Russian agent 'plotted to assassinate Zelensky with sniper rifle or drone strike at Polish airport', Ukrainian security chief reveals
The head of Ukraine 's security services (SBU) today revealed more details about a plot to assassinate Volodymyr Zelensky at an airport in Poland.
SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk told reporters at a press conference in Kyiv that a Polish military veteran named Pawel K. was working with Russia's military intelligence services on a plot to murder Zelensky at Rzeszow Airport last year.
Polish prosecutors previously said the man, now a pensioner, was arrested in April 2024 based on tip-offs from Ukrainian intelligence that he had been recruited by Russia.
He had reportedly planned to pass information about airport security to his Russian handlers.
But Malyuk today gave more information about the case, claiming the Pole had been 'activated' by Russia's intelligence agencies and was set to take a shot at Zelensky with a sniper rifle.
He had also explored the possibility of using a first-person-view (FPV) drone to target the Ukrainian leader, Malyuk said.
The details, first reported by RBC Ukraine, emerged hours after Zelensky boarded his presidential jet at Rzeszow Airport and headed for London where he met with King Charles earlier today.
Polish authorities in May indicted Pawel K. for his role in the assassination plot.
He is awaiting trial and faces up to eight years in prison, according to prosecutors.
Rzeszow Airport was not a significant location for air traffic prior to Russia's full-scale invasion, but quickly became a central hub for the provision of aid to Ukraine, and as a departure airport for Ukrainian officials taking part in foreign delegations.
In March 2023, a group of foreign citizens were arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia in the vicinity of the airport, Polish government officials said.
Polish security services reportedly broke up the spy network accused of installing secret cameras at Rzeszow to film the transport infrastructure used to deliver aid to Ukraine.
The group also allegedly installed dozens of cameras near railway junctions and key transport routes in areas close to the Ukrainian border, which lies some 75km from Rzeszow.

Vladimir Putin will not intervene in his ally Iran's war with Israel, in order to appease Donald Trump, Moscow insiders have revealed. They said that Putin did not want to provoke the US president, to avoid a tougher line from the White House on Russia's war in Ukraine. The Telegraph spoke to four current Russian officials and diplomats, as well as several retired officials. They all spoke on condition of anonymity. The Kremlin had calculated that Mr Trump would not risk starting a war with Iran, they said, but was re-evaluating its appraisal of the mercurial, America First president after the US air strikes on the Islamic republic. On Monday, Putin hosted Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian foreign minister, in Moscow two days after Mr Trump sent bomber planes to strike Iran's three main nuclear sites. The Russian president told Mr Araghchi in televised comments: 'The absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis and no justification.' Putin may have condemned the US strikes when hosting the chief diplomat of a key ally in the war with Ukraine, but away from the cameras the Russians are far more cautious. The bombing of Iran 'broke the pattern of thinking in Moscow, where officials had assumed Trump wouldn't so readily abandon his self-proclaimed image as a peacemaker', a serving Russian diplomat told The Telegraph. 'For us, first Israel's decisive strike on Iran and the US's active involvement was a cold shower and a game changer. Now the situation looks dangerous to us,' said another envoy. Putin would prefer to appease Mr Trump so his illegal war in Ukraine can continue, despite the two leaders ostensibly holding peace talks over the conflict. One Russian diplomat told The Telegraph: 'Some officials believe that if we stay flexible and avoid pressing the Iran issue too hard, we might get some relief from the United States on the Ukraine front. 'They hope the White House will understand, that there will be no serious new sanctions, and that Trump will tolerate the continuation of the special military operation as it is now.' Another diplomat said: 'Our relationship with the US is already complicated because of Ukraine, and there is already some frustration and irritation from Trump about our stance.' Avoiding risk 'Adding a Middle East disagreement on top of that is seen as an excessive political risk we would rather avoid,' a different diplomat added. It is unlikely that Putin would jeopardise his 'romantic relationship' with Mr Trump for the sake of preserving ties with the ayatollahs, Arkady Dubnov, an independent Russian political analyst, said. The war in Ukraine continues to drain Moscow's military, economic, political and diplomatic resources, sharply limiting its capacity to act elsewhere, including in a conflict where it has significant economic stakes and in a region where it has historically wielded influence. Since Mr Trump entered the White House, Russia has routinely offered itself as a mediator in talks over Iran's nuclear programme, according to a government official familiar with foreign policy planning. Before the recent escalation, Mr Trump had not rejected the idea outright. But he has since come out against it in strong terms. Putin's offer to mediate in the conflict between Israel and Iran was swiftly dismissed by both Israel, which has a large Russian-speaking community, and the United States. Russia might have once acted as a guarantor, but today it lacks the leverage even to influence Tehran directly. A former senior Kremlin official said: 'Negotiating only works when you have something to bargain with. We can hardly influence Iran's position right now. We simply do not have the tools. 'And if we are talking about surrender, what kind of terms can we possibly secure for that country?'

Putin will be terrified by how easily Iran's Russian air defences went down
The debris is beginning to settle after the dynamic US strike on Iran's nuclear weapons sites. Operation Midnight Hammer, an incredible demonstration of US military power – and Israeli operations before it – have made plain the fragility of Russian air defence systems. These events will be shaking the very foundations of the Russian military. The simple fact is that Israeli jets have been operating at will in Iranian airspace for some time. Now a huge US strike package including seven B-2 bombers, 75 cruise missiles and no doubt numerous other jets have arrived without difficulty, delivered 14 Massive Ordnance Penetrators with pinpoint accuracy. All of this has been completely unaffected by Iranian air defences based around Russian S-300 missiles, Russian fighter jets and a Russian concept of operations. This has to be causing panic in Moscow. The war in Ukraine has been very different from that between Iran and Israel. Above Ukraine the air defenders – or 'cloud punchers' as they're known in the British forces – seemingly rule the skies. Neither side dares to send aircraft even near the enemy front lines, let alone across them: Russian jets manage to deliver effective strikes using standoff glide bombs and cruise missiles, and Ukraine has retaliated with drones and limited supplies of long-ranging Western missiles. The mission of Suppression of Enemy Air Defences, which has been carried out so effectively by Israel against Iran, has proved unachievable for both sides. But it is clear that it can be done, at least by well-equipped Western nations against Russian defences – and that will be striking fear into Putin's heart. Russia to be sure has moved on to the more capable S-400 (and in some cases the very newest S-500), but the S-400 was merely an upgrade to the S-300 and the S-500 is probably more hype than substance. The Russian dictator and his advisers must now have realised that their defences could easily be suppressed if the Ukrainians – or another opponent such as Nato – had the right tools. Of course we have come to understand that Putin and the Russian high command have virtually no regard for casualties. We have just seen over one million Russian military dead and wounded in Ukraine. But we can be sure that Putin and his generals will be concerned for their own personal safety. The comprehensive US and Israeli intelligence networks that we have seen in Iran – which even allow them to pinpoint and assassinate key leaders and nuclear scientists almost at will – will have terrified the Kremlin hierarchy, the more so as Ukraine appears to have similar reach inside Russia. Operation Spider's Web, in which Russia's strategic air fleet was decimated several times over, stands testament to their effectiveness. It is now even clearer that America has total overmatch against Russia's forces, and if Trump chose to he could inflict total battlefield defeat on Putin – or eliminate him personally – by equipping Ukraine with the same weapons that Israel has. Hopefully, now Trump is buoyed by his success in Iran, this demonstration of superior military power to the Kremlin – backed by some suitably robust messaging – will convince Putin to come to the negotiation table. If Trump achieves this, he may well get the Nobel peace prize he so covets, and he would deserve it.

Zelensky welcomed to No 10 for meeting with Starmer ahead of Nato summit
Volodymyr Zelensky has met Sir Keir Starmer and the King during his visit to the UK ahead of a crunch Nato summit. The Ukrainian president arrived in Downing Street where he was expected to discuss Britain's ongoing support for his war-torn nation on Monday afternoon, after being welcomed to Windsor Castle for lunch with Charles. Mr Zelensky, who is usually seen wearing military fatigues, wore a black blazer and trousers throughout his Monday visits. He and Sir Keir embraced on the doorstep of No 10, where a red carpet had been rolled out for the Ukrainian leader. Charles and Mr Zelensky were earlier pictured chatting as they made their way through Windsor Castle, and smiling as they shook hands in the Grand Corridor. During his visit to London, the Ukrainian leader was also welcomed to the Palace of Westminster and met Commons speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle and his Lords counterpart, Lord McFall of Alcluith. His arrival in the UK follows reports that Russia fired 352 drones and 16 missiles at Ukraine overnight, killing at least 10 civilians including seven in Kyiv. Mr Zelensky said preliminary reports indicated Russia had used North Korean missiles to attack Kyiv and described those two countries, and Iran, as a 'coalition of murderers'. His visit to London takes place the day before Nato leaders are set to meet in The Hague for a two-day summit, with increased defence spending top of the agenda. Mr Zelensky has been invited to the summit but will not take part in its main discussions, and it is still unclear whether he will attend at all. Ahead of the visit, a Downing Street spokesman said Sir Keir would 'reiterate our steadfast support for Ukraine' during his meeting with Mr Zelensky.
