MAHE Bengaluru Observes World Environment Day with Call to Curb Plastic Pollution

Hans India2 days ago

Bengaluru, May 30: Marking World Environment Day 2025, the Bengaluru campus of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), a deemed-to-be university, hosted a day-long event on Thursday dedicated to sustainability and the global fight against plastic pollution.
The event, held in collaboration with the Indian Economic Trade Organisation (IETO) and the Manipal Centre for DWEEPA (Design with Environment through Education, Planning & Advocacy), was themed around the United Nations' global campaign 'Beat Plastic Pollution.' It brought together students, faculty, and environmental experts, along with international dignitaries, to promote practical and policy-level action toward environmental stewardship.
The programme began with a ceremonial planting of shrubs under the theme 'Green Beginnings,' symbolising the institution's commitment to biodiversity and ecosystem restoration. MAHE Bengaluru has been actively involved in rejuvenating local lakes and cultivating native plant species across its campus.
Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. (Dr.) Madhu Veeraraghavan, Pro Vice-Chancellor of MAHE Bengaluru, said the institution had taken steps to phase out plastic use on campus. 'We've eliminated plastic water bottles entirely and installed our own bottling plants. This infrastructure shift is backed by colour-coded bins for waste segregation and strategic partnerships with organisations like Vedanta. We believe institutions must lead by example,' he said.
Fernando Bucheli, Ambassador of Ecuador to India, delivered the keynote address, praising MAHE's commitment to the environment. He highlighted Ecuador's leadership in global environmental diplomacy, including the country's role in pushing for a legally binding international treaty to address plastic pollution. 'Every Ecuadorian household contributes to this effort. We are proud to collaborate globally for a cleaner future,' he said.
The event also featured a panel discussion on sustainability, with speakers sharing diverse perspectives. T. Paul Koshy, co-founder of Unified Intelligence Pvt. Ltd., presented innovations that repurpose non-recyclable plastic waste to construct low-cost housing. Dawood Sait, a marine industry expert, addressed the impact of plastic on ocean ecosystems, while academic and environmental philosopher Dr. Meera Baindur emphasised the need for transdisciplinary education to inspire long-term behavioural change.
In a symbolic gesture, attendees signed a 'manifesto' pledging to reduce their daily plastic consumption. The university also signed a General Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reinforce its environmental accountability.
A guided campus tour showcased MAHE's green initiatives, including semi-automatic water bottling units, the distribution of over 3,000 reusable glass bottles, and an outright ban on disposable 200ml and 500ml water bottles. Officials said the university is now planning to install on-site composting units as the next step toward sustainable waste management.
MAHE was recently ranked in the Platinum+ band under the Sustainable Institutions of India (SII) Green Rankings, recognising its ongoing efforts in building an eco-friendly academic environment.

Biopolymer innovation promotes sustainability

MUMBAI: Bioyug On Wheels – India's first mobile awareness initiative on polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers – was officially unveiled by the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in Mumbai recently. This pioneering effort marks a significant step toward mainstreaming sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics through direct consumer engagement and education. To promote PLA biopolymers as an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastics, Bioyug On Wheels—a first-of-its-kind mobile initiative—is set to hit the streets across India. This unique campaign features a specially designed van that showcases everyday products made from PLA, a sustainable, compostable biopolymer. By simplifying the science behind PLA and bringing it directly to communities, the initiative aims to build consumer awareness and encourage informed, responsible choices. This grassroots effort aligns with the 2025 World Environment Day theme, which calls for sustainable solutions to plastic pollution. Launched by Balrampur Bioyug, India's first industrial PLA manufacturing brand, Bioyug On Wheels bus is set to travel across India, making scheduled stops at key locations to engage directly with communities. At each stop, visitors will have the opportunity to explore how everyday products can be made from PLA (polylactic acid) and understand how a single lifestyle choice can support India's green transition. By offering a tangible alternative to conventional single-use plastics, the initiative aims to reduce dependency on fossil fuel-based materials and inspire more sustainable consumer behaviour. Second phase of Ram temple consecration starts in Ayodhya

Series of ceremonies to mark the second phase of consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya began on Tuesday. The events started with processions from the Saryu River followed by rituals for the 'Pran Pratistha' of the deities at the Ram Darbar on the first floor of the temple as well as in seven other temples located within the ramparts. Heavy security arrangements were made across the city for the three-day event, which will conclude on Thursday, on the occasion of Ganga Dasara. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is scheduled to attend four key events related to the consecration, including the main ceremony, the Saryu Trayodashi Utsav, the birthday celebrations of trust president Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, and an event on the World Environment Day. Secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Champat Rai, has urged the devotees to avoid visiting as no special arrangements for the crowd have been made considering the heat. The trust has also not made any public invitations for the event. 'The temple remains open for darshan of Lord Ram but the first floor of Ram Darbar and nearby temples are still under construction and are not open to devotees,' he said. Ayodhya District Magistrate Nikhil Tikaram Funde said considering the extra rush in town, arrangements such as shaded waiting areas, drinking water, sanitation and ORS sachets had been put in place for devotees. Emergency hospital beds had also been reserved across the district.
