"We would welcome holding of inclusive elections": India on Bangladesh
Responding to a query on Bangladesh general elections after former Bangladesh PM, Sheikh Hasina, was ousted in a student-led uprising in August last year, Ministry of External Affairs ofiicial spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in weekly media briefing said, "You know our point of view. We have said that as a democracy we would welcome holding of elections, that is inclusive and includes everybody in its fold."
This comes after the recent agreement between the Chief Executive and a major political party on holding early elections and India welcomes such efforts to strengthen democracy in Bangladesh.
Earlier in July, Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus directed the law-enforcing agencies to complete all preparations by December for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Around 8 lakh law enforcement members will be engaged, and they will further be trained before the election, reports United News of Bangladesh (UNB).
The Chief Adviser instructed to take preparation for bringing some 16,000 vulnerable polling stations throughout the country under CCTV monitoring network to ensure peaceful balloting in the upcoming national election.
The measures that are being considered also include installation of cameras on the body of police members in the vulnerable polling stations, he added.
Besides, this time the members of police and other forces will be deployed for seven days instead of the tradition of five days during the election in a bid to resist any sort of violence ahead of the vote and prevent the deterioration of law and order after the vote, said the press secretary.
Jaiswal also stated that India follows developments in Bangladesh closely and takes cognizance of incidents like the recent violence in Gopalganj. The situation in Bangladesh is being monitored, and India will take action if required, he said.
"We want a positive and constructive partnership with the country. We have had engagements at the leaders' level. We also had Foreign Secretary visiting Bangladesh. We have had meetings between our External Affairs Minister and his counterpart, and you know there are several areas of cooperation between the two countries that are ongoing including development partnership. So, that is the context in which you must look at how we want to approach India-Bangladesh ties," said the MEA spokesperson.
At least four people were killed and dozens injured in violent clashes between law enforcement personnel and Awami League (AL) supporters in Gopalganj on Wednesday, following tensions over a rally by the National Citizen Party (NCP).
The clashes were triggered after the violence broke out in the wake of a pre-scheduled NCP rally at Poura Park in Gopalganj town, which was opposed by AL supporters despite a recent government ban on all political activities of the Awami League.
The Interim Government of Bangladesh has established a committee to investigate the acts of violence and deaths that occurred in Gopalganj on July 16, the Chief Adviser's press wing said in a statement on Thursday.
The committee will be chaired by Nasimul Ghani, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs. He will be joined by two additional secretaries, one from the Ministry of Public Administration and another from the Ministry of Law and Justice, it added.
This committee has been mandated to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit its findings to the Chief Adviser's Office within two weeks, the statement said.
India and Bangladesh have several areas of cooperation, including development projects. India's High Impact Development Projects (HIDPs) in Bangladesh aim to enhance bilateral relations and promote economic development.
On the issue of the upcoming first anniversary of the interim government of Bangladesh led by Muhammad Yunus, and on being asked about an update on India's High Impact Development Program in Bangladesh, Jaiswal said, "We want a positive and constructive partnership with the country. "
He highlighted the several engagements which the neighbours have had in recent times.
Jaiswal also spoke on Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry issuing a press release regarding Satyajit Ray's ancestral house, which India has taken note of.
"We follow all developments in our region closely and take cognizance of what is happening there, and accordingly we take action if required on our side. Regarding Satyajit Ray's building, yes, we have seen a press release issued by the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry," said Jaiswal.
Earlier on Thursday, Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had issued a statement and posted on X, "Detailed inquiry into archive/records in #Bangladesh reconfirm: the building being demolished in #Mymensingh district has no historical/familial link to iconic Bengali filmmaker #Satyajit Ray or his ancestors."

The Indian government expressed regret on Tuesday over the reported demolition of the ancestral property of celebrated filmmaker and writer Satyajit Ray in Mymensingh, Bangladesh and expressed its willingness to extend cooperation in its restoration.
"We note with profound regret that the ancestral property of noted filmmaker and litterateur Satyajit Ray in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, belonging to his grandfather and eminent litterateur, Upendra Kishor Ray Chowdhury, is being demolished," the Ministry of External Affairs said.
"The Government of India is willing to cooperate with the Government of Bangladesh for the repair and reconstruction of the ancestral property of Satyajit Ray," MEA added.
India had emphasised the significance of the property as a cultural landmark and urged reconsideration of the demolition plan.
Jaiswal also mentioned that India is issuing medical visas to Bangladeshi citizens, but did not provide exact numbers. India has a well-established system for issuing medical visas, and the process is streamlined to facilitate travel for medical treatment.
"With Bangladesh, we have been issuing visas to Bangladesh for various reasons, for various travels, medical emergency included, students, so on and so forth. We are issuing substantial visas. Exact number... on that, I will have to come back to you," said Jaiswal.

India to gain from FTA with UK, 99% Indian exports to benefit from zero duty
New Delhi: Two months after India and United Kingdom concluded Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the two countries are poised to sign the mutually beneficial landmark trade pact during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to UK beginning on Wednesday. Ahead of PM Modi's visit, the Union Cabinet approved the FTA on Tuesday. The deal, called the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CEPA), is set to be signed on Thursday in presence of PM Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will also be in London for the crucial trade deal. India and UK had announced the conclusion of agreement on May 6 and the full text of the deal was held back pending final legal review. The idea behind the trade deal is to eliminate or reduce tariffs on imports and exports between the two nations. This should make Indian products competitive in the UK and vice versa. Both nations desire to increase their trade to USD 120 billion by 2030. As announced earlier, India is set to benefit from the elimination or reduction of tariffs on about 99 per cent of its exports to the UK post the FTA. The FTA is expected to boost key sectors such as textiles, leather, footwear, sports goods and toys, marine products, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, auto parts and engines, and organic chemicals. "The FTA ensures comprehensive market access for goods, across all sectors, covering all of India's export interests. India will gain from tariff elimination on about 99% of the tariff lines covering almost 100% of the trade value offering huge opportunities for increase in the bilateral trade between India and the UK," Commerce and Industry Ministry had said in its release on May 6. . India, in turn, will reduce tariffs on 90 per cent of its imports from UK (tariff lines) in phases, with 64 per cent seeing an immediate cut. The British food and drinks sector will be among the immediate beneficiaries of the trade deal. Nearly 90 per cent of UK exports in this category are Scotch whisky, which currently faces a 150 per cent tariff. Under the new agreement, tariffs on whisky and gin will initially drop to 75 per cent, and further to 40 per cent over a period of ten years. The agreement also includes commitments on services, covering IT/ITeS, financial and professional services (including architecture and engineering), as well as educational services. It will simplify mobility for Indian professionals and provide a three-year exemption from social security contributions in the UK for temporary Indian workers and their employers. Social security contributions post FTA will be paid in India, rather than in both places. Automotive tariffs is set to be cut from over 100 per cent to 10 per cent under a tariff rate quota system. This could pose a significant challenge to the Indian automobile sector and run counter to the 'Make in India' initiative. The UK government announced on May 6, 2025 that the country had concluded a free trade agreement (FTA) with India describing it as a "huge economic win for the UK" and a "landmark trade deal". It emphasised the potential of the Indian market with its economy expected to be the third largest in the world by 2028. Some issues like details of auto quotas and carbon border taxes are still to be revealed. Politico earlier reported that the latter is being dealt with outside the trade deal in separate, ongoing negotiations. In addition, negotiations on a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) are ongoing. In his departure statement, PM Modi said that India and UK share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that has witnessed significant progress in recent years. "Our collaboration spans a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health and people-to-people ties," he said. PM Modi said that during his meeting with the UK Prime Minister, they will have the opportunity to further enhance our economic partnership, aimed at fostering prosperity, growth and jobs creation in both countries.

Male: Former Foreign Minister of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, noted that India has always been the first responder to Maldives because Indians have a generous heart. Shahid, while talking about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Maldives on July 25-26, said that the rise in aid from India shows its maturity and generosity. Shahid added that the PM's visit went beyond symbolism as it was taking place on the 60th anniversary of their independence. The visit also acknowledged that the narrative that the government was promoting was untrue. "The hate that was being mongered by the current government accusing our best friend India of such unnecessary things led to this diplomatic strain. It is so important that the PM be here with us as the Guest of Honour during our celebrations of our independence day which is the public recognition by the current administration that what they had been saying and what they had been promoting is not true. So, the Maldivian people are delighted and we are very much looking forward to welcome the PM," he said.

Indian medical team arrive in Dhaka to treat plane crash victims: MEA
New Delh i: Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal on late Wednesday night announced that a team of two Indian specialists and a nursing assistant landed in Dhaka to help with the treatment of the victims of the plane crash tragedy of July 21 in Dhaka. The team is scheduled to begin with their work from Thursday, which mirrors Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to assist the region as the tragedy struck. In a post on X, Jaiswal said, "This evening (July 23), a team of two Indian specialists and a nursing assistant from two of India's topmost burn injury treatment hospitals -- Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi -- landed in Dhaka to help with the treatment of the victims of the plane crash tragedy of 21 July in Dhaka. They will begin their work at a designated hospital treating these patients from tomorrow morning. Their visit follows PM Narendra Modi's assurance to extend all possible assistance and support to Bangladesh in the wake of the tragedy." The team arrived in Dhaka to provide support for burn victims of the recent fighter jet crash in the Diabari area of Bangladesh's capital. "The medical team has landed", an official of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka told ANI. "Doctors have come from the top burn treatment specialized hospitals in India - Ram Monohar Lohia Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi," he added. According to the Bangladesh Chief Adviser's Press Wing, the death toll in the crash incident has risen to 29, and 69 people were injured. Most of the students were admitted to various hospitals in the capital, Dhaka. Among the injured were teachers, school staff, firefighters, police officers, army personnel, and civilians, including domestic workers and electricians Death toll may rise again, as among the injured, 25 patients have serious conditions with burn injury, a doctor said. On July 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed condolences at the loss of lives in the tragic air crash in Dhaka and had conveyed assurances of support and assistance.
