Portugal considers sweetening incentives for Golden Visa program

New Portuguese residents may also be eligible for a 20% flat tax on local income and a ten year exemption on most foreign income.Referring to the golden visa and tax programs, Amaro said that the government is looking into organizing them in 'a more effective and economically efficient way' while ensuring that any changes are 'economically and socially fair.'Portugal's approach stands in contrast to not only Spain, which scrapped its golden visa program in April over complaints that it was driving up housing prices, but also to other European nations. Malta, Ireland, the Netherlands and Greece have all either ended or tightened the rules around their golden visa or equivalent programs in recent years.Demand has risen for Portugal's golden visa, which only requires participants to spend about a week per year in the country. Golden visa approvals also rose 72% last year to a record 4,987 from the previous year, according to the country's immigration agency AIMA. Since the program launched in 2012, Americans have been among the top three recipients of golden visas along with Chinese and Brazilian nationals.Amaro, whose center-right government won a second mandate in an early election last month, said there were no plans to scrap or 'demonize' the golden visa. That's a reversal from the previous socialist government, which removed real estate investment as a basis for golden visa eligibility in 2023 as a way to fight speculation in the housing market, where prices have surged to record highs. It previously threatened to scrap the program entirely.'There's no plan to end it. It's not on the table,' said Amaro. He said AIMA is working on clearing a backlog of almost 45,000 golden visas applications currently awaiting review.'We expect that by the end of the year this process will be largely taken care of,' he added.

The Social Security data request was made by the Elon Musk-led DOGE before the fallout between the billionaire and the President. At the time, DOGE wanted to modernize the existing systems and detect waste and fraud at different levels. Their request revolved around Social Security numbers, medical records, and crucial financial information of Americans. 'These teams have a business need to access the data at their assigned agency and subject the government's records to much-needed scrutiny,' Solicitor General D. John Sauer was quoted as writing in the court documents. Meanwhile, the challengers' lawyers wrote, "The agency is obligated by the Privacy Act and its own regulations, practices, and procedures to keep that information secure — and not to share it beyond the circle of those who truly need it," according to the court documents.

Amit Shah launches language hub to 'decolonise' admin
NEW DELHI: Continuing with his govt's 'decolonisation' project, Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday launched an Indian languages section within the department of official language as a step towards dispensing with the role of English in official communication. "It would prove to be a milestone in the path to freeing administration from the influence of foreign languages," Shah said as he announced the formation of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag. So far, English had been relied upon for easy and faster official communication and filework between the Centre and non-Hindi speaking states and also among the latter. "We will definitely win the battle against imposition of English upon us," Shah, who over his six-year tenure in MHA has ensured that all filework and official communication in MHA is carried out in Hindi, declared at the launch of the Indian languages section on Friday. "Every language of ours is completely connected with other languages and development of all languages is not possible without each assimilate like rivers into the Ganga of Indian culture," the Union home minister stated.

US Supreme Court allows DOGE access to Social Security data
The US Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Department of Government Efficiency, billionaire Elon Musk's former department, broad access to the Social Security Administration's data systems. This will allow the DOGE to access personal information of millions of Americans logged under the SSA, news agency Reuters reported. Justices put on hold the order of Maryland-based US District Judge Ellen Hollander, who had largely blocked DOGE's access to "personally identifiable information" in data such as medical and financial records while litigation proceeded in a lower court. This move came at the Justice Department's request. The court, which had a 6-3 conservative majority, did not provide a rationale for siding with the DOGE. Two labor unions and an advocacy group sued to stop DOGE from accessing sensitive data at the SSA. The plaintiffs of the lawsuit argued that SSA had been "ransacked" and that DOGE members had been installed at the agency without proper vetting or training and demanded access to some of its sensitive data systems. Earlier in February, DOGE's move to seek access to SSA data prompted the acting commissioner, Michelle King, to step down against the backdrop of the Musk-security system issues. King chose to resign after over 30 years of service as she refused to provide the requested information to the DOGE staffers at the SSA. A day later, the White House had said that the Trump administration put an "anti-fraud expert" temporarily in charge at the SSA. At the time, Trump also directed Musk and DOGE to identify fraud at the agency, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying that several dead people have been receiving fraudulent Social Security payments. "They haven't dug into the books yet, but they suspect that there are tens of millions of deceased people who are receiving fraudulent Social Security payments and so their goal in going into the Social Security Administration is to identify three things: Number one, to identify duplicate payments and to end them, Number two, to identify payments that are going to deceased people who are no longer living and should no longer be receiving that money and number three, to protect the integrity of the system for hardworking Americans who have been paying into it their entire lives,' Leavitt had told Fox News. Nancy Altman, president of the Social Security Works, an advocacy group for the preservation of Social Security benefits, said that there is no way to overstate "how serious a breach this (DOGE seeks SSA data) is". "And my understanding is that it has already occurred. The information collected and held securely by the Social Security Administration is highly sensitive," she had added. SSA has the data of everyone with a Social Security number, Medicare, and every low-income American who has applied for Social Security's means-tested companion program, Supplemental Security Income. In addition, Social Security payments account for around $1.5 trillion, or a fifth, of the annual federal spending in the US. An audit from last year, a NYT report cited.
