NCAA names Samford's Martin Newton and BYU's Liz Darger as 2026-27 basketball committee chairs
Samford athletic director Martin Newton will head the men's committee and BYU senior associate athletic director Liz Darger will lead the women's.
Newton will serve as vice chair for the coming season, supporting Sun Belt Conference commissioner and 2025-26 chair Keith Gill. Newton played basketball for Samford in the early 1980s and has served on the Division I Council and the Men's Basketball Oversight Committee.
Darger, the women's vice chair this year, will take over for Milwaukee athletic director and chair Amanda Braun. Darger was an assistant coach at Utah Valley for six years before going into sports administration at BYU in 2015.
The NCAA said announcing the top 16 seeds on the day before Selection Sunday would allow host sites more time to set up its tournament operations. The top 16 will be provided in alphabetical order.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres acquired hard-throwing closer Mason Miller and left-hander JP Sears in a deal with the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, adding major upgrades to their pitching staff in a trade deadline blockbuster. Jets' Quinnen Williams leaves practice after tweaking calf, Braelon Allen sits out with sore knee
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams left practice early Thursday after tweaking a calf muscle. Williams was participating in individual drills when he felt discomfort in his lower leg. He walked into the facility under his own power, but sat out the rest of the practice session. There was no immediate update from the Jets on Williams' injury or if he might miss any time. Coach Aaron Glenn wasn't scheduled to speak to reporters until Friday morning after practice. The 27-year-old Williams is a key part of New York's defense and a three-time Pro Bowl selection who was also an All-Pro during the 2022 season. He had six sacks last season, giving him 39 for his career since being drafted with the third overall pick in 2019 out of Alabama. Williams anchors a new-look D-line for the Jets, who also have Micheal Clemons, Will McDonald, Rashad Weaver, Jay Tufele, Derrick Nnadi, Byron Cowart and youngsters such as Payton Page, Leonard Taylor and Eric Watts competing for spots. Second-year running back Braelon Allen missed his second consecutive practice with soreness in his left knee. Maddy Siegrist set to return for Wings after missing 17 games with knee fracture
DALLAS (AP) — Maddy Siegrist is set to return for the Dallas Wings after missing seven weeks with a fracture in her right knee. Siegrist will be available for Friday night's game against the Indiana Fever at the home of the Dallas Mavericks, the team said Thursday. It's the second time the Wings will play at American Airlines Center. They faced the Fever there in late June, losing 94-86 when Caitlin Clark was sidelined by a groin injury. Clark returned after that but has missed the past five Indiana games with the same injury. Siegrist, the NCAA Division I scoring leader ahead of Clark when she played for Villanova in 2022-23, has missed the past 17 games with the knee injury. Injuries limited her to 11 games as a rookie two years ago. Siegrist has averaged 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in 11 games and had her only double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 boards the game before she was injured, an 81-65 loss to Minnesota on June 8. ___ AP WNBA:
