Brewers hit 3 HRs in 8-4 win over Cubs, take top spot in NL Central

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Andrew Vaughn, Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich homered and the Milwaukee Brewers overcame a shaky start from All-Star Jacob Misiorowski to beat the Chicago Cubs 8-4 on Monday night and take sole possession of first place in the NL Central.
After allowing a bloop single and walk to begin the game, Misiorowski took a line shot off the bat of Seiya Suzuki to his left knee. The 23-year-old rookie struck out Pete Crow-Armstrong but threw a wild pitch in the process, allowing a run to score. Then, after fielding a dribbler in front of the mound, Misiorowski threw wildly to first as two runners scored.
The Brewers stormed back with four runs off Matthew Boyd (11-4) in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Christian Yelich had an RBI double, Isaac Collins a two-run single and Brice Turang a sacrifice fly.
Vaughn hit a solo homer in the fifth and Frelick hit another in the sixth to give the Brewers a 6-3 lead.
After Kyle Tucker's run-scoring single in the seventh cut the margin to 6-4, Yelich hit a two-run shot to give the Brewers a four-run cushion.
Misiorowski gave up three hits and three runs in four innings. He walked two and struck out seven while throwing 11 pitches of 100 mph or more.
Trevor Megill got the last out with two runners on to notch his 24th save in 27 tries.
As Nico Hoerner scored on Tucker's single in the seventh, Michael Busch attempted take third but was cut down by Chourio's throw to third baseman Caleb Durbin. Suzuki then struck out to end the inning, stranding Tucker at second.

Seven LSU football players earn preseason All-SEC honors at media days

Seven LSU football players made the AP's preseason All-SEC team, announced Friday. Whit Weeks leads the pack as a first-teamer. Garrett Nussmeier, Caden Durham, Aaron Anderson, Harold Perkins, Barion Brown and Zavion Thomas all earned second-team honors. Weeks led the team with 125 tackles, adding in 10 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He's poised for another strong season following a lower-body injury in the Kinder's Texas Bowl. Heading into his second season starting at quarterback, Nussmeier is gunning for the program's all-time passing mark, which currently stands at 9,115. Last year, he threw for 4,052 yards with 29 touchdowns. Durham is coming off an All-SEC freshman season. He picked up 1,013 total yards and averaged 9.3 yards per carry. Despite dealing with a lingering toe injury, he developed into a versatile weapon. As a sophomore, he'll be the Tigers' feature back to balance out an improved passing game. Anderson made the cut as a wide receiver. He returns as a veteran presence in Baton Rouge amongst a host of transfers and freshmen. The redshirt junior made 61 catches for 884 yards in 2024. Following an injury-plagued 2024, Perkins returns to lead a retooled defense alongside Weeks. The linebacker made 17 tackles through four games last year before sitting out. He'll bounce between linebacker and the STAR position in defensive coordinator Blake Baker's scheme in 2025. Brown and Thomas appeared on the team as return specialists. They'll look to take up important roles on the offense as receivers as well, but both are apart of LSU's renewed focus on special teams success. England's Euro 2025 champions given a heroes' welcome with some surprise guests getting involved

Thousands of fans came out to celebrate England's back-to-back Women's European Champions in London on Tuesday as coach Sarina Wiegman and her players were given a homecoming to remember. Led by a marching band along the iconic Mall and later serenaded on stage by music stars Burna Boy and Heather Small, England's players and staff partied in front of Buckingham Palace. 'I was crying all the way down The Mall. This is unbelievable. This is probably one of the best things we've ever been a part of,' said captain Leah Williamson, fighting back more tears. England made history by becoming the country's first national soccer team across the men's and women's game to win a tournament on foreign soil with the penalty shootout victory against world champion Spain in Basel on Sunday. Arriving on two open-top buses with 'Champions' emblazoned on them, the players waved to the fans who, wearing face paint and waving flags, had lined the streets to welcome their heroes. 'We didn't really know what to expect coming into it today, but everyone was so excited on the bus and it was so nice to come back to England and celebrate with our fans,' said Alessia Russo, who scored England's equalizing goal in the final, which ended 1-1 after extra time. 'It's just a bit surreal. It's crazy to see this many people come out in the home of England, in London, heading up to Buckingham Palace, I'd never have dreamt of anything like it.' The central band of the Royal Air Force got the atmosphere going — playing England soccer anthems 'Three Lions' and 'Sweet Caroline.' There was more music on stage with a special surprise for Wiegman, who is a fan of Burna Boy. The Nigerian Afro-fusion star joined her to sing his hit song 'For my Hand,' with Wiegman dancing along and joining in. The Dutch coach completed a three-peat of Euros titles, having previously won with her native Netherlands in 2017 and England in 2022. She has a remarkable record of reaching the final of her last five major tournaments as coach of the Netherlands and England. 'I hoped for a little less chaos,' she said of the her latest triumph, which featured comebacks from England in each of the knockout rounds through to the final. 'They just showed up when it was really necessary.' Heather Small was next on stage to sing 'Proud' with England's players joining in again before lifting the trophy in front of the thousands of fans who had gathered, with fireworks filling the sky. For Williamson, triumph was another benchmark as she became the first England captain to lift two major trophies. 'Obviously we do it for us and our team, but we do it for the country and for young girls. This job never existed 30, 40 years ago and we are making history every single step,' she said. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:
