Former Brisbane Lions sponsor goes bust, leaving 200 workers in limbo
A logistics company that just four years ago was the Brisbane Lions' major sponsor has gone into voluntary administration, placing about 200 jobs across the country at risk.
XL Express, based at Archerfield in Brisbane's south, brought in FTI Consulting to act as administrators last week to determine the best path forward for the company's creditors.
One employee, who did not want to be named, said XL Express staff had demanded answers but were met with silence from the company.
'On Tuesday [last week], I received a message from the company saying there would be no service on Wednesday and that we would return to work on Thursday, but unfortunately, that did not happen,' he said.
'On Wednesday afternoon, we received a message from our boss saying the company was declaring bankruptcy, and then wishing us good luck in our new ventures.
'We were all speechless.'

Victoria has announced an urgent review into childcare safety after a former Melbourne daycare worker was charged with more than 70 child sex offences. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan on Wednesday confirmed the government will fast-track a state register of childcare workers, noting work is already under way on a national level. The state will also bring forward a ban of personal devices at childcare centres, effective from September 26. Childcare facilities caught breaking the ban could be slapped with a hefty fine of up to $50,000. The reform follows allegations of sexual assault against 26-year-old former childcare worker Joshua Dale Brown being made public by police on Tuesday. Mr Brown faces staggering list of charges, including sexual penetration of a child under 12, and producing child abuse material for use through a carriage service. The offences allegedly occurred at Creative Gardens Early Learning Centre in Point Cook, where Mr Brown was employed from October 2021 until February 2024. "Every Victorian was just so completed horrified by those sickening allegations that were made public," Ms Allan told reporters on Wednesday. Ms Allan said she would not comment further on the case, noting there is an active police investigation. "What we do know ... is that families must be able to trust that their children are safe when they are placed in the care in childcare centres," Ms Allan said. "I will do everything in my power to make sure that parents can trust the system." Ms Allan acknowledged work was being done with the Commonwealth and state and territories governments to strengthen safety in the childcare sector, but stressed urgent reform is needed. "Here in Victoria, though, I will not wait. Families cannot wait," the Premier said. "More needs to happen now and that is why, in acknowledging that there is work to create a national register of childcare workers, more needs to happen now. "We will start building the Victorian register to give families an extra layer of checks and balances as soon as possible." Ms Allan said all Victorian childcare centres will be put "on notice" that they will need to adhere to the personal devices ban from September 26. The Premier will ask for the review into the state's childcare sector to be provided to the government by August 15. Ms Allan said the review will be will be a "short sharp piece of work that will focus on the immediate actions" the state can take to strengthen childcare safety. "I want this Victorian review to examine options, for example, of installing CCTV in childcare centres," she said. "We'll also too look at the national framework for childcare to see if we can go even further and act faster on any of the measures that are currently being considered at a national level. "I'll be clear too, that we will be adopting the recommendations of the review and looking at how we can implement them as quickly as possible." The person tasked with spearheading the review is expected to be announced by the end of the week.

The single-level home at 1/187 Jells Rd sold under the hammer for $813,000, with bidding quickly climbing above the listing's quoted range of $770,000-$810,000. Auctioneer Robert Cincotta took fast-paced offers from four competing buyers before selling under the hammer to an older couple, whose daughter helped them secure the keys. Beloved jockey killed in freak horse incident identified
The freak accident happened when the female worker was putting a saddle on the horse and the animal lashed out and kicked her in the head. Tributes are flowing for a beloved jockey who was killed in a freak incident with a horse at the Cranbourne Training Centre. Peta Tait, 43, who was an active member of the Victorian racing scene for nearly three decades, has been remembered as a 'passionate, caring, hard working person'. An investigation is underway into Ms Tait's sudden death on Tuesday after she was kicked by a horse. Victoria Police said those on the scene performed CPR but she could not be revived. Racing Victoria and Southside Racing confirmed Ms Tait's death on Wednesday. Aaron Morrison, RV chief executive, shared his 'heartfelt condolences' to Ms Tait's loved ones. 'Like all within our industry, Peta loved horses and she forged a career working with them, helping numerous trainers prepare their horses as a trackwork rider or strapping them on raceday,' Mr Morrison said. 'Peta made a valuable contribution to Victorian racing over more than 25 years and her sudden passing will be felt by many, particularly in Cranbourne where she was based.' Mr Morrison said the tragic accident served as an 'untimely reminder' of the 'thousands of unsung heroes' who work in stables every day and provide high-quality care to racehorses. Ms Tait started out as a licensed jockey in picnic racing, an amateur competition, when she was 16 and went on to have a career as a trackwork rider and assistant to other trainers. Ms Tait rode 48 winners in her time as a picnic jockey from 1998 to 2019. This included a win at the 2013 Hinnomunjie Cup with horse Gaudalcanal. She finished her amateur race riding career on a high in October 2019 when she won the 1200m Cranbourne Corinthian on Unruly Student. Ms Tait's colleagues at Busuttin Racing, trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, said their thoughts are with those 'nearest and dearest to Peta'. Southside Racing Chief Executive Neil Bainbridge said support is being provided to those affected by Ms Tait's sudden death. 'We are providing support to Peta's employer, their staff and our staff who have been greatly affected by this terrible accident that occurred in the stables,' Mr Bainbridge said. He said Ms Tait was a 'well-known and liked' member of the community, and that her absence will be 'felt by lots of people'. Victorian Jockeys Association chief executive Matt Hyland said Ms Tait was a very popular rider on the picnic circuit and around the south-east of the state where she rode trackwork. The announcement of Ms Tait's death also prompted an outpouring of tributes and condolences on social media. Andrew Stead wrote on Facebook that Ms Tait was the most 'passionate, caring, hard working person' he had ever met. Monica Croston shared that she is 'heartbroken by the loss of (her) special friend Peta Tait'. Racing Victoria has encouraged members of the racing industry to seek support by calling free and confidential counselling service Stableline on 1300 530 122.
