Nationwide boss Debbie Crosbie to be made a Dame in Birthday honours
Nationwide boss Debbie Crosbie said she was left 'hugely proud' of her Glaswegian upbringing after being made a Dame in the King's Birthday Honours.
Crosbie, 55, who has led Britain's biggest building society since 2022, hopes it will inspire others to follow her path.
'Lots of people talk about me being a female but I think most of my peer group have come from a much higher social demographic and they tended to be educated in either Oxford or Cambridge,' she said.
'I think having that diverse social mobility as well as gender is really important.'
Crosbie, who started at Clydesdale Bank in Scotland, said: 'I am actually hugely proud. I grew up in Glasgow, I wasn't different to any of my peer group, so to be given the opportunity to lead – I've had a massively rewarding career.
'As a woman, I hope that sends a message of opportunity and hope.'

Cumberland Council shopfront grants available once more
More than £100,000 is being made available as a scheme aimed at improving tired shopfronts Council is encouraging property owners to apply for grants to enable work it says "brings pride back" into town centres and high than 100 premises in Cumbria have been upgraded, with 11 vacant units brought back into use as a result of previous funding, according to the Labour-led leader Mark Fryer hailed those efforts as a "great success". Among the shops to have benefited is Maryport's With Love a cafe, the building, on Senhouse Street, had stood empty since the 1980s until Victoria Scott and her sister, Samantha Cartwright, opened their studio earlier this their landlord having received a grant to undertake work to the front, Mrs Scott says she is "super proud" of the way it looks."It's been beautifully done. Several people have told us how stunning it looks," he said. Sean Parnaby, chairman of the Maryport Business Group, welcomed the grant scheme's return and encouraged businesses to apply for it."It's needed in the town. Although the cost of buying a shop here is relatively low, the expense of transforming a front can quickly make bringing the property back into use unviable, so a helping hand from the council is important."Our town centre is also a conservation zone, meaning any work has to be done to the right standard."The money comes from the government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund and information about how to apply is available on the council's website. From June, the deal has been updated to Ale Monday to Wednesday, giving pubgoers an extra two days of cheap pints. The pub chain is known for its incredible deals and, alongside its Ale Monday expansion, it is planning to launch three more. The Tuesday Club, the Small Plates Deal and the Pizza Club will become available from June 23. As part of the Small Plates Deal, customers will be able to buy three items from the small plates menu for just £10. That works out as just over £3 for each small plate. At over 520 Wetherspoons locations, pubgoers will be able to access the Pizza Club deal - which will be available on Wednesdays. The promotion will mean that all pizzas will be on offer for £6.96 (with a soft drink) and £8.49 (with an alcoholic drink). As part of the Tuesday Club, shoppers can get their favourite beer and burger from Wetherspoons for just £9.99. Ahead of the wave of promotions, Wetherspoon founder and chairman Tim Martin said: 'We believe that our customers will welcome the new and existing value-for-money club deals in our pubs.' Wetherspoons previously made headlines when it announced that it was bringing back a fan-favourite burger. The hugely popular Brunch Burger will be returning for Father's Day weekend. Available from June 13 until June 15, the burger includes six ounce beef patty, American-style cheese, maple-cured bacon, free-range fried egg. The burger is topped off with a delicious hash brown.

College building plan amid construction training boom
A college is planning to build a complex for the large number of construction trainees it has enrolled. Blackpool and Fylde College said there had been a big uptake for its painting and decorating plan comes after the government unveiled £600m of funding in March to train up to 60, 000 more skilled construction Council will decide on the application later this month. A design and access statement for the application said: "The proposed scheme is to provide a new fit for purpose building to house the teaching of construction /painting and decorating skills at the Blackpool and The Fylde College, Bispham Campus."The requirement for this building is due to the high numbers of students enrolling on construction courses this academic year and the forecast for future years."Blackpool and the Fylde College intend to be integral to ensuring the training of young people across the Fylde region accordingly in support of the government targets."Existing facilities provided at the Bispham campus include engineering, construction, heating and ventilation and automotive, amongst many others, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
