Majlish A'Shura seeks fairer funding for private college students

Muscat – The Education, Scientific Research and Innovation Committee of the Majlis A'Shura met specialists from the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation on Monday to discuss the criteria for financial support provided to domestic scholarship students at private higher education institutions. The meeting, chaired by Jamal Ahmed al Abri, head of the committee, followed directives from His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to ensure fair support for Omani students across the higher education system. Discussions focused on how eligibility rules are set and the need to revise current regulations. Committee members stressed that students enrolled in private institutions should receive financial allocations comparable to those studying in public institutions. Members raised public concerns about what many see as an unfair funding system, pointing out that some families with children in private colleges are excluded from support due to criteria that do not always reflect their financial reality. Ministry officials said eligibility is determined by factors such as household income, family size and the distance between home and campus. They acknowledged receiving several complaints from parents and community members calling for a review of the system. During the session, the committee also reviewed a report from its recent meeting with the Oman Authority for Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance of Education, which covered school evaluation policies. Members further examined the Ministry of Education's 2024 annual report.

Oman intensifies diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman carried out a number of high-level diplomatic engagements on Sunday in a bid to reduce mounting regional tensions following the recent Israeli attacks on Iranian territory. The efforts reflect Oman's constant commitment to peace, dialogue, and the rule of international law amid growing instability in the region. As part of these efforts, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik received two important phone calls — one from Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Federal Republic of Germany and the other from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of the Republic of Türkiye. The calls focused on the rapidly evolving regional developments and affirmed Oman's role as a credible and trusted partner in advancing peaceful dialogue. Demonstrating further commitment to active diplomacy, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Oman's Foreign Minister, held a crucial meeting in Muscat with the visiting German Foreign Minister. The talks addressed the ongoing Israeli military actions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which have targeted sovereign infrastructure and caused significant casualties. They also reviewed the devastating humanitarian situation in Gaza, where violence, displacement, and destruction persist at alarming levels. During the meeting, Oman reiterated its principled stance in rejecting violations of international law and breaches of national sovereignty. Sayyid Badr stressed the need for a just and comprehensive resolution, underlining the two-state solution as a central pillar for lasting peace and calling for greater international recognition of the State of Palestine. Both sides agreed on the urgent need to amplify diplomatic channels and cooperative international efforts to curb further escalation and restore stability to the region. The German Foreign Minister praised Oman's balanced and constructive role in facilitating dialogue and advocating for legal and humanitarian solutions. In addition to in-person discussions, al Busaidi continues to engage in a series of intensive phone consultations with his counterparts across the region and beyond. These efforts aim to mobilise political and legal pressure through international institutions to halt the aggression and uphold the principles of justice and accountability. Meanwhile, the Sultanate of Oman remains a firm advocate for rational diplomacy and multilateral cooperation.
