But, while paintings are breaking records, there's one segment that's quietly on carving out a space of its own — sculptures. 'Sculpture has been a somewhat neglected medium that is now beginning to get its due from collectors,' says Ashish Anand of art gallery DAG.

Since 2022, experts say that there has been a noticeable increase in both interest and sales volume. Auction house results reflect a clear upward shift as well. 'There has been a 20–30% rise in the number of sculptures offered in auctions since 2017,' shares Manoj Mansukhani, CMO, AstaGuru Auction House.
'Sculptures are now more frequently crossing their high estimates, indicating that buyers are not only showing more interest, but are also willing to invest significantly.' Rahul Khanna of Palette Art Gallery adds that over the past few years, they have seen 'a 30– 40% rise in the average selling price of sculptures'.

An entrepreneur and art collector who recently picked up two Himmat Shah creations says, 'Shah was an artist of tremendous depth and one of India's pioneering sculptors with stunning creations. Buying his works was an easy decision, including from an investment perspective, as there is great relative value at his current prices and financial upside in the near future.'
Rock and a Hard Place
Some sculptures tip the scales at tonnes, making them awe-inspiring but not exactly easy to live with.
'Shipping and handling are definitely more complex with sculptures. But once someone connects with the piece, those challenges become secondary,' explains fashion designer and artist Jenjum Gadi.
'For collectors concerned about weight or space, there are several alternatives. Tabletop sculptures are ideal for shelves and consoles, while wall-mounted relief sculptures combine the spatial depth of sculpture with the convenience of wall art. Many contemporary artists now create modular or sectional works that can be assembled on site,' says AstaGuru's Mansukhani.
Sculptors are working with fibreglass, resin, paper pulp and mixed media materials that capture the visual gravitas of stone or metal, but without the accompanying logistical challenges. This allows for more fluid forms and contemporary finishes.
Chiselled and in Vogue
The exponential increase in wealth in India helps. Damian Vesey, director, international specialist, South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art at Christie's, says that the market is clearly being led by Indian collectors — including the diaspora. 'We're also seeing that more people are comfortable living with large sculptures, even in urban homes,' he says. International exposure through art fairs, biennales and museum retrospectives — like Mrinalini Mukherjee's exhibition at the Met Breuer — has raised awareness and appreciation for Indian sculptors. Social media has also amplified this trend. Artist Narayan Biswas believes that the pandemic has had a role. 'The stillness of lockdown allowed many artists to return to traditional, tactile mediums — embracing the slow, grounding nature of sculpture.'
Life of the Living Room
With modern architecture leaning into open plans, vast glass panels and minimal partitions, traditional wall art isn't the only option, there are more adaptable forms of expression — sculptures included.

Who's buying?
The young, the old, the new, the bold. While established collectors make up a fair share of the sculpture market, young collectors — people in their 30s, 40s, and some even in their 20s — are also poring catalogues. Artist Paresh Maity says, 'Now, the younger generation is at the forefront, as they have understood the value of collecting art, especially sculptures.'

Sony moves Bombay HC to challenge TDSAT stay on Tata Play disconnection
Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has moved the Bombay High Court to challenge a recent Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) order restraining SPNI from proceeding with a disconnection notice issued to direct-to-home (DTH) operator Tata Play . A division bench of the court comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale on Tuesday issued notices to TDSAT and Tata Play, directing them to file their responses. The matter has been posted for further hearing on Monday, June 16. SPNI, a Sony Group Corp-owned entity operating under the legal name Culver Max Entertainment, runs 27 television channels. It issued a disconnection notice to Tata Play, the country's largest DTH operator with 18 million subscribers, after the latter decided to remove its channels from consumer packs following disagreements over the renewal of their annual subscription deal. While staying SPNI's disconnection notice on May 27, TDSAT had directed Tata Play to pay Rs 40 crore to the broadcaster within two weeks as part-payment against SPNI's claimed dues of Rs 128 crore. The tribunal said this amount would be adjusted against the final liability determined during the final hearing. People familiar with the dispute between the two said SPNI is seeking a fee hike, which Tata Play has resisted citing declining viewership of its channels. TDSAT in its order noted that not granting the stay could result in irreparable harm to Tata Play. It directed both parties to reconcile their differences, including at the account level. In the High Court, senior counsel Janak Dwarkadas, along with Sneha Jaisingh of Bharucha & Partners, appeared for SPNI to challenge the TDSAT order. Senior counsel Ravi Kadam is representing Tata Play. In the TDSAT, Tata Play's counsel argued that the broadcaster's demand was unjustified, claiming the company had already paid about Rs 4,000 crore over the past decade, including Rs 700 crore annually. They further contended that substantial payments had been made since SPNI's initial communication in March 2025, which had sought dues of Rs 300 crore. Tata Play, jointly owned by Tata Sons (70%) and Walt Disney (30%), reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 510 crore for FY25, up 44% from Rs 354 crore the previous year. Revenue declined 5.46% to Rs 4,082 crore, driven by subscriber losses amid increased competition from DD Free Dish and the rising popularity of OTT platforms. SPNI reported a 19% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 839 crore for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024. Revenue from operations fell 3% to Rs 6,510 crore, with advertising revenue declining 11% to Rs 2,912 crore, while subscription revenue rose 7% to Rs 3,346 crore. According to Ashish Pyasi, partner at law firm Aendri Legal, the TDSAT resolves conflicts between telecom and broadcast companies. Its rulings can only be challenged in the Supreme Court. There is no provision for challenging the interim orders to the Supreme Court. 'However, if someone files a writ petition in the High Court against a temporary TDSAT order, they are asking the High Court to use its special powers, which is only allowed in rare cases,' adds Pyasi.

Tata Electronics sends hundreds of staff to Taiwan for semicon training
Tata Electronics is sending scores of employees for training to Taiwan as the company's plans for semiconductor fabrication (fab) and assembly and test (OSAT) facility pick up speed, people aware of the developments told ET. So far, the electronics arm of the Tata Group has sent 'a couple of hundred' employees to its technology partner Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) for training in specialised skills required to operate the upcoming fab in Dholera , they said. 'The number of people going in for training to Taiwan from Tata Electronics has certainly gone up as the company gets closer and is preparing for its fab,' one of the persons cited above said. 'Talent is the biggest gap.' Tata Electronics is following a structured plan as the number of people that PSMC can train at one time is limited, the person said. 'About 50 to 75 people are being sent at one go. It's a very methodical, thoughtful process.'Tata Electronics' upcoming Rs 91,000-crore fab in Dholera is expected to generate over 20,000 direct and indirect skilled jobs while the Rs 27,000-crore OSAT facility in Assam would create about 27,000 direct and indirect jobs. While speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Tata unit at Dholera in March 2024, Union Minister for electronics and information technology Ashwani Vaishnaw predicted that the first chip from Dholera unit will be out by December 2026. The Assam OSAT's first phase is expected to become operational by mid-2025. The person quoted earlier said the company is hiring people in batches of around 75 people, based on different functions. "Different batches focus on distinct operations like equipment, yield engineering, process technology and another on quality engineering – which is generally a smaller group that doesn't need as many people,' the person said. It has hired both fresh college graduates and those with a few years of experience in the industry, and 'is sending these people to Taiwan for training." Tata Electronics has been doubling down on the talent front, be it hiring top executives from chip makers like Intel and GlobalFoundries, or making its fresh or less experienced employees ready and equipped with the requisite skills. Tata Electronics chief executive and managing director Randhir Thakur , too, joined from Intel, where he served as the president of Intel Foundry Services. In April, the company appointed GlobalFoundries' Asia president KC Ang as the president and head of Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing. ET had also reported on June 3 that the company may possibly acquire a Malaysian chip plant as a means to gain on-ground experience of how to run such facilities. As per the firm's agreement with PSMC, the technology partner will provide design and construction support to build India's first AI-enabled state-of-the-art greenfield fab in Gujarat, license a broad portfolio of technologies, and provide engineering support to successfully transfer licensed technologies to the fab. This fab will have manufacturing capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month and will include next-generation factory automation capabilities deploying data analytics and machine learning to achieve industry-best factory efficiency. Tata Electronics said the fab will manufacture chips for applications such as power management IC, display drivers, microcontrollers (MCU) and high-performance computing logic, addressing the growing demand in markets such as AI, automotive, computing and data storage, and wireless communication.
