
DRDO Successfully Tests Maiden Flight Of Stratospheric Airship Platform
India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a significant milestone on May 3 with the successful completion of the first flight trial of its indigenous Stratospheric Airship Platform. The test was conducted at the Sheopur trial site in Madhya Pradesh, with the development led by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) based in Agra.
During the 62-minute test flight, the lighter-than-air airship carried an instrumental payload and reached an impressive altitude of approximately 17 kilometers. Engineers successfully tested critical in-flight systems, including envelope pressure control and emergency deflation mechanisms, while collecting valuable data from onboard sensors. This data will be instrumental in developing high-fidelity simulation models for future high-altitude airship missions.
Following the flight, the system was recovered for further examination and analysis, marking an important step forward in India's aerospace capabilities.
"This lighter than air system will enhance India's earth observation and Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance capabilities, making the country one of the few countries in the world having such indigenous capabilities," DRDO announced in a statement shared on social media platform X.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO team on this achievement, highlighting how the system positions India among a select group of nations with indigenous stratospheric platform technology. The successful test represents a significant advancement for India's defense and surveillance capabilities.
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, described the prototype flight as a milestone in developing lighter-than-air, high-altitude platforms capable of sustaining long endurance operations at stratospheric heights.

NIBE signs licensing pact with DRDO for modular bridging systems
NIBE announced that it has entered into a licensing agreement with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Research & Development Establishment (Engineers), Pune. The agreement covers the transfer of technology (ToT) to manufacture modular bridging systems ranging from 14 to 46 meters in length. Under the pact, NIBE will pay a total consideration of Rs 3.76 crore in tranches for the technology transfer. The company is licensed to use DRDOs technology for 10 years to manufacture Modular Bridging Systems in India, targeting the Indian Armed Forces and other central and state government agencies. DRDO will provide full technical know-how and testing methodologies. The Modular Bridging System is a complex, mechanically launched mobile solution designed for rapid deployment, enabling tracked and wheeled vehicles to cross obstacles efficiently. NIBE plans to launch the product within 24 months. NIBE trades in electronic components and fabrication materials and provides technical consultancy. It also provides services for the design, supply, erection, testing, and commissioning of low- and medium-voltage lines and substations on a turnkey basis. The company's consolidated net profit declined 30% to Rs 7.64 crore on a 25.8% drop in total income to Rs 113.64 crore in Q4 FY25 over Q4 FY24. Shares of NIBE rose 0.03% to close at Rs 1,675.85 on Friday, 6 June 2025.

Taiwan has sent a request to buy the D4 anti-drone system developed by India's DRDO and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). China is bound to get angry at this request of Taiwan because China does not want any country to help Taiwan. But the way China is giving defense packages and modern weapon systems to Pakistan, experts say that India should also hand over similar weapons to Taiwan. The D4 anti-drone system has been developed by India's DRDO and manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The power of the D4 anti-drone system was seen during Operation Sindoor, when Pakistan attacked India with about 300 to 400 drones made by Turkey and China. During this time, India shot down all the drones in the air itself. India also shot down Turkey's Bayraktar TB-2 drone. This revealed the strength of India's advanced soft kill jamming and hard kill laser capability which stunned the world. D4, i.e. Detect, Deter, Destroy, Defend, is an integrated anti-drone system developed jointly by India's DRDO and BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited). This system works at 4 levels. Detect: Accurately detects the presence of drones with multi-frequency radar and EO/IR sensor. Deter: It can deviate enemy drones from the mission through signal jamming and GPS spoofing. Destroy: Drones armed with laser-based hard-kill technology and RF jammers in the system can be destroyed in the air itself. Defend: Ensures the protection of sensitive areas from any remaining drone or swarm attack. China considers Taiwan as its part and has clearly stated that it does not mind using force to merge Taiwan with China. In the last few years, China has increased its military exercises and drone surveillance in the Taiwan Strait. Since 2024, the PLA has doubled the number of surveillance and attack drones near the Taiwan border. In such a situation, there is a great need for a first-rate anti-drone system for Taiwan.
