UK business activity rises to one-year high as services sector leads rebound

Business activity across the UK's private sector has hit a one-year high this month, as the services industry led a summer rebound, according to new survey data. Firms nevertheless have been cutting hiring for 11 months in a row. S&P Global flash UK composite purchasing managers' index (PMI) showed a reading of 53.0 in August, up from 51.5 in July. This was the highest score since August 2024. The flash figures are based on preliminary data. Any score above 50.0 indicates that activity is growing while any score below means it is contracting. Growth this month was primarily driven by the service sector, the largest part of the UK's economy, spanning industries including hospitality, entertainment and culture, finance and real estate. Businesses typically pointed to improved demand conditions after the spring, when the threat of US President Donald Trump's tariff changes was affecting demand from abroad. Services firms have enjoyed new work coming in over August and benefited from rising sales at home and overseas, the survey showed. Chris Williamson, chief business economist for S&P Global Market Intelligence, said economic growth 'continued to accelerate over the summer after a sluggish spring'. He said: 'The services sector has led the expansion, but manufacturing also showed further signs of stabilising.' However, he flagged that the demand environment was 'uneven and fragile' amid 'unease emanating from broader geopolitical uncertainty'. For the UK's manufacturing sector, output continued to decline this month, and firms recorded the sharpest decline in new work since April. Furthermore, total workforce numbers decreased for the 11th month in a row in August, according to the PMI survey. Businesses surveyed have been cutting staffing levels or slowing the pace of hiring in response to greater cost pressures. Input cost inflation rose to the highest rate since May, reflecting higher prices such as for food, transport bills, and international shipping. For another month running, firms said suppliers were passing on higher national insurance contributions through pricing. In turn, private sector businesses have been hiking their own prices charged to customers – particularly those in the services industry as they grapple with higher staff costs.

Airport workers to strike in dispute over ‘poverty pay offer'

Airport workers are to take strike action in a dispute over an 'insulting poverty pay offer'. Unite the union said more than 100 OCS Group workers based at Edinburgh Airport will take part in a series of 48-hour stoppages next month. The workers provide support for passengers with reduced mobility, including assisting with wheelchairs and ambulift vehicles. Unite said the action comes after workers 'overwhelmingly' rejected an offer from OCS management of £12.60 an hour, matching the Scottish living wage minimum rate. Carrie Binnie, Unite industrial officer, said: 'OCS workers are vital to assisting passengers with mobility issues at Edinburgh Airport. 'The company's management should be valuing and rewarding the workers, instead it has tabled an insulting poverty pay offer. 'OCS has a matter of days to resolve this dispute before strike action starts, which will be entirely its fault.' The two-day strike action will take place over September 3-4, 7-8, 11-12, 14-15, 18-19, 21-22, and 25-26. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: 'Unite's OCS membership have had enough and they are fully prepared to fight back through strike action to secure fair pay. 'We will back our members all the way in their fight for better jobs, pay, and conditions at Edinburgh Airport.' OCS Group has been asked for comment.

£50m forward DELIGHTED to give green light to Liverpool swap deal

Liverpool's transfer campaign this summer has seen the club spend around £290m. And in an effort to balance the books, they have parted ways with plenty of talent. However with Ben Doak joining Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz on the exit list - not to forget the tragic passing of Diogo Jota - it's left the Reds somewhat light on attackers. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Richard Hughes has completed deals for Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike but there is a suggestion that at least one more forward could be recruited this summer. Alexander Isak is the priority with the club keen to add the Newcastle man as the new No9 at Anfield. But a wide forward could also be coming in - and the Reds have also been linked with high-calibre players like Rodrygo and Bradley Barcola. Kubo keen on Liverpool move One more face which is familiar to Liverpool recruiters is Takefusa Kubo. The 24-year-old Real Sociedad winger has been on the radar for a couple of seasons now. A new report in Defensa Central now claims that the Japan international even gave his consent to a move to Liverpool as part of a convoluted swap deal involving Real Madrid. 'Real Madrid spoke with Real Sociedad after Liverpool showed some interest in the situation of Take Kubo a few weeks ago, a player whose rights the Merengues hold 50% and for whom the Blue and Whites are hoping to get 60 million euros (£52m),' the report reads. 'In fact, the white club even considered giving up the 25-30 million euros they would earn from selling the Japanese player, this being half of the transfer fee, in exchange for keeping Ibrahima Konaté.' Madrid's Konate plan fails So in effect it is claimed that: Liverpool approached Real Sociedad over Kubo and Real Madrid were willing to waive their share in any profits from the deal so long as Konate moved to the Bernabeu. Kubo was described as 'up for it', believing a move to Anfield would be a significant step up in his career. 'This is something the Japanese footballer himself was aware of, and he would be delighted to leave San Sebastián for Liverpool, given the leap in quality it would bring to his career,' the report states. However, this plan hit the buffers almost immediately. Kubo a Salah-type winger Despite reportedly sounding out Sociedad over a deal for Kubo, Liverpool backed off quickly and have since cooled their interest. They also wouldn't want to lose Konate under any circumstances - even if an unofficial asking price of €50m has been floated in the Spanish media. Kubo has made a good start to the LaLiga season - being one of Sociedad's standout players in their opening day draw against Valencia. The left-footer scored and was a constant menace besides. He is seen as a Mo Salah-type figure - cutting in from the right - and could certainly be a useful pick-up for the Reds in a remodelled attack. However giving up Konate was seen by Liverpool as too big a price to pay.
