Ga-Rankuwa police heighten alert after carjacking attempt
In shared CCTV footage, a car is seen being blocked on its path by armed suspects wearing balaclavas, who then shoot at it.
According to Ga-Rankuwa SAPS spokesperson, Shimi Tsheole, the incident happened on the afternoon of August 5.
'The carjacking attempt occurred at around 16:34 near the Ga-Rankuwa Cemetery,' he said.
He said the victim was driving from work when she allegedly encountered a car with armed occupants wearing balaclavas.
'It is alleged that [the] complainant was driving from work to home when encountering a silver KIA with occupants wearing balaclavas and with firearms,' he said.
He added the suspects tried to block the victim's path before she could reverse her vehicle and flee the scene.
'The said suspects fired two shots at the victim as per the complaint received by the police.'
He said no suspect has been arrested, however, police are investigating a case of attempted carjacking and attempted murder.
'No suspects have been identified, therefore no arrests have been made so far. Investigation in this matter is still at an early stage,' he said.
Following the incident, Tsheole raised concern over increasing in crime in parts of Ga-Rankuwa.
'SAPS Ga-Rankuwa is however concerned with the increase in crime at a mountain along the M17 Road opposite Sefako Makgatho University,' he said.
He said crimes such as carjacking and armed robberies are more prevalent in that area.
'The place is a hunting ground for criminals. Police appeal to members of the community to refrain from using the mountain as a praying area,' he cautioned.
He added that Zone 14 is also a hotspot for crime, and the precinct usually experiences an increase in crime from Thursday to Sunday.
'The station usually experiences [a] slight increase from Thursday 20:00 to Sunday 02:00,' he said.

However, he also said the station's crime prevention tactics have resulted in the decrease of crime overall.
'Station commander Brigadier [Paballo] Nkosi increased her crime prevention operations around those areas, resulting in a significant decline in cases reported,' he said.
He added that intervention by the Tshwane District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine, through Operation Shanela is also playing a role in the decrease of crime in the areas.
The police urges community members to organise neighbourhood watches.

The rollout follows the department's 2024 investment in 36 new patrol vehicles to help overcome shortages of crime-fighting resources, particularly in rural and densely populated areas. 'We are working around the clock to ensure that community safety structures are operational, resourced, and active in supporting the work of Saps. It is only through this integrated approach that we will turn the tide against crime,' Ntuli said. SAPS honours KZN unit for bringing justice to 13 rape victims

Image: Supplied This Women's Month, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is shining a spotlight on the hard work and commitment of the KwaZulu-Natal Serial and Electronic Crimes Unit (SECI) in bringing a serial rapist to justice, providing closure for a community terrorised for over a decade. The SECI is being honoured for its success in securing justice for 13 women and children who were victims of rape by the same perpetrator over more than 10 years. The SAPS said the specialised unit brought much-needed relief to the women of KwaMbonambi and Empangeni in the King Cetshwayo District, who were living in fear of a serial rapist who was on the loose. Between July 2010 and April 2021, a total of 13 women were raped similarly. Twelve of these incidents occurred within the KwaMbonambi policing precinct, with one additional case reported in Empangeni. Analysis of the modus operandi and victim descriptions established the presence of a serial rapist targeting young women. Detectives from the unit promptly took over the case, immediately beginning to gather evidence. Police said 12 of the victims, with the youngest being a 15-year-old girl, were accosted by the suspect either on their way to school or returning from school. 'The suspect would drag the victims to the bushes, next to the river, or in the sugarcane fields where he raped them at knifepoint before robbing them of their belongings.' The SAPS reported that the suspect once broke into a house where an elderly woman was sleeping with her two grandchildren. 'At knifepoint, the suspect raped the two young women and robbed the grandmother of her money and other belongings.' From 2010, SECI investigators faced the monumental task of collating evidence. However, the SAPS said the unit's determination to expose the serial rapist and secure justice for the victims drove them to meticulously re-examine every single docket. 'Under the stewardship of Lieutenant Colonel Maxwell Nsele, the detectives cracked the cases and overwhelming forensic evidence positively linked 42-year-old Bhekithemba Fanozi Nxumalo to all 13 cases of rape.' The court sentenced Nxumalo to 12 terms of life imprisonment for rape, plus an additional 75 years in jail for cases of robbery on June 10, 2024. The SAPS further highlighted the unit's recent successes. Between April 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, the provincial SECI unit secured convictions leading to 18 life imprisonment sentences and an additional 425 years in jail. These sentences were for individuals convicted of serial rape, possession of child pornography, kidnapping, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), and robbery. Lusikisiki mass murder trial: State to call next witness
MTHATHA- A fifth witness will be called on to testify in the Lusikisiki mass murder trial in the Eastern Cape on Friday. On Thursday, a crime scene expert from the SAPS national office, who was deployed to process the deadly scene shared his testimony. Six men are accused of planning and carrying out the bloody hit on 18 relatives and community members during a gathering. They will return to the Mthatha High Court, sitting in Lusikisiki, on murder, firearms, and ammunition-related charges. So far, the state has led evidence from five witnesses in the matter. However, it remains unclear as to how many more witnesses are to be called due to safety issues. "As far as the witness process is concerned, yeah, we are happy that it is on-going now doesn't look like there is any hiccups," said David King, who speaks on behalf of the families.
