
The Weekend Run with Liam Gaskin - Hidden Wicklow gem and my verdict on Suzuki's latest offering
I take a road less travelled for this run.
Everyone is familiar with the Wicklow mountains, Blessington lakes and Powerscourt House in Enniskerry – and these routes are well ridden by motorcyclists. However, in Wicklow, there are places and roads that are neglected in the main by bikers, drivers and tourists.
In contrast to the barren but beautiful Wicklow mountains, I visit today the lush foothills of The Garden County. I start my run today in Kilbride, near Wicklow town and just off the N11. My first stop was Redcross, a name very familiar to N11 drivers but I bet a town most have never visited. This is a sleepy little town but renowned for the stud farms and riding schools locally.
The road from Redcross to Avoca, my next stop, is not great. I'd give it 5 out of 10 but it does go through beautiful countryside. I headed to Avoca which is famous for 'The Meeting of the Waters'. This is where the Avonmore and Avonbeg rivers converge to form the Avoca river. The location was made famous by Thomas Moore's song and poem by the same name. Take the road less travelled in Wicklow. I was foolishly misguided as I believed the Meeting of the Waters was in the village of Avoca – wrong.
You go over the bridge in Avoca heading to Woodenbridge, but instead of going left at the T-junction go right for four clicks and voila! You've arrived at the meeting of the waters. In full flow it is a great sight.
The road from Avoca village to the end of my run is first class and for a biker I would give it 8.5 out of 10.
Now you have to track back on yourself to get to Woodenbridge. Set in the magnificent Vale of Avoca, it is well known for one of the most beautiful golf courses in Ireland and Irelands oldest Hotel established in 1608, The Woodenbridge Hotel and Lodge. They won a Gold Medal Hotel award in 2024 so are still going strong.
Little known find – a small tranquil World War 1 memorial garden in the centre of the town alongside the river. It commemorates 1,215 Wicklow men and nine women who lost their lives in World War 1. It is well worth a visit. Meeting of the Waters in Avoca, Co Wicklow. Pic: Supplied
Leaving Woodenbridge, I headed to Arklow – a large town with an interesting quay and harbour. My sights were set on the run to Brittas Bay, a 4km stretch of golden beach, via the coast road. And what a road, narrow with great twists and bends and ups and downs, simply a great biking road. Brittas Bay is famous with Dubliners who make the pilgrimage there religiously in the summer when the sun comes out (which isn't too often).
I parked up and stretched my legs with a stroll on the beach before finishing the run at the infamous Jack White's food and drink emporium. If you don't know why this pub is famous, check it out online. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Now, my ambitions to be a MotoGp rider are long gone and the idea of riding a sports bike wasn't necessarily floating my boat but I was curious how it would perform.
The riding position on the 800 is upright which gives you a sense of real control over the machine. This is a bike I felt at one with. There was a connection between me, the bike and the road. I felt it was built for me.
I joined the M50 and weaved in and out of the traffic with great ease. The six-speed gearbox was as smooth as silk. Wanting to check out the torque I dropped it into to 4th gear and tickled the throttle and it took off. The speed of acceleration is astounding. The standard adjustable windscreen deflected most of the wind so I never felt I had to do my belly-on-tank impersonation of Valentino Rossi.
This is a really great bike to ride at any speed. I can see guys or gals commuting to work on it and touring at the weekend. The slip and assist clutch reduces lever effort and wrist fatigue. It genuinely is a doddle to drive in traffic.
I like to open up on the motorway and the 800 did everything I asked of it and had more to offer. I also like to tootle around housing estates to check handling in low gear and the Tiger tootled beautifully.
This is a lot of bike for not a lot of money (comparatively speaking). I am also impressed with some of the standard equipment such as wet, dry and fast (my definition) driving modes, optimised ABS cornering, switchable traction control, cruise control for the longer runs, adjustable windscreen which worked really well for me, and Bluetooth connectivity.
The Tiger starts at €14,895. If you have a few extra euro you can get heated grips – which I highly recommend – tyre pressure monitoring, a very useful auxiliary power socket and of course luggage boxes.
All in all The Triumph Tiger 800 Sport is a pussycat with a big bite. It's probably the bike I've most felt at one with for a very long time.
Change your tyres and helmet at least every five years – whether they look good or not.
Rubber erodes over time and although you haven't done huge mileage they can be dangerous. Your helmet also needs replacing by then as it will always have had a few knocks and bumps when you're handling it. The padding will also become weakened as the oils on your head and sweet damage it over time. Always better to be safe than sorry. Ali Horan is one to watch. Pic: Supplied

Ali only got her first motorbike in March 2024 — but from then on, she knew she'd found what she was meant to do.
It didn't take long before she made some big life changes: She left her full-time permanent job in the events industry and went freelance to give herself the freedom she needed to pursue motorbiking. She even gave up her apartment so she could pour every resource into riding.
She clocked over 20,000 km around Ireland and toured Morocco just 8 months after getting on a motorbike for the first time. She wanted to be on the road all the time.
She put her name down for a trail riding event taking place in Portugal in March 2025. Instead of flying in and shipping her gear, she rode the whole way down solo — covering over 6,000km through Spain and Portugal. That trip become the foundation for her YouTube channel, where she's documenting the journey from start to finish, including four days of dirt biking in the hills of Monchique.

Ger has had a very interesting career. He's been a journalist, national newspaper editor and – on occasion – a TV presenter. He currently writes a column in The Irish Mail on Sunday and is a practising barrister at law. This is an accomplished man who does not like being idle, and great company on a biking weekend.

Five days in Normandy visiting the D Day beaches. I'd highly recommend it.

‘I capture the scenes of people enjoying the city', says Dublin street photographer
Higo Figuera is a content creator who takes pictures and videos of the simple things that make Dublin what it is, from buses, street signs and clocks throughout the city. 'I always end up doom-scrolling, and it's just negativity all the time. I keep asking myself, 'Is Dublin that bad?' It can't be that bad,' he said. 'I see the beauty of Dublin. I've had an eye for film and travel photography ever since I was little. 'I'd be walking around to work or running some kind of errand, but I'd always find myself stopping and seeing something out of the corner of my eye. 'Just the aesthetic scene of people enjoying the city. I can't help but look and wonder what they're feeling. 'I choose these little aspects because they're part of the city. They never leave, and people go about their day never noticing these little things. 'But if you put all these little things together, they make up the soul of the city, and I wanted to put it all together where people can see the full story of what Dublin is like.' After moving from Enfield six years ago, Higo has learned that, despite the daily hardships people face, the sun brings out the best in Dubliners. 'I've learned that living in Dublin is hard, but at the same time people are still able to enjoy it,' he said. 'That's what I see every day, especially when it's sunny out, a group of friends just enjoying each other's company at the park, a mum and dad taking their child on a walk, or an owner and their dog going on a run. 'It's just people absorbing sunlight, feeling happy that they're in the city. I think it's really beautiful and that's pretty much the essence of the videos I put up. 'It's the little things happening around you and people are indeed happy. They're not bogged down by all the negativity online. 'Dublin is a very tight knit community. It feels like a village or a town, but in the skin of a city, and you get all the benefits of that,' he added.

Ralph McTell: 'The first time I played Cork was a bit of a disaster'
Ralph McTell has always had the wind in his hair. In 1962, as a 17-year-old, he hit the road, busking with his guitar around Europe. He didn't have a plan or know where he was going. He did buy a map before setting off, but it was in eight tattered pieces by the time he got to the south of France. It was a time when beatniks like himself hitchhiked everywhere because it was more 'noble'. 'I left home with a 10-shilling note inside the little pocket in my Levi jeans in case of an emergency,' says McTell. 'I had my guitar. The first time I had left home, I left with a blanket for image, but the second time I took a cheap sleeping bag. I hitchhiked on my own. I'd stay the night in places, have something to eat and move on. I had plans to get to India, but I only made it as far as Istanbul.' McTell is still on the road. As part of the celebrations for his 80th year, he's undertaking his biggest Irish tour yet, having first played in Ireland in Belfast in 1969, just as the Troubles were kicking off. He consistently returned to Northern Ireland when most of his peers sidestepped the war-torn region. In 1976, before one gig in Belfast, the audience gave him a standing ovation before he played a single note, just for turning up. McTell's maiden trip to Cork was anticlimactic. 'The first time I played Cork was at the Connolly Hall and I think there were 30 people there,' he says with a morbid chuckle. 'It was a bit of a disaster, but I'm delighted to say the last time I played there was at the Cork Opera House and it sold out. I've got some lovely friends down that way.' The legendary singer-songwriter shares a long friendship with the Dubliners, in particular with John Sheahan, and one-time member Jim McCann. McTell toured Australia at the same time as the group in 1975. His friendship with the late Luke Kelly goes back to the early 1960s, before McTell's professional music career took off. 'I first saw Luke Kelly in a folk club when I was quite young,' he says. 'Luke was a resident there. He was under the influence of Ewan MacColl and singers of that ilk, very left wing. I was interested mostly in simple country, old timey American music and banjos. Somebody said, 'Oh, there's this banjo player from Ireland up in north London.' I went to see him with a friend of mine. 'It was the first time I glimpsed what a passionate singer looks and sounds like. It was frightening – the way he delivered with no microphone, just the power of the voice and personality. He had a reputation of being a grumpy fella, but I always felt he had another life outside of music. "He was a deep thinker. Whenever I went to Dublin, I'd dig him out in his pub. He'd be sitting there with a heavy newspaper, a packet of Major cigarettes and a pint of stout. We were always pleased to see each other.' Luke Kelly was the first person McTell sent his song From Clare to Here to, one of the great ballads about Irish emigration. The song was released in 1976 – and has been covered by numerous artists, including Nanci Griffith – but its origins go back to an incident in the early 1960s when McTell was working as a labourer on a building site in south London. 'There was an Irish gang working on the site,' he says. 'There was one boy – I would say he was lying about his age, drawing men's wages – he was about 15. He was from rural Clare. Ralph McTell in London in 1975. Picture: Evening Standard/. "I never knew the town. I only ever knew him by his first name, and he probably had a different name for the [illegal] contract he was on. I tried to be a big brother to him. He was already getting locked into the Irish ghetto syndrome, where when you're away from home, you only stay with Irish lads, you drink your wages, and you have a hard time. 'We were digging a deep trench, down the bottom of this hole. I paused to roll a cigarette. I tried to make conversation. I said, 'It must be a bit odd for you, Michael, being over here, being from the country and all that.' "He answered by saying, 'Jaysus, it's a long way from Clare to here' and carried on digging. I always tell people if he had said, 'It's a long way from here to Clare' I would have accepted that and it would have gone, but because he put 'home' first, I knew in that little one-line poem that that's where his heart lay. The organisers expected around 150,000 to attend, but more than four times that arrived on the island. The Guinness Book of Records estimated the total attendance was between 600,000 and 700,000, more than attended Woodstock the previous year. Jimi Hendrix, who died a few weeks after the festival, was the star attraction on the bill. He was joined on stage by artists such as the Doors, the Who, Miles Davis, Leonard Cohen, Rory Gallagher and Joni Mitchell. Ralph McTell, who performed on the main stage on the festival's fifth and final day, wore his lucky shirt – a red tennis shirt he traded in Milan in 1965 for a set of strings – for the gig. 'I was living out in Cornwall in an old battered caravan in a field when this gig came in,' says McTell. 'I no idea what I was walking into. I just turned up with the guitar. My manager arranged it all. He was in London. We met and went to the place. I could feel the atmosphere, an excitement like nothing I'd ever felt before, like the atmosphere at a boxing match – where there's a lot of energy flying about, not just from the ring, but from the people who go. 'I felt that with the people that were there. It was our festival. It was the end of something, rather than the beginning – it was the end of the dream because we all thought music and poetry was the way the world was going, but reality bit at the festival when some mob pushed the fences down and they declared it a free festival. My manager panicked, so I never got to see Jimi Hendrix. 'Kris Kristofferson was on before me. When I walked out on stage it was ridiculous – I had a stool and two microphones. I did a 45-minute set. "I don't remember anything about it except I got an encore and I couldn't get out to play it. Looking back, it was an important moment for me. I'm one of the festival's survivors.
