Four crashes in a month: DGCA cracks down on unsafe Char Dham chopper operations; may curtail operations there
NEW DELHI: Chopper operations for the ongoing Char Dham yatra in Uttarakhand may be curtailed following a spate of crashes in recent weeks. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday said it has 'ordered special audits and enhanced surveillance for helicopter operators involved in shuttle services and charter operations in Uttarakhand.
' The last one month alone has seen four crashes and the regulator has decided to get cracking on erring operators. 'As a precautionary measure, DGCA is reviewing the necessity of curtailing helicopter operations to Char Dham if required,' the regulator said in a statement Monday.
Oversight on Char Dham helicopter operations have been enhanced by 'actively monitoring live camera feeds provided by Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) at Kedarnath.
Any deviation from standard operating procedures (SOP) by helicopter operators is detected in real time, allowing for immediate corrective measures,' the DGCA said in a statement.
On Monday, two helicopter operators conducting shuttle and charter services to Kedarnath from their respective helipads were found to have failed to adhere to SOPs, particularly regarding proper helicopter parking procedures. 'As a result, swift action was taken, and their operations were suspended for two hours.

DGCA has zero tolerance policy for safety violations and in its latest enforcement action the operations Kestrel Aviation Pvt Ltd in Uttarakhand has been suspended with immediate effect pending investigation.
This is further to suspension of operations of another operator for safety violations in the month of May, 2025,' the statement added.
A Kestrel Aviation flying from Badasu to Kedarnath had last week made an emergency landing on a highway in Rudraprayag district after developing a technical issue during take off.
A part of the chopper had crashed into an empty stationary car below. Luckily all six people on board the private chopper were safe.
The regulator noted that 'recently multiple occurrences involving helicopter operations during Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand have underscored the necessity for further strengthening the safety oversight of these operations. Safety investigation has been initiated for each of these occurrences to identify contributing factors, including mechanical failures, operational errors, and weather-related challenges.

'Directives have been issued to all helicopter operators, restricting operations to OGE conditions till further order.,' a DGAC statement said. OGE is 'out of ground effect' where a helicopter hovers above a certain height where the ground doesn't significantly influence the downwash from the rotor. This means helicopters need more power to maintain their altitude because there's less ground-assisted lift.

Kozhikode/Kochi: A major fire broke out on board a Singapore-flagged vessel, MV Wan Hai 503, after a container explosion 44 nautical miles off the Azhikkal coast in Kannur on Monday, barely two weeks after a container ship sank off Thottappilly, Alappuzha. Eighteen crew members were rescued, while four are missing. The vessel, which departed from the port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, with 22 crew onboard on Friday, was estimated to reach the Nhava Sheva Port, Mumbai, on Tuesday. "Of the 18 rescued crew, one is reported to have sustained serious injuries. Four crew members, including two Taiwanese, one Indonesian and one Myanmarese, are missing from the time of the explosion," a statement said. As per the cargo manifest of the ship accessed by TOI, the vessel carries "dangerous" cargo as per IMO (International Maritime Organisation) classification in as many as 157 containers. As of 12.40 pm, the resulting fire spread to other containers, and the crew abandoned the vessel in life rafts. INS Surat, diverted by the Indian Navy, rescued 18 survivors and took them to Mangalore port for disembarkation and further procedures by evening. The incident occurred around 9.20am, around 88 nautical miles off Beypore and 130 nautical miles northwest of Kochi. An official statement said preliminary reports suggested that 1,015 containers have fallen overboard. The crew members included eight Chinese, six Taiwanese, five Myanmarese and three Indonesian nationals. Besides two Dornier aircraft equipped with life rafts for aerial surveillance and situational assessment, the ICG has mobilised five ships, including specialised firefighting and pollution response vessels, to the incident site. The details of the cargo onboard are being ascertained to determine the nature of the fire and the potential risks involved during firefighting operations. Efforts will also be undertaken to deter the vessel from closing in on the coast, it said.

Nitish inspects Ganga stream revival work in Bakhtiyarpur
Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Monday inspected the ongoing work to revive the old stream of Ganga river from Ghansurpur Ghat to Dadour Ghat under Bakhtiyarpur block in Patna district. He asked the officials to complete the old stream revival work before the arrival of monsoon this year. During the inspection, principal secretary of the water resources department, Santosh Kumar Mall, provided detailed information about the progress and current status of the work to the CM. The CM gave several necessary instructions to the officials. He asked the officials to speed up the work to ensure its completion before the monsoon. "Once the development work around the Sirhi Ghat and its vicinity is completed, it will provide significant convenience to visitors," Nitish said. Under this project, a total length of 4,420 metres is being dredged from the village of Ghansurpur to Dadour in Bakhtiyarpur block of Patna district to revive the old and dying course of the Ganga river. The administrative approval for this project is Rs 3427.80 lakh. DGCA mulling restricting helicopter operations to Char Dham, two operators suspended for violating rules
NEW DELHI: In light of the recent mishaps involving a Kestrel Aviation helicopter at Uttarakhand on Saturday (June 7) and a spate of accidents in the recent past along the Char Dham route, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday said it is considering curtailing helicopter operations in Uttarakhand. In a related development, two shuttle operators ferrying to Kedarnath were found to have violated the Standard Operating Protocol (SOP) on Monday and their operations were temporarily suspended. An official release from DGCA said, "Directives have been issued to all helicopter operators, restricting operations to OGE (Out of Ground Effect) conditions until further orders. As a precautionary measure, DGCA is also reviewing the necessity of curtailing the helicopter operations to Char Dham if required. " Elaborating on OGE, a senior DGCA official said that this permitted only less load to be carried in each aircraft. "For Kedarnath operations if done in OGE, it will entail a minimum of one passenger less in every sortie for AS350 type of helicopter. For Bell 407 type of helicopter, operations will have to be curtailed to only one or two shuttles followed by a refuelling halt." Presently, operations are in IGE (In Ground Effect) and this allows a higher amount of load to be carried.
