Leaving Cert and Junior Cert exams
As the Leaving Cert and Junior Cert exams begin on June 4th, we want to extend our warmest wishes to all the young people in our parish. This can be a stressful and demanding time, but remember=97you've already demonstrated great resilience, hard work, and determination to reach this point.
Do your best, take each day as it comes, and know this: your worth is not defined by exam results. These tests cannot measure your kindness, your compassion, your sense of community, or the light you bring to those around you.
To our Leaving Cert students: As you face these final school exams and begin to look toward the future, know that your community stands behind you with pride and support. You are stepping into a new chapter=97filled with opportunities, growth, and new beginnings.
Secondary Students on their holidays
We wish all second level students a safe and happy summer holiday from school. When you are out and about on the roads please be safe, and be seen. Wear your high-vis jackets and helmets when cycling. We wish the secondary school staff among us a restful and healthy summer break too.

There were many trophies brought home to the parish but it's not just about winning – having the honour of representing your school on such a big stage is a wonderful achievement in itself.

GAA club news
Colm Looney proves to be a handful against Nemo Rangers - Last Friday night in the superb facilities, that are the home grounds of Nemo Rangers, in Trabeg, Killavullen secured two more points in the Red FM county Division 7 Hurling league.
When you say superb facilities, this is another level, impressive and thriving club house, with a bar and outside seating area, three pitches with games on them simultaneously and the place heaving with people. Good to see some Killavullen names on the centenary wall in the facility as well, after some members of the Dorgan family, from Monanimy threw their lot it with this club, when they relocated to the city.
Killavullen started very cold in the game and Nemo Rangers had the opening point in the game and then the first of early goals on the board before we had got to grips with their hard pressing athletic game. That goal, scored by Ronan Dalton from that club should not happen, a player picked up the ball, on the forty, and everyone backed off and looked after their own man, allowing Ronan to advance and give Colm, deputising on our goal for the injured Charlie, in our goals no chance. Jamie got a point back for us, but then calamity again when a long delivery into their full forward line, caught us ball watching, and in a twinkle, it was nestling in our net. 2-01 to 0-01 after four minutes was not the start that we wanted.
We got another point back from a free after Darragh was fouled, and then a lifeline and a way back into the game, when Colm Looney caught a high ball, in and around their square and held off his man, and finished to the net. Nemo added a point, but Owen Magner got one back for us and gradually, we had come up to the pace of the game, on the rock hard and low cut pitch. Nemo added another point from a free, in the 13th minute but Jamie got that score back, from a dead ball situation again, against the wind. We lost Fionn Magner to an injury but where able to call on Charlie Lillis as a replacement for his first game in over 10 months after an injury sustained in our second championship game of 2024. Nemo added another free, but then we were awarded a penalty.
Colm Looney had fetched a high centre and in turning and going towards goal, he was fouled and Jamie dispatched the shot emphatically to the net. A drawn game on the 29th minute, 2-04 apiece after the slow start was an impressive come back and we took the lead with a Jamie free only for Nemo to equalise on the stroke of half time with a fine score from Shane Horgan, their impressive full forward.
After some sustenance at half time, by the viewing public and an intake of more modest fluids by the players, the second half restarted in a way similar to the first, when Ronan Dalton turned our corner back and finished with aplomb to the net. The same player fired a ball over his shoulder in the next play to push the Nemo lead out to 4 points. Colm Hannon was introduced for Cian Lane, at the interval. Now playing with the aid of the wind, Killavullen came much more into the game in and around midfield and the middle triangle between the two forties, and Jamie rattled off five frees in quick fire concession interspersed with a free back for Nemo to leave the teams on equal terms 2-10 to 3-07 by the midpoint of the second half.
Colm Looney scored another goal for us then, after fetching a clever ball in from Patrick O Grady to push us ahead again, and that was the Cathylst for an impressive run of scores when Nemo could scarcely get out of their half, and beyond our forty. Nemo were missing a decent cohort of players though, away enjoying a club wedding in Spain and players of the ilk of Barry Cripps and Jerry Kerins, especially Barry Cripps are a huge loss to any team.
Owen Magner stretched out our lead with another fine point, from a player having a stellar break out year, from minor and our lead was extended by two further points from his brother Jamie and then Darragh O Grady. Mikey O Connor added lustre to the scoreline with a fine goal in the 23rd minute. Nemo got a point back and Jamie got a point from a 65 metre shot after the alert goal keeper from Nemo had turned away a shot that would otherwise have nestled in the top corner of the Nemo net. Padraig Cronin was introduced for Seamus O Mahony, who had given his all. Nemo scored another point, but then Colm Looney used his bulk to turn his man, and apply a deft flick to a ball that he had allowed to run through, and the result was another goal for us.
Mikey O Connor, did not want his fellow fabricator to gleam all of the headlines, and scored two fine point scores in quick succession to bring our tally to 5-16 but lesson in life Mikey, Colm repaired the club house gates during the week, and was always going to get a favourable mention as a result, even though the three goals he scored, and the penalty won, meant he was always going to auspiciously called out in the report anyway.
Nemo got a goal back, that their over all spirited play deserved and then a point, but we got the final score of the game, when Colm Hannon showed a nice sidestep and fired a ball over the bar to bring our final tally to 5-17 as against 4-10 for Nemo.
Ballygown North Cork Hurling Champions - We are so proud of the Ballygown school team who won the North Cork Sciath na Scol B3 Hurling Final last week. Ballygown had a tremendous game against a very sporting and skilful Analeentha team and it took a mighty team effort to come out on top.
The win caps a great year on the playing field as Ballygown added to previous victories in the football final, the Mini Sevens Competition and the Fr. Burns Shield. In congratulating the players Ballygown school also want to thank and commend the wonderful support they had in Mallow and back at school from pupils, parents, families and staff.
A big thank you to the North Cork Schools Board committee and the volunteers who made the finals' day special for the participating schools.
Lotto - The treasurer of Killavullen GAA was only delighted last week, when there was no winner winners of the GAA lotto on Tuesday night, 27th May in the draw which took place in the Community Centre. The numbers drawn were 8, 23 and 29. The jackpot on the night was, at €1,000. The winners of the lucky dips were as follows. €50–Eva Gorea – Mary Mellerick; €30 – David Brosnan (seller – Michael Linehan); €20 – Paul Stafford (seller – Michael Linehan). Purchase your ticket from any committee member or from our website- Killavullengaa.com. Thank you for your anticipated and ongoing support.
Rebel Óg North Selections - Well done to Conor Vaughan and Fionnán Murphy who were in action on Saturday last in Ballyhooly for Rebel Og North U14 hurling teams against Tipperary North and South teams. Both players had great games. Keep up the good work boys and thanks to all who turned up to support the Killavullen boys!
Killavullen player in Primary School Game - Congratulations to Dan Hanrahan who has been selected next Saturday to play in a packed TUS Stadium in Limerick, at the half time interlude between Cork and Limerick, in the Munster Hurling Final. Well known in Killavullen as the water boy / hurley carrier and a host of other tasks in and around the adult junior hurling team, if John Kiely or Pat Ryan want any advice on the teams' selections, Dan could voice a knowledgeable opinion.
Heading up by bus next Saturday and getting dinner and a medal presentation down in Na Piarsaigh's in Limerick and walking up to the stadium and then welcoming Cork into the pitch and playing at halftime, not a bad day out for Dan. Congratulations to Dan.
Golf Classic
Good interest in been expressed in our annual Golf Classic, which is creeping up steadily upon us. Killavullen GAA Golf Classic for 2025 will be on in Doneraile Golf Club, on 13th and 14th June.
At this juncture, the club would be confident that all of the available team slots will sell out, but Golf Classics are successful or not depending, on the amount of other revenue streams, that they can bring in, from Tee and Green sponsorship.
There is also competitions, for the longest drive for men and women, and nearest the pin on the 8th hole, plus a raffle on the days; it will make for a very enjoyable occasion.
Please contact any club official, if you would like to partake, or indeed, assist the club in sponsoring of a green or Tee box.
There are a number of ways to support this event:
Enter a team of 3 People for €120; the format is Champagne Scramble and there are times available from 11am to 5pm. We also have a limited number of tee slots, on Friday afternoon. There are a number of excellent prizes for the winners and a meal is included
Sponsor a Tee Box for €100; Have your company name displayed on a tee box
Sponsor a Landing Green for €50; Have your company name displayed in and around the landing green area
If you would like to play or advertise we would be delighted to have you involved. You can revert to John O Donovan on 086-3934232 or simply reserve a slot for your team to Communications.killavullen.cork@gaa.ie

Last week's winners were Isabella Glassett and James Walsh both having the lucky bonus numbers. Congratulations and thank you to one and all for your support. GAA club news Colm Looney proves to be a handful against Nemo Rangers - Last Friday night in the superb facilities, that are the home grounds of Nemo Rangers, in Trabeg, Killavullen secured two more points in the Red FM county Division 7 Hurling league. Purchase your ticket from any committee member or from our website- Thank you for your anticipated and ongoing support. Golf Classic Good interest in been expressed in our annual Golf Classic, which is creeping up steadily upon us. Bunker Mentality: The billionaires prepping for doomsday
In his 2022 book 'Survival of the Richest' the theorist Douglas Rushkoff tells a story of being invited to talk to a group of "ultra-wealthy stakeholders", who wanted his take on the potential future impact of technology. But when he arrived at a top secret destination, it turned out that his audience was just five rich men – and they didn't want to hear the talk he'd prepared. Instead, they peppered him with numerous questions about different technologies and situations, which quickly started to hone in on their core concern - which was how best to prepare for a doomsday scenario. They wanted to know if it was better to get to New Zealand or Alaska, for example, whether he thought the risk of climate change was greater than the risk of biological warfare, and should a shelter have its own air supply, for example. And all of these very wealthy people were very worried about what they called "the event" – which was an unnamed future disaster that would upend society. And they wanted to figure out how best to protect themselves, their families, and - of course - their assets and power. Rushkoff doesn't tell us who these rich men were – but we do know that this kind of high-end doomsday prepping is not confined to just a handful of the ultra-wealthy. Separate to his experience, we do have some very public examples of other billionaires trying to safeguard themselves in a worst case scenario. That goes all the way from the Kardashians - with an episode of 'Keeping up with the Kardashians' featuring Kim and Khloé going bunker shopping – through to some of the richest people on the planet. Like who? Peter Thiel is perhaps the most interesting example – this is the multibillionaire early investor in PayPal. He's worth around $17 billion today – he's also a key backer of Donald Trump and JD Vance. But clearly he's worried that they may not be able to make America great again, because he's also developed a plan to escape to New Zealand in the event of a major disaster. He was given citizenship of the country in 2011 – despite only spending 12 days there beforehand. The rules in the country normally require people to be resident for – essentially - four out of five consecutive years before they are eligible, but his application was fast-tracked. And that was despite him being up-front in saying that he had no immediate plan to live there – though he did promise to promote the country around the world, which the government of the day felt was very valuable. He told Sam Altman – the man behind ChatGPT – about his plan to escape on his private jet to New Zealand if there was a major natural disaster or political breakdown. His original intention seems to have been to retreat to a massive, bunker-like complex that he was to build on the remote part of its South Island. According to the planning application, this was to cover around 18 acres of land and include accommodation for Thiel and guests, as well as other management and infrastructure buildings, all of which would be embedded in the hills. But the plan was rejected because of the negative impact it would have on the landscape. And Mark Zuckerberg is getting ready too… Yes, he's been constructing a large complex in Hawaii on land that he's been acquiring over the course of nearly a decade. It's a 1,400 acre compound of mansions – estimated to be costing $270m to build. And within that is a huge bunker. Now, Zuckerberg claims it's just a bunker - not a doomsday bunker. He said it's just a little shelter; essentially like a basement. Although that skirts over the fact that it is set to be 5,000 sqft in size; not what most people would describe as little. It also seems to have blast-resistant doors, an escape hatch and its own energy and food supplies. So it definitely seems to be built for more than housing a few old boxes and a pool table. What about Elon Musk? There's no specific details out there about Musk's bunkers – though you would presume he would have access to one. Most billionaires seem to, even if it's just from a personal security rather than doomsday point of view. But Musk's future-proofing plan is far more ambitious – as he's been talking for years about the need for humans to being a multiplanetary species so that it can escape whatever future disaster that's coming. As part of that his SpaceX has a plan that it says will lead to human's establishing a colony on Mars. The first step in that process will see it send uncrewed ships to the planet next year to see if they can reliably land there. If that's a success, they would look to send a crewed mission within four years of that landing, and that would start the process of building a base there. But even if they do launch those ships next year, given the time it takes to get a ship from Earth to Mars, it'll probably be 2027 by the time they know if it's a success. Then if you add four years on, which itself may be ambitious, you're talking about 2031 before a manned launch happens - and then the guts of a year before that crew lands on the planet. And assuming all of that goes to plan – which is a big if – whether it will be possible to build a colony there, and how long that will take, is anyone's guess. So based on all of that, you'd presume Musk isn't expecting doomsday to happen any time soon. Is doomsday prepping big business as a result of all of this? Absolutely – and it's an interesting shift because, just a few years ago, doomsday preppers were quite a fringe group, and generally depicted as unhinged conspiracy theorists. But now the so-called Doomsday Economy is thought to be worth billions of dollars a year. Now some of that is very much at the entry level – for example, a study by FEMA in the US estimated that 20 million Americans classed themselves as preppers, in that they had made specific preparations for a disaster. But when you live in a country that regularly has hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, earthquakes and mass shootings then being prepared for a disaster isn't necessarily a sign of you thinking the world is coming to an end – it's just common sense. And that kind of prepping might take the form of tinned and specially prepared food that has a long shelf life, back-up generators, survivalist classes and so on. But of course there are many who are genuinely preparing for some kind of societal collapse – and they're spending serious money on being ready for that. For example a New York Times journalist last year visited a compound in West Virginia called Fortitude Ranch – it's a 50 acre site which includes accommodation and bunkers, as well as food and drink supplies, and lots of weaponry to protect the inhabitants. And you can pay between $2,000 and $20,000 to join the ranch – and then a $1,000 per person fee so that, in the event of a disaster, you can retreat to the ranch to wait it out. And they're in expansion mode at the moment – they're looking to franchise out the idea so that similar compounds are build in different parts of the country. And as you move up the ladder then you can find some luxury bunkers in places in South Dakota – they cost $55,000 dollars to join up. And then you can move all the way up to the billionaire class where, if you don't want to buy up half of Hawaii or New Zealand, you can get companies like Swiss firm Oppidum to custom-make you a luxury bunker of your own, on your own property, wherever that may be. Their fit outs start at around $10m and go up to $100m, apparently. Do these ultra-wealthy people know something we don't? It would make you a bit nervous, wouldn't it? But perhaps what we're seeing from them is an extreme version of the same thing that has happened to many people since the pandemic. Everyone is more aware of the potential for unexpected disruption to their lives and their food supplies and utilities. And since then we've had so many major global events that remind us of how fragile our supply chains often are. But of course, unlike most of us, these ultra wealthy people have the money to do pretty much anything they want in order to protect themselves from that. And while spending $270m on a bunker in Hawaii is a lot of money – if you're Mark Zuckerberg, it represents a fraction of your net worth. It's not even comparable to the average person deciding to buy a small shed for their back garden. And of course there is a practical element to these people spending big money on their, and their family's, safety – because they obviously would be targets for kidnappers and criminals on a day-to-day basis, and so they need to think a lot about security outside of a world-ending disaster. But the billionaire doomsday prepping also points to a wider fragility in the mega-rich mindset – because they have more money than they'll ever need, they have huge amounts of power and influence – but despite that they are aware of how many things are outside of their control. And they're willing to throw huge amounts of money at things like this as some attempt at changing that. It's the same reason why some billionaires are so obsessed with trying to extend human's lifespan – including running countless 'bio-hacking' experiments on themselves – like getting blood transfusions from young people. Others are looking into the idea of uploading their consciousness to computers at some point in the future, while even the concept of cryogenics continues to be popular amongst some. Is there an air of futility to billionaires doomsday prepping? Well you do wonder how much use these bunkers and compounds will be to them in the event of a major global catastrophe – firstly because, no matter how prepared you are, you don't know what that disaster would be, and where or how it would impact. You would also imagine that these huge complexes would immediately become targets in the event of a societal breakdown - with the many people who didn't prepare looking for a way to get food and shelter. And this was an interesting part of the interaction that Douglas Rushkoff had with those five ultra-wealthy men. He said they were aware of the need to have armed guards to protect their bunkers –one had already lined up a dozen ex-Navy Seals to make their way to his compound once he gave the cue. But they also wondered how they could keep the guards on their side – given that, in the event of a societal collapse, their money and even their cryptocurrency assets would all be pretty much worthless. In order to stop the hired muscle simply dispatching their billionaire boss that they've been hired to protect, one of the rich men suggested they could keep the food behind combination locks as a disincentive for a revolt. Another suggested making their guards wear shock collars so they could be better controlled. Rushkoff, though, suggested to them that - rather than focusing on weapons and access to food - the best approach to ensure they stayed on your side was to make the relationship a partnership rather than a transaction. He suggested the billionaires work with their staff and start treating them like friends now in order to build loyalty and solidarity, and that would form the basis for a long term relationship where everyone looked out for each other. Though, he said, that suggestion was met with a collective eye-roll from the billionaires.

My 9-year-old spent £1K on Roblox as she didn't know it was real money – I feel sick to my stomach & can't get it back
A MUM has issued a warning after her nine-year-old daughter spent over £1,000 on Roblox - unaware she was spending real money. Emma Bell didn't realise that her PayPal account was linked to her iPad and had no idea that her daughter could spend the money so easily. Advertisement 3 Emma Bell and her daughter Bronwen, nine, who didn't realise she was spending real money Credit: SWNS 3 Roblox allows users to create their own games but also offers in-app purchases to upgrade the user's avatar Credit: SWNS 3 Emma said her daughter Bronwen, who is neurodivergent, plays on her tablet when she comes home from school Credit: SWNS In the space of three months her daughter Bronwen made 25 transactions on her Roblox account - billing up more than £1,000 in her mum's bank account. The mum-of-three, from Quakers Yard, south Wales, has warned parents to be "vigilant" as she has been unable to retrieve her money back. Roblox allows users to create their own games but also offers in-app purchases to upgrade the user's avatar with things like clothes or accessories and offers some pay-to-play games. Emma, 52, who works as a Advertisement read more on parenting "These Robux [Roblox coins] kids don't see it as money. It is coins and a gaming app. They don't connect that that is money you have got to pay for. "On Roblox when you go in to buy those coins the way the options are set up the £199 is the first option that comes up. For her she had no concept and understanding that she was clicking the most expensive option. "I was upset at myself. At that point, I held out hope but as time went on I just felt sick to the stomach and angry that such a big corporation can't understand the financial difficulty this put me in." Emma said her daughter Bronwen, who is neurodivergent, plays on her tablet when she comes home from school. Advertisement Most read in Fabulous She explained how she tries to monitor the games Bronwen downloads and they had a rule where she would ask her mum for permission before pressing anything. But what the mum didn't realise was that she had PayPal in daughter's payment method on the iPad. I'm a mum-of-5 on £1.5K Universal Credit per month - people think I'm popping kids out to get 'lots of money' but I still have to use food banks - its embarrassing Her daughter had managed to spend more than £1,000 on the site but the worst time was when she did five transactions in one day. Emma said: "PayPal takes at least a week to send it through my bank account so there had been some delays in those bills going through my bank before I realised the huge amount of fees. Advertisement "One of the things that upset me the most was in a whole day there were five transactions - one of £199, second of £99 and three for £49,99." For weeks Emma, was in back and forth contact with Apple, Roblox, PayPal and her bank trying to secure a refund but so far she has only been able to get £78 from Apple. Emma said: "She had run up a huge bill. I phoned PayPal and asked them to put a block on any charges being put through. "Then I spoke to Apple and they were helpful. I went through my Apple account, saw all the transactions and there was a simple click to request the refund." Advertisement She clicked on the option stating "purchase without consent" which she said gave her some "reassurance". But shortly after she claims she had an automated decline for all of the transactions and had to appeal. She was advised by Apple to speak with Roblox and her bank - but she hasn't been given any help since. How long should kids be on screens? Dr Amanda, who's a parenting expert and child psychologist gave a general guide for parents who wish to limit screen time. Age 1-3 years old How long: 5 minutes per year of life in one sitting Dr Gummer says: "If you are really hoping your child will learn from the screen time they have then one rule of thumb is that on average children can concentrate for 5 minutes per year of their life (i.e. 15 minutes at age 3)." Age 1+ How long: 1 hour per day Dr Gummer says: "For younger children we feel that around 1 hour per day is a sensible limit to aim for on a regular weekday. "Once you add together time on mobile devices, TV, computers and other devices with screens this may not seem like much (and remember children may get screen time at school)." Age 2+ How long: 2 hour per day Dr Gummer says: "Various sources including the American Academy of Paediatrics recommend no more than 2 hours per day (for children aged 2 and over)." Children of all ages Over two hours a day is excessive usage Dr Gummer says: "A recent study saw some detrimental effects in teenagers that used more than 3 hours per day of screen time and consider this 'excessive usage' Emma then escalated it with Apple and the outcome was that she was paid £78. Advertisement She said: "I'd like to see these organisations having some kind of security in place where they would recognise that it as unusual activity and maybe put a block. "I had bills to pay out and then there was no money on my account to pay them. I was really distressed about it." Emma explained how Apple have told her how to put blocks on Roblox to stop her daughter from buying coins. She said: "I've put a password on the iPad and I am a lot more conscious. I am still not 100 per cent confident about what I am doing because I think technology moves so fast. Advertisement "I went on the iPad the other day and I am checking it more regularly. "My downfall was I used to have an Apple phone and it was connected to the iPad and whenever they wanted to download a free app it would pop up on my phone and I'd have to click accept. "But then at Christmas time I changed my phone to a completely different make and it just didn't answer my thought process that I needed to go and put parental locks - I feel foolish about that but it is a hard lesson to learn. "I'm not particularly great with IT, I am not bad but I am a busy working mum got a professional job I'm trying to do the best I can." Advertisement Roblox statement In response Roblox said in a statement: "Roblox works with multiple payment providers to provide a safe and secure purchasing experience, and we have a robust policy for processing refund requests where there may have been unauthorized payments from a person's account. "Whenever possible, we work with parents directly to provide a refund for unauthorized purchases. "As noted in our help centre, we advise parents and caregivers that if they notice charges on their PayPal account that they did not authorize, to please contact Roblox Customer Support before disputing any charges. "This is because once a charge has been disputed, a refund cannot be issued due to the payment provider's dispute process. Advertisement "Similarly, where payments have been made through Apple/iTunes, as the payment provider they require any refunds to go through their support services and these charges cannot be refunded by Roblox. "Finally, it is very important to note that parents also have access to a suite of Parental Controls on Roblox, including spending limits so that parents can determine how much their children can spend, and spend notifications to increase visibility over their children's spending on Roblox." Apple, PayPal have also been approached for a comment.
