Meet the 24-armed sea star, a kelp forest's bodyguard
Sea urchins appear to sense the sea star's presence–desipte not having a brain–and avoid these predators, according to a study recently published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Since multiple species of sea urchins can wreak havoc on ecologically important kelp forests, understanding how natural predator-prey relationships like this one between urchins and sea stars could be used to protect kelp.
Why kelp rocks
Kelp forests are critical to the ocean–and planet's–health. They live along most of North America's western coast. These large, brown algae grow in cool, relatively shallow coastal waters. Kelp forests contribute roughly $500 billion to the global economy every year, as kelp is a key ingredient in everything from salad dressings to certain vitamins.
Similar to forests on land, they grow in dense groups that provide food and shelter to numerous animal species, including fish (abalone, rockfish, and kelp bass), invertebrates (sea stars, urchins, and bristle worms), and marine mammal species (sea lions and otters). Many of these organisms can use the thick blades to shelter their young from predators or even storms.
About 10 years ago, sunflower sea stars went locally extinct in large parts of California and Oregon due an outbreak of wasting disease in 2013. The region's kelp forests were lost right along with the sea stars. In the years since, neither the sea stars or kelp have fully recovered and the urchins that eat the kelp have pressed on.
Natural kelp forest guardians
Previous research has found that increased sea otter populations have helped curb urchin populations around kelp forests. A group of ecologists and undergraduates at the University of California, Santa Cruz were curious to learn more about how sunflower sea stars could deter the urchins from eating kelp. To find out, they placed pairs of cages on the sea floor a few miles east of Sitka, Alaska, where resident urchins have turned once-thriving kelp beds into more barren zones. Both cages were made of plastic pipe and covered with fine mesh and kelp blades were tied to all of the cages as bait. A sunflower sea star was placed in one cage, while the other was sea star free. The two pairs of cages were about 60 to 100 feet apart.
After one day, they observed that red urchins (Mesocentrotus franciscanus) remained an average of about six feet away from the kelp tethered to the cages with sea stars inside. However, the green urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) were not so easily deterred. Even with the mixed results, they study found that the sea stars clearly deterred one type of urchin. According to the team, an increase in the presence of sunflower sea stars, either natural or artificial, may help kelp forests by deterring urchins, without requiring divers manually remove urchins.
'We show that the sea stars create a 'landscape of fear' among red sea urchins in degraded urchins barrens that reduces grazing on kelp,' study co-author and ecologist Kristy Kroeker, said in a statement. 'These are very hungry urchins that are dissuaded enough by the scent of a sea star to deter grazing on kelp forests, which is promising for thinking about their role in kelp-forest recovery.'

Prowling for purple predators?
Additional research is needed to test whether the presence of the sea stars would have a similar effect on the most destructive kelp eater in the region–the purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus). While a natural part of the ecosystem, if the population of purple sea urchins gets too high, the urchins can eat the kelp faster than they can reproduce.
'My educated guess is that they will deter purple urchin grazing as well, but it's a question of how much and for how long,' Kroeker said. 'There are many unknowns that need to be addressed and many steps that need to be taken between our results and the reintroduction of Pycnopodia for kelp-forest recovery.'
The study also highlights how undergraduate students can be a real asset in scientific research at universities.
'I feel very grateful to have had the privilege of working on this study alongside my peers. Participating in the entire process, from diving to scientific writing, was exciting and impactful as an undergraduate student,' added study co-author Rae Mancuso. 'I hope the findings from this field experiment contribute in some way to the restoration of our all-important kelp forests.'

Low-dose X-ray treatment is being used for arthritis, plantar fasciitis and other benign conditions
In March 2024, radiation oncologist Sanjay Mehta had been dealing with painful Achilles tendinitis on his left ankle for over a year. He'd tried steroid injections and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections, which Mehta said eventually did the trick. But when his right Achilles started hurting three months later, he opted for a different approach. He had recently started offering low-dose radiation therapy to treat some patients suffering from inflammatory conditions and thought: Why not try it himself? After six self-administered low-dose X-rays, covered by insurance, he found he was pain-free — and he began offering the therapy to more patients with similar noncancerous conditions. 'The main surprise was … why didn't I think of this earlier?' he said. Mehta is part of a growing trend among U.S. radiation specialists, who have begun offering low-dose X-ray therapy for benign conditions such as arthritis, plantar fasciitis, Peyronie's disease and thick raised scars, or keloids. After the American Society for Radiation Oncology discussed the use of low-dose radiation therapy for nonmalignant conditions in its spring 2024 quarterly newsletter, its use began to pick up steam, Mehta said. Unlike radiation therapy for cancer, LDRT, as its name suggests, uses low doses to suppress inflammatory cells. Mehta said six LDRT treatments expose the patient to about the same amount of radiation as in one cancer treatment or what someone might get from 'a few' CT scans. Low-dose radiation treatments almost date back to when X-rays were first discovered in 1895, Mehta said. They eventually fell out of favor in part due to new treatment options, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but also because of radiation fears, he said. Gopal Bajaj, the musculoskeletal lead for the American Society for Radiation Oncology task force on non-oncologic disease, said LDRT remained popular in Europe. The German Society for Radiation Oncology published national guidelines for its use in nonmalignant diseases in 2000. In the United States, 'it's within the last decade or so that there's been a slow reemergence of interest into exploring radiotherapy for conditions other than cancer,' Bajaj said. Bajaj first encountered it as a therapy about a decade ago when an interested patient with Dupuytren's contracture — a condition that involves thickening of the skin on the palm of the hand, often causing fingers to curl under — asked for it. He started delving into the scientific literature, which was primarily German, and decided it was worth a try. It worked, halting the progression of her condition, which Bajaj said is the goal of the treatment. Since then, Bajaj has seen around 800 people with the disease who fly in from all over the country. 'Most patients we see with Dupuytren's are actively progressing when they begin treatment, and after radiation therapy, fewer than 5 to 8 percent continue to worsen,' Bajaj said. When it comes to inflammatory conditions like osteoarthritis, tendinopathy or plantar fasciitis, Bajaj said, 60 to 80 percent of his patients report some symptom improvement. A Department of Veterans Affairs survey last year of 48 studies on the effectiveness of LDRT for a variety of conditions, some several decades old, found mixed evidence to make conclusions about its effectiveness, but it said there was no reason not to try it 'after conventional therapy fails.' Bajaj and Mehta said they believe the research is still catching up to what doctors are seeing in the clinical setting. Whenever there's trauma (from a surgery or an injury), macrophages, white blood cells that modulate inflammation, begin to secrete chemicals that promote inflammation. The X-rays suppress the macrophages, which 'stops this inflammatory cascade from taking hold and, therefore, the pain and the swelling goes away,' Mehta said. LDRT can work for injuries or conditions where there's inflammation, Mehta said, such as tendinitis, osteoarthritis and plantar fasciitis. In some cases, LDRT seems to provide immediate relief, while others can take longer. In Mehta's case, it took six to eight weeks before his Achilles felt better. A cortisone shot may work faster, he said, but judging from his and his patients' experiences, the LDRT results seem to last longer. He said it may also be more beneficial to the long-term health of the joints because cortisone shots can weaken the tendon and the fibers of the connective tissue, which can up the risk for tendon ruptures with repeated injections. There is a 'sweet spot' for LDRT, Bajaj said. If a patient's condition is too advanced, such as if their arthritis has led to a bone-on-bone (without cartilage or fluid to pad it) situation, or there's an autoimmune component to it, such as with ankylosing spondylitis, it probably won't work, he said. Not all radiation specialists are on board with low-dose X-ray treatment for benign conditions. At Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida, for instance, when Jose Penagaricano, a radiation oncologist who has been treating patients with malignant conditions for six years, started treating osteoarthritis and Dupuytren contracture about a year ago, he got some pushback from colleagues worried that LDRT would take machine time away from ill cancer patients, he said. By limiting consultations for LDRT cases, though, he said the impact has been minimal. The bigger concern that those using LDRT have heard from colleagues and patients is radiation exposure. Even low-dose exposure over a lifetime has the potential to cause a small increase in the risk of cancer, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. David Brenner, director of the Center for Radiological Research at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, said that, in general, the long-term health concerns related to radiation exposure are specific to organs that 'have a lot of dividing cells,' such as the gastrointestinal system. Hands, feet and knees — frequent sites for LDRT — would be of less concern, he said. A 2015 study in the British Journal of Radiology suggests that the risks of cancer following low-dose radiation therapy for benign disease tend to be small, especially in older patients. But because 'exposure to radiation has the potential to cause a radiation-induced cancer many years after treatment,' it may be an issue for younger adults, adolescents and children, the study said. Concerns about lifetime accumulation of radiation is why radiation doctors typically use this treatment only on patients over 40, Mehta said. 'The major thing people are worried about with radiation is radiation itself causing cancer, [but] it takes, even in higher-dose cancer patients, literally decades for a second cancer to develop,' he said. 'With these low doses of radiation that we use for arthritis and tendinitis, there's been nothing described in the literature for over a hundred years.'

As a dedicated thriller fan, I find the narrative hook ripe for shocking twists and highly memorable moments. And 'The Lazarus Project' is more proof that when used well, the narrative device creates practically unmissable TV. This British series originally aired on Sky Max in the summer of 2022 (and TNT in the U.S.), but now has found a new streaming home on Netflix. Subscribers hooked by the elevator pitch of a secret organization altering time to save the world will be pleased to know the streaming service hasn't just added a single season of the show either. Both seasons of "The Lazarus Project" have now landed on the big red streamer. At 16 episodes total, 'The Lazarus Project' is the perfect binge-watch this week. It's one of those rare shows that will have your finger hovering over the 'play next episode' button before the credits have even started rolling. With each new twist and turn, you'll be drawn further into its world of time loops, tricky moral questions and compelling characters. The show is already proving quite a hit on Netflix. Less than 48 hours after its arrival on the platform, and it's found its way into the Netflix top 10 most-watched shows list. It currently ranks No. 5 behind original series like "The Hunting Wives" and "Untamed," but as more subscribers get hooked by its many twists, it could even rise to No. 1. So, if you're on the hunt for your next Netflix binge, 'The Lazarus Project' makes a very compelling case for itself. Here's everything you need to know about this gripping sci-fi thriller series, and why critics were so impressed it managed to pull a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. What is 'The Lazarus Project' about? George (Paapa Essiedu) might be losing his grip on reality. Waking up on July 1, he lives out an eventful three months that include professional success; marrying his girlfriend, Sarah (Charly Clive); preparing for their first child; and facing a global pandemic. But then he awakens on the morning of July 1, with time having reset back to three months earlier. Stuck in a time loop, reliving the same events over and over again, nobody but George seems to be aware that time is resetting. But he's not going insane. Instead, he's one of a select group of people who can uniquely perceive the flow of time and remember the events of each timeline reset. Invited to join the Lazarus Project, he becomes part of an underground organization that works from the shadows to save the world from universe-ending threats, but the ability to rewrite the past and change the future comes with serious temptations. And George is soon forced to choose between the Lazarus Project's strict rules and saving a loved one. 'The Lazarus Project' reviews — here's why critics rate it 100% On review site Rotten Tomatoes, 'The Lazarus Project' season 1 holds a rare perfect 100% rating. This score comes from a relatively low sample size of 14 reviews, but it still speaks to the sci-fi thriller's quality and the way it managed to grip viewers across its run. 'It's all as fun to watch as it is compelling to consider,' said Judy Berman of TIME Magazine. While Cristina Escobar of praised the series for its 'thoughtful exploration of moral questions' and for packing 'plenty of suspense.' Metro's Sophie Laughton felt the show was 'a watch that's worth the ride,' and Brad Newsome of the Sydney Morning Herald said, 'This intelligent, imaginative sci-fi thriller series sets itself apart with complex, believable characters and dashes of incidental low-key humor.' "Affirming [creator] Joe Barton's status as one of the best screenwriters in the game, The Lazarus Project is exactly the kind of head-spinning, heart-pounding TV that you'll be left wanting to revisit time and again," said Jordan King of Empire Magazine in a four-star review. Dan Einav of the Financial Times was a little more mixed than some critics. 'The opening episode can feel off-puttingly clunky and déjà vu-inducing,' explained Einav. However, he noted that 'In subsequent episodes, thankfully, the eight-parter becomes more intriguing.' The show's second season, which originally debuted in November 2023, doesn't have enough reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for a rating, but the critical takes listed are universally positive. 'This twisty time-loop thriller gets even more dramatic in its second outing. Paapa Essiedu's George is a jittery joy in a smart, sharply scripted show that's lots of fun to watch,' said Leila Latif of the Guardian about 'The Lazarus Project's' second season. Should you stream 'The Lazarus Project' on Netflix? If you're looking for a compelling sci-fi series with intriguing twists and plenty of time-travel shenanigans, then 'The Lazarus Project' isn't just worthy of your watchlist — it should be right at the very top of your streaming pile. It's a compelling thriller that'll hook you instantly. Paapa Essiedu's performance is one of my favorite parts of the show, creating a character in George who is plenty likable, and with some conflicting emotions at play. Yes, he wants to save the world from global catastrophe, but he's got understandable personal desires as well, and these two goals conflict in a way that leads to seriously high-stakes drama. While much of 'The Lazarus Project' is dedicated to intense drama and universe-ending threats, there's just the right amount of humor in the mix. Like when Lazarus Project member Archie (Anjli Mohindra) explains George's abilities to him by describing him as a 'mutant,' but making a point of noting he's "not like Wolverine.' Of course, as a show about time loops and changing the past to alter the future, there is a degree of time travel jargon in 'The Lazarus Project,' and the timeline can get a bit knotty as the show progresses. But these are minor quibbles, and for the most part, 'The Lazarus Project' does a good job of keeping things flowing without the plot spinning out of control. However, before you commit to watching based on all the praise written above, there is one frustrating element I need to warn you about. Sadly, 'The Lazarus Project' was canceled after two seasons, and the season 2 finale ended on a massive cliffhanger — one that looks set to go forever unresolved. So be prepared to be left with lingering questions. This blemish aside, 'The Lazarus Project' is a must-watch series for sci-fi thriller fans, and I'm hoping it's enjoyed a deserved resurgence now that it's arrived on Netflix. In fact, maybe if it manages to make such a large splash on the world's biggest streaming service, then it could be revived for a third season. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. 'The Lazarus Project' is among the final few major additions to Netflix this month, but the streaming service has already confirmed its slate of new content for August.
