Four star basketball recruit considering an HBCU
On Monday, July 21, Christopher Washington Jr., the No. 1 basketball prospect in Tennessee, included FAMU in his top seven college choices. The four-star forward also named Alabama, Auburn, Cincinnati, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Villanova-all powerhouse programs known for high-level competition.
In an interview with On3's Jamie Shaw, Washington explained what he's looking for in a college:"I want to go somewhere that feels like a family. And I want to play early, so I want to go somewhere I'll play right away. How they play will be big for me. I like playing fast and playing on the wing. Location won't matter to me as long as it feels like family there."
Washington, a 6-foot-7, 175-pound small forward, plays for Providence Christian Academy in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He is rated the No. 13 small forward nationally and 31st overall by 247Sports.
Originally from Gainesville, Florida, Washington began his high school career at The Villages Charter School before transferring to Providence as a junior. His inclusion of an HBCU in a list packed with Power Five programs signals growing respect for what Coach Ward is building at FAMU.
Ward was officially named Florida A&M men's basketball head coach on April?16,?2025, replacing Patrick Crarey II, who departed to lead Grambling State after just one season there. This marks Ward's first college head coaching role. The former Heisman Trophy winner and 11-year NBA veteran arrives amid renewed optimism, aiming to build on FAMU's progress and bring new energy to the Rattlers program. With his storied history in Tallahassee, the season is setting up for a pristine opportunity of community support and high-level basketball.

Saquon Barkley 'shocked' to be named to Donald Trump's presidential sports council, says he won't be participating
President Donald Trump's White House announced on Aug. 1 first that Saquon Barkley would be a member of his newly formed council on sports, fitness, and nutrition. It appears that that was news to Barkley. Barkley said Monday that he was "shocked" that his name was included as a council member and that he will not be participating. The All-Pro Philadelphia Eagles running back addressed the subject with reporters at training camp Monday. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] "A couple of months ago, it was brought to my team about the council," Barkley said. "So, I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I'm going to be super busy, so me and my family thought it probably was in our best interest to not accept that. "Was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned, but I'm assuming it's something great. So I appreciate it. But was a little shocked when my name was mentioned." The White House previously issued a news release about the council that named several prominent athletes and sports figures who would participate, Barkley included. "The council will include executive director Catherine Granito, chair Bryson DeChambeau, Saquon Barkley, Gary Bettman, Nick Bosa, Harrison Butker, Cody Campbell, Roger Goodell, Wayne Gretzky, Nelly Korda, Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Mariano Rivera, Tony Romo, Annika Sörenstam, Tua Tagovailoa, Lawrence Taylor, Matthew Tkachuk, and Mariano Rivera," the statement reads. None of the other athletes named have said that they won't be participating. Taylor and "Triple H" flanked Trump during a news conference addressing the council. Barkley, a three-time Pro Bowler who earned NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2024 during Philadelphia's run to the Super Bowl championship, has previously made public appearances with Trump. Barkley golfed with Trump in April in New Jersey, then flew with Trump to Washington D.C. and visited the White House ahead of the Eagles' official visit to commemorate their Super Bowl victory. Barkley's visit prompted criticism, to which he responded on social media that he respects the office of the president. John Schneider: Noah Fant was a "pure cap casaulty"
As training camp opened, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald declined to delve into the reasons for the decision to release veteran tight end Noah Fant. On Monday, Seahawks G.M. John Schneider disclosed the one reason for the move. Appearing on Seattle Sports, Schenider said Fant was a "pure cap casualty." "He works his tail off, he can run," Schneider said regarding Fant, via Michael-Shawn Dugar of "He's a good tight end and he'll have a a very nice productive year this year. We just felt like — in getting back to what I was saying about doing what's best for the organization — we were at a point where we were just saying to ourselves, 'OK, you know, can we — unfortunately, you have to look at things like this — like can we use that cash to help our team in a different manner? And are we OK at that position? And are we covered there? And while we never feel like we're totally covered, you know, guys did have very strong springs." And that's how it often goes with older, more expensive players. The Seahawks could have welcomed Fant to camp, gotten him ready for the season, and then asked him to take a pay cut when it otherwise would be too late to land elsewhere. Instead, they made a clean break. It gave him a chance to land with a new team. And he has landed with the Bengals. It wasn't a completely selfless move. The Seahawks risked owing him $8.49 million in salary this year, if he had suffered a season-ending injury during camp. They cleared that cash and cap obligation by moving on before camp opened.
