KFC's social teasers about the Kentucky Town menu quickly went viral, and they caught the attention of Tyshon Lawrence, whose TikTok following tops 19 million. Now the 27-year-old will join the former Kentucky Town 'mayor', DJ and designer Mateki2Shoes, on a Kentucky Town roadshow in and around South Ah from 6–8 August.
'South Ah's the home of Kentucky Town, and this menu takes it to a different level. We can't wait to show Tyshon and KFC fans that there are no limits where Kentucky Town is concerned. South Africa is well known for starting trends that break the internet – things like viral dance moves and amapiano – and we fully expect the world to go just as crazy for Kentucky Town as our local fans,' said KFC Africa Chief Marketing and Digital Officer Grant Macpherson.
'Since then, it's been to Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Bloem – and it's even been exported to Namibia, Thailand and Mauritius – but this Kentucky Town will be the biggest yet.'

Kentucky Town has become a phenomenon since the first one in Joburg at the end of 2021.

KFC has partnered with Six Gun Grill spice and Doritos to take the Kentucky Town taste outside the lines. 'The Six Gun Grill Zinger Braai Burger with its blackened bun is one of the heroes of the menu. In his TikTok videos, Tyshon loves to explore local cultures, so we're looking forward to hearing what he makes of this crazy combination of braais and a legendary South African seasoning. Who says you can't braai without a grill? The Doritos Cheezy Nacho Burger and Doritos Cheezy Loaded Fries have an amazing flavour (Doritos can definitely be a topping!), and the Hot Honey Dunked Wings is a sweet-meets-spicy taste explosion – it's like a party in your mouth. The Jalapeno Blaze Double Down, where chicken replaces the burger bun, doubles down on the bunless heat, and the drinks – Chilli Choc Krusher and Cherry Boba Bliss – are so hot they're cool,' said Macpherson.
Macpherson added that Tyshon heard about Kentucky Town when he saw the KFC teaser on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. 'He posted a reaction the following day, saying he'd love to taste the menu, and Mateki replied with an invitation. Before we knew it, he was on the plane.'
Tyshon and 2Shoes will be tasting the Kentucky Town menu at the Van Der Hoff KFC store in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, in Hartbeespoort, Sediba Mall KFC on Thursday and at the Fourways Crossing KFC in Joburg on Friday.
'This is a great chance for Kentucky Town fans to meet a food super-influencer and get as excited about the new taste on the menu as he is. But most of all we want to hear from South African KFC fans about what they love – and what will keep them coming back for more,' Macpherson concluded.

Durban North couple to represent SA at international dance championships
WHAT began as choreographed dance lessons leading up to their special day has turned into a 26-year dance odyssey, taking Durban couple Mark and Edlena, from local halls to some of the most prestigious ballrooms in the world; and soon, to Tokyo for the World Championships. Also read: Book fair in uMhlanga grows from grassroots to global stage 'He (Mark) didn't want to 'just shuffle about the dancefloor'. Two years later our teacher entered us into a competition. Mark refused at first, but I persuaded him,' said Edlena. To their surprise, they waltzed away with first place and two tiny silver trophies. The bug had bitten and there was no turning back. From then on, they practised more, took extra lessons, and poured their energy into their sport. Edlena even danced through all three of her pregnancies, stopping only briefly and returning to the studio with a pram in tow. Their three sons grew up surrounded by music, culture, and the disciplined artistry of ballroom. The couple has since competed at the legendary Blackpool British Open Championships five times and proudly represented South Africa in Canada, Belgium, and Spain. This year marks a new chapter: after turning professional in December 2024, under the guidance of coach Daryl Bennewith, they qualified to represent South Africa at the World Championships in Tokyo in October. 'It's the opportunity of a lifetime to compete against the very best in the world. We're proud to represent all the federations that have supported us, especially SADF. This is a career highlight,' said Edlena. As self-funded athletes, every trip, costume, and entry fee comes from their own pockets. Mark runs his architectural business, and Edlena owns a beauty salon — both working extra hours to cover the costs of international competition. 'It takes resilience to keep going while maintaining a household but it's worth it. Ballroom requires discipline, respect, and patience,' she said. 'It's taken us around the world and brought lifelong friends into our lives. Our sons have always been our biggest supporters. We're a creative, cultural family. 'Dance is a stress release and lifts your spirits. It's never too early or too late to start. Motion is lotion! Commit to a style you enjoy, and keep going,' she advises aspiring dancers. As they prepare for Tokyo, the couple is calling on the community for support through social media shares, or cheering them on from afar. 'Every bit of backing means the world to us. We'll carry the South African flag with pride.' For more from Northglen News, follow us on Facebook, X or Instagram. You can also check out our videos on our YouTube channel or follow us on TikTok. Remember CDs? Pros and cons of the new era of streaming platforms and AI music
Despite the abundance of music streaming platforms, Spotify still stands out from the rest, according to Zondi. "Most people use Android devices, and Spotify works seamlessly with Android," Zondi explains. He adds that Spotify's reach extends into areas often underserved by other platforms. "Spotify also goes into the deep South," offering a broader selection of music beyond the Western mainstream. This support for diverse genres has helped emerging styles, like Amapiano, break into the global spotlight. 'Amapiano gained mainstream popularity thanks to the exposure it got through streaming platforms,' Zondi notes. With the rise of AI-generated music and uncertainty around how it will be regulated, it's becoming harder to tell whether a song was made by a human or AI, says Zondi. Different platforms are already introducing their own rules regarding AI music. Zondi acknowledges that this new era of music presents both opportunities and challenges for artists. For up-and-coming musicians, streaming platforms offer a fast track to recognition, international exposure, and new audiences. However, legacy artists may not see the same financial benefits from streaming, Zondi points out. Still, older music sometimes finds new life on these platforms. For instance, Connie Francis's Pretty Little Baby , originally released in 1962, trended on TikTok this year, bringing renewed attention to the classic. Scroll up to the audio player for more.
