right-side and left-side tires used at Richmond have been run at Martinsville, Bowman Gray and North Wilkesboro earlier this season. Heinrich confirmed that the Richmond tires will be used for next month's playoff race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Heinrich said no decision has been made on what tires will be used for Martinsville — the penultimate race in the playoffs — and the championship race at Phoenix. 'We want to make sure we're as educated as possible before we make that call,' Heinrich said. '(Saturday) is important for us. What we see, the data, it helps us build that knowledge base to be able to move forward.'
