KT to supply 14,000 body cams, build AI system for police
Over the next five years, KT will distribute approximately 14,000 body cameras to police officers working at precincts and patrol stations nationwide. This marks the first deployment of body cams, since they were officially designated as standard police equipment following a 2024 revision to the Police Officers Duty Act.
As part of the project, KT will also develop an AI-powered Digital Evidence Management System. The system will support digital evidence collection by digitizing crime scenes, automatically identifying and anonymizing sensitive information, assisting investigations through AI analysis, and enabling wireless transmission of footage while preserving the original files.
The company also won a related contract to supply smartphones and tablets to patrol vehicles, integrating them with the 112 emergency response system. The dual projects are expected to accelerate Korea's digital transformation in public safety.
'This project is a major milestone in the digital transformation of Korea's public safety system,' said Yoo Yong-kyu, head of KT's Enterprise Public Sector Division. 'KT will continue to support public security through AI-powered technology and innovation.'

KT&G extends Q2 growth streak on robust global sales
KT&G, South Korea's leading tobacco manufacturer, has logged three consecutive quarters of revenue and profit growth through the second quarter, backed by strong demand in key global markets. According to the company on Thursday, sales in the April-June period jumped 8.7 percent on-year to reach 1.55 trillion won ($1.12 billion), with operating profit surging 8.6 percent to 350 billion won. Having sustained revenue and profit growth since the fourth quarter of last year, the company also reported that first-half revenue surpassed the 3 trillion won mark for the first time. 'We have secured mid- to long-term growth momentum based on the excellent performance of new product launches in major global markets as well as brand power-based price hikes,' a KT&G official said, adding that the company aims to achieve double-digit annual growth in operating profit this year. KT&G's core tobacco segment sustained its growth trajectory, with revenue and operating profit rising by 10 percent and 1.6 percent on-year, respectively. The global cigarette business, in particular, marked its fifth consecutive quarter of growth in revenue, profit and sales volume. Revenue and volume both hit new quarterly records, with revenue up 30.6 percent on-year to 469 billion won and sales volume rising 9.1 percent to 16.7 billion sticks. Adjusted operating profit, excluding last year's allowance for doubtful account refunds, soared 51.1 percent. Under the vision of CEO Bang Kyung-man, the company has prioritized full localization of its value chain and established smaller local units to respond more agilely to market needs. Cost reductions are expected in the second half of the year, once its raw material sourcing system is fully localized. Outside its core tobacco business, the company's domestic next-generation products segment captured a 45.8 percent market share in the first half, driven by robust sales of its heat-not-burn device Lil Aible. The health functional foods segment, operated by Korea Ginseng Corp., posted an operating profit of 6.2 billion, turning profitable as a result of optimized marketing spend and a focus on profitability-driven strategies.

Seoul shares end higher on tech, auto gains
South Korean stocks closed higher Thursday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street, with strong performances in tech and auto shares leading the advance. The Korean won also rose against the US dollar. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index rose 29.54 points, or 0.92 percent, to close at 3,227.68. Trade volume was moderate at 324.1 million shares worth 11.16 trillion won ($8.08 billion). Advancers outnumbered decliners 459 to 406. Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.18 percent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 1.21 percent. In the local market, institutions bought a net 109.08 billion won worth of shares, while foreign investors and retail investors sold a net 17 billion won and 196.58 billion won, respectively. Analysts said institutional buying helped buoy the main index, despite ongoing concerns over US import tariffs and a potential slowdown in the US economy. US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs took effect at 1:01 p.m. Thursday (Korea time), but analysts said the impact on the main index was limited, as the tariffs had already been priced into the market. In Seoul, tech and auto stocks led the gains. Market bellwether Samsung Electronics rose 2.47 percent to 70,500 won on news that the chipmaker will manufacture Apple Inc.'s next-generation processor at its foundry in Austin, Texas. The tech giant also got a boost from the South Korean trade minister's comments that Korean semiconductor firms will likely face lower US tariff rates than global peers and competitors, citing the latest trade deal signed last week between Seoul and Washington, in which the latter agreed to offer most favored nation (MFN) status to South Korean chipmakers when it comes to import tariffs on semiconductors. US President Donald Trump has said his administration may impose 100 percent tariffs on all chip and semiconductor imports. Chip giant SK hynix advanced 1.35 percent to 262,000 won. Top carmaker Hyundai Motor gained 0.95 percent to 212,500 won following reports that the Korean automaker and General Motors will jointly develop five new models for the US and other markets in the Americas. Top shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries rose 1.82 percent to 475,000 won, while tech firm Kakao spiked 11.97 percent to 63,600 won. Leading battery maker LG Energy Solution edged up 0.65 percent to 386,500 won. Among decliners, major steelmaker POSCO Holdings slipped 0.34 percent to 297,500 won, and top refiner SK Innovation dropped 0.46 percent to 108,500 won. The local currency was quoted at 1,381.20 won against the greenback at 3:30 p.m., up 8.3 won from the previous session. Bond prices, which move inversely to yields, closed higher. The yield on three-year Treasurys fell 2.2 basis points to 2.408 percent, while the return on the benchmark five-year government bonds declined 1.8 basis points to 2.551 percent. (Yonhap)

Korean Air, Anduril join hands to co-develop uncrewed aircraft
South Korea's leading air carrier, Korean Air, announced on Thursday that it has signed a teaming agreement with US defense technology company Anduril to establish a strategic partnership in the uncrewed aerial vehicle sector across Korea and the broader Asia-Pacific region. The signing ceremony took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul, attended by key executives including Lim Jin-kyu, senior vice president of Korean Air's aerospace division, and Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril. The agreement builds upon a memorandum of understanding signed in April, through which both companies have been actively discussing areas of collaboration. Under the agreement, the two sides aim to co-develop Korean-tailored UAV models based on Anduril's products, explore licensed production and consider the establishment of an Asia-based UAV manufacturing hub, to be known as Arsenal South Korea. Their shared goal is to expand into the Asia-Pacific UAV market by focusing on mission-autonomous drone systems. Additional discussions are to take place following this agreement, with the aim of signing a final deal early next year. 'This collaboration between a leading UAV developer in Korea and an artificial intelligence-powered defense technology company marks the turning point in the global UAV market,' said a Korean Air official. 'We will further contribute to Korea's defense autonomy.'
