NOIF Denies Abnormal Phenomena in Mediterranean
The National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF) confirmed that it didn't monitor any seismic activity or abnormal phenomena in the Mediterranean Sea, completely denying any indicators that may raise concern.
This came in an official statement by the Institute on Tuesday, amid the circulation of controversial videos and information on social media regarding the possibility of unusual activity in the Mediterranean Basin.
Dr. Abeer Mounir, Director of the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Alexandria, stated that the institute has not recorded any unusual activity so far.
She emphasized that the current geological status of the Mediterranean Sea is completely stable and there are no signs indicating earthquakes or tsunamis.
Dr. Amr Zakaria Hamouda, Head of the Marine Risk Reduction Center at the Institute and Chairman of the International Expert Committee on Tsunami Risk Reduction, denied the credibility of a widely shared video showing a young man in a ship's control room, which some interpreted as a sign of concerning underwater activity.
Hamouda explained that the circulated footage lacks any scientific significance, noting that the equipment shown in the video was not operational at the time of recording and did not display any data or technical signals pointing to unusual changes in wave activity or water levels.
He affirmed that the circulating claims are inaccurate and based on scientifically unsupported assumptions.
Hamouda confirmed that the observed limited changes in water direction are natural and result from ocean currents driven by high atmospheric pressure.
These are routine, seasonal phenomena with no connection to seismic activity.

Egypt condemns Israeli Minister's statements over occupied West Bank annexation - Foreign Affairs
Egypt strongly condemned on Wednesday the recent statements made by Israeli officials advocating for the annexation of the occupied West Bank, including the latest remarks by the Israeli Minister of Justice. 'Egypt categorically rejects these declarations, which are in clear violation of international law and represent a dangerous attempt to entrench an illegal occupation of Palestinian territories,' said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in a statement on Wednesday. Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin declared that 'the time has come' to annexe the West Bank during a meeting with settler leader Yossi Dagan. 'I believe that this period—regardless of current issues—is a historic opportunity that must not be missed,' a report by The Times of Israel on Wednesday quoted Levin as he referred to the annexation of disputed territories. In a statement issued by Dagan's office, accompanied by a released video, Levin told him: 'It is time for sovereignty, time to implement it. My stance on this matter is firm and clear.' He further emphasised that the issue should be 'at the top of the priority list.' The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that such statements undermined the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and jeopardised the prospects for determining their destiny and establishing an independent state along the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. They also threaten the regional unity of the Palestinian territories, including the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, it added. Egypt also reaffirmed its rejection of ongoing Israeli violations in the West Bank, including military raids, arbitrary arrests, and settlement expansion. 'These actions not only breach international law but also coincide with ongoing crimes in the Gaza Strip, aiming to dismantle all aspects of life for the Palestinian people,' the statement read. Egypt called on the international community to intervene immediately to put an end to these grave violations and halt the systematic annexation of Palestinian land. It also urged the international community to take responsible action in fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people, chief among them the establishment of an independent state on the entirety of their national territory. Syria state media says talk of peace deal with Israel 'premature' - Region
Syrian state media reported Wednesday that statements on signing a peace deal with Israel were "premature", days after Israel said it was interested in striking a normalisation agreement with Damascus. "Statements concerning signing a peace agreement with the Israeli occupation at this time are considered premature," state TV reported an unidentified official source as saying. "It is not possible to talk of the possibility of negotiations over a new agreement unless the occupation fully adheres to the 1974 disengagement agreement and withdraws from the areas it has penetrated," it added. On Monday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said his country had an "interest in adding countries, Syria and Lebanon, our neighbours, to the circle of peace and normalisation while safeguarding Israel's essential and security interests". The statement came amid major shifts in the region's power dynamics, including the fall of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December and the weakening of his ally Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, after its latest war with Israel. Syria's new Islamist authorities have confirmed they held indirect talks with Israel to reduce tensions. Since Assad's ouster, Israel has repeatedly bombed targets inside Syria while Israeli troops have entered the UN-patrolled buffer zone along the 1974 armistice line on the Golan Heights and carried out incursions deeper into southern Syria. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has repeatedly said Damascus does not seek conflict with its neighbours, asking the international community to pressure Israel into stopping its attacks. Syria has said that the goal of ongoing negotiations is the reimplementation of the 1974 armistice between the two countries. Saar insisted that the Golan Heights, much of which Israel seized in 1967 and later annexed in a move not recognised by the United Nations, "will remain part of the State of Israel" under any future peace agreement. Mohamed Mandour Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit strongly condemned remarks by Israel's Justice Minister calling for the annexation of the occupied West Bank, describing them as 'dangerous and irresponsible.' In a statement, Aboul Gheit said the statements made by a senior Israeli official reflect alarming intentions that the Arab League is closely monitoring.
