Quantum Breakthrough: D-Wave Soars Over 1,000% in a Year

D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE:QBTS) stock surged more than 10% on Friday, extending a rally that tops 150% this month. The gains reflect progress across hardware, software and enterprise deployments. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Signs with QBTS. Over the past year, QBTS has climbed about 1,281%, far outstripping the Internet Software industry's 35% rise and the S&P 500's 12%. Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ:RGTI) and IonQ (NYSE:IONQ) have also jumped but lag D-Wave, up 840.6% and 402%, respectively. In Q1 2025, D-Wave's 1,200-qubit Advantage2 prototype solved a complex magnetic simulation in minutes, a task estimated to take one million years on the Frontier supercomputer. That real-world demonstration of quantum supremacy underscored the firm's annealing approach. The company also scaled up its Advantage2 system to more than 4,400 qubits, boosting coherence times and connectivity for tackling optimization tasks and AI challenges. D-Wave unveiled a Proof of Quantum Work model suggesting blockchain energy use could drop by up to 1,000x. Corporations such as Ford Otosan and NTT DOCOMO are piloting D-Wave's systems for manufacturing and telecom optimization. Investors may view these advances as validation of the technology's commercial potential. This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Sign in to access your portfolio

AI Search Engine Perplexity Gains Traction vs. Google

Perplexity keeps breaking records, clocking 780 million searches in Maya 20% jump from Aprilas CEO Aravind Srinivas told Bloomberg Tech Summit attendees that people are tired of legacy browsers like Chrome. If Perplexity can keep this momentum, Srinivas believes it could hit 1 billion weekly queries soon, thanks to everything happening in its search bar, new-tab page and sidecar interface that drives extra engagement. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Sign with PYPL. The startup, backed by Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Jeff Bezos, is also gearing up to launch Comet within three to five weeks. Comet is Perplexitys new agentic search service that does things for youlike record your virtual meetings, transcribe them and let you search what was said. Srinivas admitted building those features has been harder than anticipated, but he says reliability and speed have improved, and everyones working super hard to get the browser out in your hands. Perplexity just added a way to buy products directly in chat via PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL) or Venmo, hinting at future revenue beyond ads. That matters because Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) still owns about 90% of search trafficand even though Bing sits in second with around 4%, Perplexitys off-the-charts growth and $14 billion valuation (up from $9 billion in December) show investors are betting that a browser-native, AI-first experience could steal user time and queries. Investors should keep an eye on whether Perplexity can sustain these gains once Comet goes live; this summers traffic pick-up and early feedback on Comet will be key gauges. Nvidia, Meta, Apple Lead Tech Rebound After Robust Jobs Data

June 6 - Stocks climbed after May's U.S. jobs data beat estimates, sending indexes higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped about 510 points, or 1.2%. The S&P 500 also added roughly 1.2%, reaching the 6,000 mark for the first time since late February. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.4%. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) led gains among major names, jumping more than 3% after tumbling the previous day amid a public spat involving Elon Musk. Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) also traded higher. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 139,000 in May, topping economists' projections of 125,000 but coming in slightly below April's revised 147,000 gain. The jobless rate remained at 4.2%. Today's jobs report may not prompt the Fed to cut rates, said Eric Merlis, co-head of global markets at Citizens. He noted that while other indicators point to a softer labor market, demand for workers remains stable as firms adapt to policy shifts. Earlier this week, weekly unemployment claims came in above forecasts, and ADP data showed private payrolls grew by just 37,000 in May, missing estimates. For the week, the S&P 500 and Dow are up nearly 2% and 1.5%, respectively, while the Nasdaq is more than 2% higher. This article first appeared on GuruFocus.
