Massive 8.6 magnitude earthquake near Russia triggers tsunami alerts

A powerful magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck off Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, triggering tsunami warnings, evacuation orders, and reports of minor damage. Authorities said it was the most severe quake in decades in the region, reported Reuters. 'Today's earthquake was serious and the strongest in decades of tremors,' Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said in a video posted on Telegram, reported Reuters. Preliminary information indicated no injuries, though a kindergarten sustained damage. Epicentre near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, quake shallow According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was shallow, occurring at a depth of 19.3 kilometres (12 miles). The epicentre was located about 125 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city of 165,000 people on Avacha Bay. The USGS initially measured the quake at magnitude 8.0 but later revised it to 8.6. Tsunami alerts issued across Russia, Japan, and the US Following the powerful earthquake, tsunami alerts were issued across multiple countries in the Pacific region. In Russia, Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko ordered the evacuation of the small town of Severo-Kurilsk, located south of the Kamchatka Peninsula, citing the tsunami threat. Russia's Ministry for Emergency Services said a wave of up to 32 centimetres could reach parts of the Kamchatka coastline, reported Reuters. In the US, the US Tsunami Warning Centre issued tsunami warnings for Alaska's Aleutian Islands and the state of Hawaii. A tsunami watch was placed for the US West Coast, covering California, Oregon and Washington, as well as the US territory of Guam. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency has activated its Emergency Operations Centre in response, ABC News reported. A tsunami watch was extended to the US territory of Guam and other islands in Micronesia as officials monitored the developing situation. Japan issues advisory from Hokkaido to Kyushu Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for broad swathes of the country's Pacific coastline, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south. It warned that waves of up to 1 metre could hit Hokkaido around 10:00 am (local time), with other regions such as eastern Honshu and southern Kyushu expected to be affected later in the day. Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that the epicentre of the quake was about 250 kilometres from Hokkaido, where the tremor was only mildly felt and no damage has been reported so far, reported Reuters. The Kamchatka Peninsula and Russia's Far East lie on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly active seismic zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Houthis say they hold 10 crew from Greek-operated ship they sank off Yemen

Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis said on Monday (July 28, 2025) they had rescued 10 seafarers from the Greek-operated cargo ship Eternity C, which they attacked and sank in the Red Sea earlier this month. The Liberia-flagged Eternity C was the second ship to sink off Yemen this month after repeated attacks by Houthi militants with sea drones and rocket-propelled grenades. Another Greek-operated vessel, the Magic Seas, had gone down days earlier. The Philippine government confirmed on Tuesday nine of the rescued seafarers were Filipinos. Migrant workers minister Hans Cacdac said the sailors were in "good physical condition" based on accounts from their families, and that the government was working to secure their release and safe return. The strikes on the two vessels marked a revival of attacks on shipping by the Houthis, who hit more than 100 ships between November 2023 and December 2024 in what they said was a show of solidarity with the Palestinians in the war in Gaza. The Eternity C crew and three armed guards were forced to abandon the ship following the attacks. Ten people were rescued by a privately-led mission, while five more are feared dead mainly due to the attacks. A further 10 people were believed to be held by Houthis, maritime security sources had told Reuters. On Monday, the Houthis group released a six-minute video showing pictures of the 10 seafarers with some of them contacting their families. They also showed testimonies saying that the crew members were not aware of a maritime ban by Houthis against vessels sailing to Israeli ports. They said the vessel was heading to Israel's Eilat Port to load fertilizers. Reuters could not independently verify the footage. In what they called phase four of their military operations, the Houthis said on Sunday they would target any ships belonging to companies that do business with Israeli ports, regardless of their nationalities. Following the recent attacks, Greece said it would deploy a salvage vessel in the Red Sea to assist in maritime accidents and protect seafarers and global shipping.

Chilean police recover Keanu Reeves' stolen luxury watches in raid; hands them over to the FBI

Chilean authorities said Tuesday they turned six valuable watches stolen from Canadian actor - including an engraved Rolex worth at least $9,500 - over to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, months after recovering them in a police raid. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The FBI will arrange for their return to Reeves, best known for his roles in action franchises like " The Matrix " and " John Wick." Chilean prosecutors told reporters that Reeves had identified the watches as those stolen from his Los Angeles home during a string of high-profile burglaries in December 2023. The announcement was made as the Trump administration's Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, arrived in the South American country for meetings with Chilean officials about transnational crime, among other issues. Noem was also the victim of a robbery attributed to a Chilean national residing illegally in the U.S., when her purse was stolen last April at a Washington restaurant. Reeves' six watches are valued at a total of $125,000, said Marcelo Varas, a police officer from Chile's robbery investigation squad. The watches stolen from Reeves' Hollywood Hills home turned up in Santiago, Chile's capital, when police raided homes and uncovered stolen cars, iPhones, luxury watches and designer purses. That operation coincided with another Chilean investigation, coordinated with the FBI, into a spate of burglaries by South America-based crime groups targeting multimillion-dollar homes in the U.S., many belonging to celebrities and professional athletes, such as Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce. In April, police in Chile announced the arrest of 23 citizens over the string of break-ins. Varas said authorities were still investigating any link between the theft of Reeves' watches and the other high-profile burglaries.
