Just For Laughs festival returns to Montreal: Michelle Buteau, Chris Distefano, Robby Hoffman, Mae Martin and more
Nick Brazao, head of programming, told Yahoo Canada it's "satisfying" to be able to bring this impressive lineup to the Montreal festival. Adding that there's a lot of anticipation to see how fans respond.
"There's a lot of pieces that go into putting it together, and then once you see it all kind of happening and all being talked about, it's a good time of year," Brazao said.
For years, comedy fans haven't just seen their favourite comedians at Canadian JFL festivals, but they're unique opportunities to get exposure to talents you never knew about. Whether it's an opener you had never heard of, or the spontaneous late night stop you make hopping from show to show, it's an incredibly fun time.
"To manufacture as much as you can the discovery and the surprise aspect is, I think, a huge part of what makes festivals special and makes them worth doing," Brazao.
But with so many comedians gaining popularity and a fan base on social media and other platforms, it all gets considered when it comes to, as Brazao described, the goal of having "something for everyone" at the festival.
"It's fun to see the effect of the internet," Brazao said. "The ability of people to reach specific pockets of audiences through social media, or through targeted platforms, whether it's Dropout Improv or things like Smosh Reads Reddit Stories, ... podcasting, ... through Instagram, through TikTok, or maybe more traditional comedy fans that are consuming Netflix specials and Amazon specials, ... [it's] trying to have as much of a varied landscape of that."
"People are finding ways to ... find audiences and find a relatability with people. And then now they have this opportunity in a fan base that wants to buy a ticket to see them do something. So now they have to kind of reverse engineer a show versus 15, 30, 42 years ago when the festival started, it was comedians starting with two minutes of material and going to an open mic night and turning that into five minutes of material, and turning that into 10 minutes. And if you're really good and really dedicated and brought yourself to so many audiences, you got seasoned enough to be a headlining act, and then you could hopefully be booked elsewhere."

Brazao also highlighted that it's significant for a comedy festival of this size to be in Canada.
"If you're in a comedy club anywhere in North America and even across the world, it's referred to as 'Montreal,' but they mean Just For Laughs, which is very cool that it's irreplaceable kind of currency in terms of brand recognition and value," he said. "So it's being able to hone that and respect that, to create something every year."
"I think any good comedy festival and any good event really embodies the DNA of the city. Montreal is a city unlike any other. ... There are a few festivals in the global footprint, like Edinburgh Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival, ... but I think Canada being such a comedy home and Montreal being such a renowned stand-up place that comedians want to go to, ... now it's part of the zeitgeist."
While many of the bigger names in the history of JFL have been American, there's also a commitment to including locals, but Brazao highlighted it's about providing a space where comedians from different markets, at different stages in their comedy careers, can come together.
"When you are engaging in an activity with diverse groups of comedians that are at the top of their game, then everybody's talent level rises along with it," he said. "Ultimately, we do a lot of thinking, of trying to set people up for success ... and can help them elevate to that next level. So I think by blending everybody together, giving them the chance to rub shoulders together and to experience things together, their network is going to be built bigger."
"The best comedians are evergreen in that they could perform in front of any audience with any sort of subjective experience from whatever community they live in, but you found a way to connect with them. ... We have a responsibility to try to bridge some of those gaps, or have them open for maybe more rare or a more currently famous foreign comedian. Maybe that leads to another opportunity of them going on tour or being exposed to their fan base, and now they get more followers from having opened for whatever bigger star could be here. And then those little pieces, I think, along the way, can build up to eventually, they can have their own headlining show on their own, and it can be part of their development."

What's planned for Pride month in Ottawa this August
With August being Pride month, there is no shortage of events around Ottawa celebrating the breadth of the 2SLGBTQ+ culture and experience. This year, Capital Pride is doing its big parade event on Aug. 24. on Elgin and Laurier streets. In addition to that, other groups are holding their own events throughout the month. The following list is organized by date but it is not comprehensive; there are many events throughout the city and organizers near you may be planning celebrations. Love in a Dangerous Time: Canada's LGBT Purge Date: Aug. 1-31. Hosted by: National Arts Centre. Love in a Dangerous Time: Canada's LGBT Purge is a pop-up exhibit by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. It examines a period known as "the Purge," when the Canadian government instigated, harassed and expelled 2SLGBTQ+ members of the armed forces from the 1950s to the 1990s. The event is free. Afternoon Tea Dance Date: Aug. 3. Hosted by: Homo Phono and The Grove. Afternoon Tea Dance, held by Homo Phone, is an event inspired by tea dance events organized in the American gay community originating in New York in the 1950s and 1960s. The original dances included tea services rather than alcohol as it was illegal to serve alcohol to queer and transgender people, organizers of this event explain in the description. Masks are mandatory for this event, which is also substance-free and sober friendly. Queer Bike Club Backpacking Trip Date: Aug. 9-10. Hosted by: Queer Bike Club. Queer Bike Club Ottawa is doing a weekend bike packing trip to Merrickville, Ont. It will be a 55-kilometre overnight trip to the Merrickville lock station. There is a sign up deadline of Aug. 4. The group also has other events running in August, including a social ride from Strathcona Park to Rockcliffe Park on Aug. 18. Annual Pride Coffee House Date: Friday, Aug. 15. Hosted by: Tungasuvvingat Inuit and the Inuuqatigiit Centre. The Annual Pride Coffee House is a way for Inuit 2SLGBTQ+ people and allies to come together as a community for Pride. There's a call-out for performers to accompany the food and beverages that guests will enjoy. It's a free event but guests are asked to register if they plan to join the fun. Pride Family Picnic Date: Saturday, Aug. 16. Hosted by: Centre33. The Pride Family Picnic will be held in Kanata by a community organization that hosts year-round 2SLGBTQ+ programming. It's specifically targeted at families, so there will be plenty to keep kids — and their parents — entertained. Beach Bums Tournament Date: Saturday, Aug. 16. Hosted by: Pride Capital Volleyball. Pride Capital Volleyball is a community group of volleyball enthusiasts of all skill levels. It regularly hosts youth and adult drop-in games, plus several leagues for competitive players. Its special tournament in August is called Beach Bums and is aimed at "intermediate/advanced" players in teams of four. If you want to play, there's a registration fee and you'll need to confirm your roster by early August. Spectators are also encouraged to turn out to support the players. Pride Night Market Date: Saturday, Aug. 16. Hosted by: Little Jo Berry's and Venus Envy Ottawa. Pride Night Market will be held at the Parkdale Market and will feature over 60 small business vendors selling snacks, non-alcoholic drinks, art, and other products. On-leash dogs are welcome and the event will feature live music from local queer performers. Halo-Halo: All-Asian Drag Fiesta Date: Sunday, Aug. 17. Hosted by: Saboroso Bistro and DragSilog Collective. Halo-Halo: All-Asian Drag Fiesta is an event organized by DragSilog Collective, which holds events aiming to celebrate and uplift voices of queer people of colour. The event will celebrate queer Asian joy and diversity along with hot Filipino food. Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and the event starts at 5 p.m. ElderQueers (2SLGBTQIA+) Storytelling Workshop Date: Aug. 18-22. Hosted by: National Arts Centre. ElderQueers is a workshop event lead by actress Mary Ellen MacLean where attendees can work on their storytelling skills over the course of five sessions. Participants may use movement, puppets, music and the stories they tell can be serious, comic, or both. Tickets cover all five workshop sessions. Queers & Beers Date: Thursday, Aug. 21. Hosted by: Queering613 and Overflow Brewing. Queers & Beers is exactly what it sounds like: a party at a craft brewery with live music. This year, you can expect to see Montreal DJ BLK PRL (aka Sandy Duperval) and Ottawa-born musician OK Naledi. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and performances start at 8 p.m. You can get tickets online or at the door. Street Festival Date: Aug. 23-24. Hosted by: Capital Pride. The 2025 edition of the annual Capital Pride street festival will feature community organizations, political groups, and a craft fair. Drag & Balls Date: Saturday, Aug. 23. Hosted by: OQSL and Bruce House. Drag & Balls is an annual charity softball event organized to support Bruce House, a local organization which helps people in Ottawa living with HIV and AIDS. The event includes a drag softball game and party. /this year's theme is Drag & Balls: Disco Inferno, so guests will be treated to "fierce" '70s fashion and "groovy tunes" hosted by Ottawa's DJ POWRHAUS. Bliss Date: Saturday, Aug. 23. Hosted by: Lez Go and Queen St. Fare. If you're into Ottawa's lesbian scene, you might be familiar with Lez Go: a group of "lesbian+" people that hosts community events for its members. This Pride month, you can attend its Bliss party at Queen St. Fare in downtown Ottawa. The festivities start around 7:30 p.m., and its website says you can expect a raffle, designated singles tables and performers like Rachelle Behrens and Rëa. Ottawa Dyke March Date: Saturday, Aug. 23. Hosted by: Ottawa Dyke March. The Ottawa Dyke March will be held the day before Capital Pride's Pride Parade, by a community group of the same name which describes itself as "devoted to creating spaces for dykes and their families, friends and allies." It will start at Minto Park that afternoon and end with a community gathering with food, face painting and other activities. Pride Square Dance Date: Saturday, Aug. 23. Hosted by: Ottawa Date Squares The Ottawa Date Squares is a local square dancing group that hosts events throughout the year. If you're in the mood to shake your feet this Pride Month, consider attending their Pride Dance. This free event welcomes participants with any level of experience and doesn't require you to bring a partner. They teach you everything you need to know and let the music take it from there. Pride Parade Date: Sunday, Aug. 24. Hosted by: Capital Pride. The Pride Parade, held annually by Capital Pride, will take place on the first day of its two-day festival. Dozens of local groups march in the parade and everyone is invited to watch the spectacle. Drag Bingo Date: Sunday, Aug. 31. Hosted by: Hammond Golf and Broken Stick Brewery. A few kilometres east of Ottawa, the Hammond Golf and Country Club is hosting a drag bingo event, hosted by drag artist and former Ms. Capital Pride, Devona Coe. Admission includes four rounds of bingo with four cards per round. Funds raised will be donated to Family Services Ottawa's Around the Rainbow program, according to the website.

HARD Summer music festival returns to Hollywood Park in Inglewood this weekend
The HARD Summer electronic music festival is returning to the Hollywood Park in Inglewood this weekend. The sold-out event will take place on Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of the Hollywood Park, which is adjacent to SoFi Stadium. The festival will be spread out on multiple outdoor stages that will feature a blend of hip-hop and EDM artists like Feid, Kaytranada, Busta Rhymes and Dom Dolla. The event will begin at 2 p.m. on both days and end at 10 p.m. Event organizers say it will take place rain or shine and encourage attendees to plan accordingly. The fun won't start and end with the music festival. HARD Summer will be hosting HARD Weekender, which hosts three pre-parties and eight after-parties across Los Angeles. The music festival returns after last year's event led to more than 100 noise complaints from neighbors. Last year, the El Segundo Police Department reported that callers were complaining of "loud booming noises." At the time, event organizers released a statement saying they were aware of the complaints, adding they "made extensive efforts to mitigate sound levels with operational changes." "While we always operate within legally acceptable decibel levels, we have sound monitors deployed in the field to monitor and respond to all noise complaints," festival organizers said. Jake Hurwitz & Amir Blumenfeld Celebrate 10 Years Of Headgum
Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld seem almost shocked when I bring up the fact that their podcast network, Headgum, turns 10 this month. 'We're so busy trying to work and grow the company, that we forgot to take a moment to celebrate,' Blumenfeld says over Zoom. 'Thanks for reminding us.' Known for their fan favorite web series Jake & Amir (formerly of CollegeHumor), the bicoastal comedy duo launched the company in August 2015 alongside fellow business partner, Marty Michael. By that time, they were already two years into their now-defunct advice podcast, If I Were You, and realized they had all the resources to strike out on their own. 'We thought, 'Wait a minute, we can have a podcast network. We know a lot of funny people and good salesmen from CollegeHumor,' notes Blumenfeld. ''We could just take all the stuff that we've learned in the last 10 years, create our own podcast network, and see if it takes off like Earwolf or PodcastOne.'' 'We felt like we had it under control,' echoes Hurwitz. 'And we were like, 'This is a lot easier than everybody thinks it is. We can help usher people into this new medium.'' The endgame was to create a place that was 'artist-friendly and all about the creators.' And so, Headgum was born. The impetus behind the name was a practical one — the website URL was available. According to Hurwitz, the three founders simply combined different words together until they found one they could all agree on. "'Headgum' was one of 40 different pitches,' he remembers. 'Marty and Amir both liked it.' Adds Blumenfeld, 'It's easy to spell, easy to say, plus [it's] two words that have never been together, so you can't search it and find something else." As for the meaning behind it, that's up for interpretation. Amir thought of Headgum in terms of network podcasts hopefully getting stuck in listeners' brains — like bubblegum. Jake, on the other hand, liked the idea of 'minty freshness, but for your brain," he says. 'There's kind of something in there for everybody." Of course, there were some growing pains for the fledgling brand, the most disruptive of which took the form of the Covid-19 pandemic. 'All of the podcasts kind of had to stop recording for a few weeks [and] all of the advertisers stopped spending money on all of the podcasts,' remembers Hurwitz, who notes that ultimate pivot to remote recordings via Zoom was, thankfully, rather painless. 'It turns out that it's super-easy and that people still love spending money on things that they hear about online. So it all worked out [in the end], but uncertainty was definitely the scariest, hardest part.' Amir's word of advice for any new start-up? 'Make sure you have enough capital to survive a downturn in the economy. Because things are hot and then they're not. You have to make sure you're a little bit recession-proof, because there might be a down month or year year when you're not making as much money as you thought you would.' Nowadays, the founders' biggest concern is looking after a staff of around 30 employees, which includes Vice President of Content Kaiti Moos, who was named among 'Hollywood's New Leaders' by Variety last year. '[We want to make] sure all the people working at Headgum are creatively fulfilled and satisfied enough to keep doing a great job,' states Blumenfeld. 'They're all individuals with hopes, dreams, goals, families. Things that happen to them outside of work,' agrees Hurwitz. 'So you get wrapped up in the individuals that help the company run, which gets complicated.' However, neither can deny the fact that hiring more people has allowed them to stop worrying about the minutiae of running a business — from managing freelancers to fixing audio interference (in other words, 'all that stuff that's we're not good at,' admits Hurwitz) — and allow them to focus on other endeavors like their Patreon. 'We make d*** and fart jokes," Jake adds. "So as Headgum has grown and we've been able to give those jobs to professionals, Amir and I can go back to basics. I think our comedy has gotten better as we've been able to let go some of some of the responsibilities." 'We lean on our employees a lot more now than we used to,' corroborates Blumenfeld. When it comes to content, the duo place a companywide emphasis on seeking out passionate storytellers with a comedy background. As such, the network currently includes a wide variety of shows from major talents like Allison Williams, Ego Nwodim, David Cross, Jake Johson Adam Conover, Wayne Brady and Tig Notaro. But fame isn't the sole factor in what projects they decide to take on. Says Hurwitz: 'We hear a lot of pitches that are just from people who are like, 'Everybody's doing a podcast. I think I have to make a podcast, so I can stay relevant.' We want to work with people that are animated, amped and excited about creating their show, because you really can't fake it in podcasting. You're talking for way too long to be able to phone it in.' What's more, the company is not owned by a larger entity, allowing it more creative freedom than the likes of Earwolf and PodcastOne, which fall under the corporate umbrellas of Sirius XM and LiveOne, respectively. 'We're still independent, so we're not completely beholden to a giant trillionaire company overlord," stresses Blumenfeld. "We're trying to hold on to the last few indie comedy vibes that are left in podcasting.' Perhaps the most unique draw of Headgum is the way in which it 'matches brands with creators in a hopefully seamless fashion,' Blumenfeld says. The all-in-one marketplace apparatus — appropriately dubbed 'Gumball" — was the result of frustration with the lack of transparency during the early years of If I Were You. 'We would get ads booked, but all of the information about our show was hidden from us,' reveals Hurwitz. '[For example], we would do an ad for Casper Mattress, but didn't know how many people were listening to it. We didn't even know what the podcast network was getting paid. We didn't know what we're getting paid. Every couple months, money would just show up in our account. There was archaic bookkeeping and it was kind of like operating in the shadows. But now, podcasting has been a lot more modernized. Advertisers know what they're buying and especially on Gumball, podcasters know what their ads are sold for, how many people they're reaching, what the brand is paying, when they've gotten paid. Our idea for it was basically, 'What if people knew how much their show was worth?'' At the time of our call, the Headgum founders are preparing for the conclusion of their multifaceted podcast, Segments (described as 'the Swiss Army Knife of shows,' it debuted in the fall of 2023), on September 15 after 'a solid run," Hurwitz says. But that doesn't mean they're done speaking into the mic. Far from it. Jake and Amir will continue to appear in Headgum originals, including the company's namesake podcast and the highly popular Not Another D&D Podcast (or 'Naddpod' for short). To give you an idea of the company's success thus far, Naddpod — which Hurwitz co-hosts with Brian Murphy, Emily Axford, and Caldwell Tanner — recorded a live episode at the famous Carnegie Hall to celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2023. Impressive, to be sure. And if you can believe it, they're just getting started, with Hurwitz promising that 'the shows are getting bigger and better." Here's to the next 10 years!
