The Bulldogs throttled Clemson in the opener to exhibit why they were the No. 1 team in the country to begin the season. However, the flaws of this Georgia team were on full display in the first half of a 41-34 loss at Alabama in Week 5. Yes, Georgia made a valiant effort to come back and almost win, but the Bulldogs' offense simply wasn't as good as it needed to be in key moments.
Georgia got a big 30-15 win over Texas in October, but scored just 10 points in a loss at Ole Miss. The Bulldogs again beat the Longhorns in the SEC championship game, but scored 10 points in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame and went one-and-done in the College Football Playoff.
The quarterback
Gunner Stockton
Stockton got an early introduction as Georgia's starting QB. He was forced to enter the SEC title game in the second half after Carson Beck suffered what turned out to be a season-ending elbow injury on the final play of the first half. Stockton started the Sugar Bowl and wasn't overwhelmed; he was 20-of-32 passing for 234 yards and a TD.
'The one thing that I really appreciate about Gunner and most quarterbacks is he prepared every game as if he was the starter,' Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said.
'People can say that and say that's coach-speak, but he actually did it. He went in, watched extra tape, and he knew that at any point in time, he could be called up to go into the game and play. And he didn't play in a normal environment where you've got a big lead, maybe you're beating an opponent. [Against Texas] he went in against a top defense in the country in one of the biggest games of the season and performed well for a guy that had not gotten a lot of reps with the ones.'
He got a full spring's worth of reps as the starter in the offseason and enters 2025 as the undisputed No. 1 QB.
'I think going through spring was a big deal and just having that time because it was about a month straight of work and practice, just getting a lot of banked reps,' Stockton said. 'And having this offseason, throwing 7-on-7 and working out almost every day and spending a lot of time together has helped a lot.'
Non-QB to watch
WR Zachariah Branch
Beck's struggles in 2024 after a breakout 2023 season drew a lot of headlines. But there were multiple reasons for his increase in interceptions as Georgia searched for reliable targets after the departures of Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey to the NFL.
Dominic Lovett was Georgia's leading receiver but he averaged just over 10 yards a catch. Arian Smith was the team's deep threat, but he was inconsistent. Running back Trevor Etienne had the fourth-most catches on the team and he averaged just 6 yards a reception.
Georgia and Smart made the receiving group a priority in the transfer portal. Branch arrives from USC along with Texas A&M wide receiver Noah Thomas. Former Miami wide receiver Colbie Young will be in his second season at Georgia.
Branch can be a game-breaker, though Georgia needs to figure out how to use him better than USC did at times. Branch had six catches for 98 yards against Michigan and six grabs for 102 yards against Washington. He also had three catches for 10 yards against Minnesota, two for 6 yards against Penn State and two for 13 yards against UCLA.
Best position group
Defensive backs
Georgia's defense took a bit of a step back in 2024. Opposing teams averaged over 5 yards a play for the first time since 2016 and opposing QBs completed 59% of their passes for 200 yards a game.
Even though the secondary loses Malaki Starks and Dan Jackson, it has the potential to be better in 2025. Daylen Everette returns at cornerback and KJ Bolden can be the next star Georgia safety. He had 59 tackles as a freshman in 2024. The defense also added safety Zion Branch — Zachariah's brother — from USC, Miami's Jaden Harris and former UAB safety Adrian Maddox. There's a lot of depth here.
It's next man up like it typically is at Georgia across every defensive unit, and the secondary could be the best of the bunch.
Biggest game
Nov. 15 vs. Texas
Georgia gets to live the good side of the SEC's schedule rotation this season. After the conference expanded to 16 teams in 2024, the Bulldogs drew road games against Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas. Now all three of those teams come to Athens, while Georgia visits Tennessee, Auburn and Mississippi State. Those are the only three true road games Georgia plays all season. The trip to Starkville will be the Bulldogs' longest of the regular season.
We could pick from any of those three big home games, but we'll go with Texas. It's the final conference game of the season for the Bulldogs. Georgia may need a win to get into the SEC title game while everyone else in the league sweats out another conference game or two before December.
Why Georgia is No. 5
This is where years and years of recruiting prowess pay off. Georgia may not have a bunch of players on this year's team who casual fans know about. But there's a ton of talent across the roster and it's all but certain that stars will emerge over the course of the season. At SEC media days, Smart noted that over half his roster was entering their first or second year at Georgia.
The offense should be much more like it was in 2023 than 2024. Georgia averaged 92 fewer yards per game a season ago and 1.3 fewer yards per play compared to 2023. And it wasn't just the passing game that suffered, either. Injuries in the running back room took a toll as freshman Nate Frazier ended up as the team's leading rusher. He's back, and there are four new starters on the offensive line. Despite the new faces up front, the run game should improve.
Stockton should also shine at quarterback. With more playmakers on offense, he can play the role of distributor. It felt like Beck needed to force things too often in 2024. A favorable schedule should put the Bulldogs in prime position for yet another SEC title.

Dan Lanning, Oregon Suffer Troubling Loss With Former 5-Star Recruit

Dan Lanning, Oregon Suffer Troubling Loss With Former 5-Star Recruit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dan Lanning is set to enter his fourth season with the Oregon Ducks, leading the Big Ten team into the 2025 college football season. Oregon has improved each season under coach Lanning and continues to take the necessary steps to set itself up for a national title. Ducks have consistently been recruiting alongside some of the biggest names in college football, such as Alabama and Georgia, winning battles off the field. One of Lanning's biggest recruiting wins during his time at Oregon came when the Ducks landed five-star prospect Trey McNutt. McNutt, a top-rated defensive back, was set to enter his freshman season at Oregon, but his future took an unfortunate turn just weeks before the start of the season. According to On3's Pete Nakos, Trey McNutt has broken his right leg. Trey McNutt committed to the Oregon Ducks as a five-star prospect, ranked as the No. 2 safety and the No. 31 overall player in the nation, per 247Sports. McNutt chose to continue his football journey with Dan Lanning, committing to Oregon over Texas A&M, USC, Florida and other powerhouse programs in the college football landscape. He committed to Oregon in August 2024 and eventually enrolled in the Big Ten program in December 2024. The Oregon Ducks finished the last college football season with a 13-1 record. They suffered a loss to the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff after an incredible regular season. Oregon's loss came in the Rose Bowl, led by Heisman Trophy candidate and quarterback Dillon Gabriel. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

Penix ends up on bottom of pile in Falcons-Titans fight: ‘Everything happened pretty fast'

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — D.J. Williams thought Michael Penix Jr.'s teammates liked him. On Wednesday, he learned it for certain after the Atlanta Falcons quarterback was knocked to the ground during a joint practice against the Tennessee Titans, setting off a large fight that took several minutes to disentangle. Advertisement 'Obviously, you don't want that,' Williams, Atlanta's quarterbacks coach, said, 'but I take some positives out of it because you saw the guys take up for him. That speaks to his leadership and who he is in that locker room. As coaches, we're upstairs — they're downstairs. We don't really see a lot, but obviously he has a relationship with the guys.' The part that Williams didn't like was seeing his starting quarterback at the bottom of a pile of players surrounded by grappling teammates. After practice, Penix still wasn't sure how he ended up at the bottom of that pile. He did know what started the fight, though. 'I threw a deep pass. They had (said) a lot of words throughout practice, so I gave my words,' he said. 'It just went a little too far. Celebration. Somebody didn't like it, and it went on from there. Everything happened pretty fast. Penix's trash talk came after a long touchdown pass to Ray-Ray McCloud. His words were a response, he said, to comments from Titans defenders that he felt went too far. Elevating 📈@themikepenix x @RMIII_34 — Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) August 13, 2025 'I don't really do too much talking till somebody says something to me,' Penix continued. 'They probably looked at me like, '(He's) just a quarterback, not that type of person,' but … I'm from Tampa. It's a respect (thing). We are all competing, but when disrespect comes in, it's like, 'This ain't football no more.' We can talk trash, but I'll never call you out on your name, and I don't want you to ever call me out on my name.' All of Atlanta's offensive linemen came to Penix's aid, and right guard Matthew Bergeron had to be pulled from the middle of the pile as every coach on the field blew his whistle over and over. Penix, tight end Kyle Pitts and wide receiver Drake London had to be restrained by teammates and coaches, and it eventually took several blasts of an airhorn to get everyone's attention. Titans Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons had his helmet ripped off in the fracas. Advertisement 'I've never had that situation on the field before,' Penix said. 'To see the team have my back … it was good to know that those guys have my back.' Penix generally is one of the more mild-mannered players on Atlanta's roster, and Williams was surprised to see him get so angry. 'He's a calm guy, but when you see him fiery, it gets the offense going a little bit,' Williams said. 'He started off as a running back, so he always says, 'D.J, I'm a football player first.' I say, 'I understand that, but you're a quarterback now and this is an economic game.'' 'That wasn't me,' Penix quipped. 'That was somebody else.' Michael Penix Jr. on the fight that broke out . He says he doesn't really remember what happened. He said he threw a deep ball and was celebrating, then a fight broke out. — Alison Mastrangelo (@AlisonWSB) August 13, 2025 Falcons right tackle Kaleb McGary and Titans outside linebacker Oluwafemi Oladejo had to be separated two snaps later. Wednesday was the second day of joint practices between the Falcons and Titans. Tuesday went smoothly, but Wednesday was chippy from the start. Former Atlanta wide receiver Calvin Ridley got in a scuffle during a special teams rep before the big fight and had to be calmed down by Falcons coach Raheem Morris, who remains close to Ridley. After the major melee, a special teams session sparked another fight, and Falcons wide receiver Casey Washington had his helmet ripped off and tossed away by a Tennessee player. 'Emotions get high. It's hot out here,' Williams said. 'We've got a bunch of guys fighting for their lives.' Wednesday's scuffle probably reinforced Morris' decision to hold Penix out of preseason games this year. 'My philosophy with the quarterback is definitely to mitigate the amount of hits they take that are unnecessary. Preseason hits for a quarterback are unnecessary,' Morris said before practice. 'Mike knows how to get tackled. I'm good with that. I don't need to see it until there is money on the line.' Advertisement Missing preseason games won't impact Penix's readiness for the Sept. 8 season-opener against Tampa Bay, the quarterback said. 'I don't think it'll affect my preparation at all,' he said. 'I'm always going to be ready. That's my job, to be ready. In college, you didn't have a preseason. Playing in preseason, will it help me in certain aspects of the game? Maybe. Maybe not. We don't really know. The only difference about me not playing preseason is I am not taking hits.' 'It's a mental thing': Alabama football LB Deontae Lawson talks mental recovery from ACL injury

Looking at Deontae Lawson's path back to the middle of Alabama football's defense, Kane Wommack really can't ask for much better. Lawson, a fifth-year linebacker out of Mobile, has "taken his game and leadership to another level," Wommack said, something Lawson's been able to do while battling his recovery process from a 2024 season-ending ACL injury remaining "ahead of every marker that we've had for him." "To be able to come out in fall camp, and we thought maybe we would limit some of his loads and all that," Wommack said. "We've really pushed him and he's handled it really well." Lawson's trick? To not think too much. Lawson said he's basically had the same load and the same routine throughout fall camp. As Alabama's opener against Florida State nears, he said he will "obviously do more reps to get ready," but that all he's worried about is "staying as fresh as I can and just trying to manage my load as much as I can." To Lawson, it's not about the knee and recovery alone. "It's a mental thing," Lawson said. "I just got to trust myself. That just takes time." Lawson had 76 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss and two sacks in 2024, adding four pass deflections. Against Oklahoma in November, he tore his ACL as he tried to chase down and tackle Sooners quarterback Jackson Arnold, who planted his foot to cut inside. As Lawson takes reps with the Alabama linebackers in fall practice, he's "just rolling." And Lawson's mindset toward his knee is "definitely getting better." "I'm not thinking about anything too much," Lawson said. "It's definitely a challenge, but something I definitely put to the side a little bit and just focus on what I can. And that's what I'm doing." Alabama opens the 2025 season at Florida State Aug. 30. Colin Gay covers Alabama football for The Tuscaloosa News, part of the USA TODAY Network.
