Work begins for complex at Command Hospital in Bengaluru
BENGALURU: Foundation stone was laid for the construction of a new modern multi-storied hospital complex at Command Hospital Air Force Bengaluru here on Tuesday. Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C), Training Command, unveiled the foundation stone in the presence of Air Marshal, Director General Medical Services (Air), Sandeep Thareja from the Air HQ.
The present structure of the Command Hospital is 157 years old and can handle an OPD of nearly 3 lakh patients, with 21,000 admissions yearly. According to a press release, with the increasing workload, along with the need to incorporate rapid advancements in healthcare technology, the hospital demands a modern infrastructure with adequate scope for expansion in the future.
The project on completion shall be a state-of-the-art 800-bed facility, with 16 modular operation theatres, modern ICUs, high-end diagnostic services including advanced imaging and laboratory facilities with a pneumatic chute system.
Intelligent design components of the hospital, like OPDs on lower floors, spacious lifts and escalators, will offer convenient access for patients, including the differently-abled. Digitisation and an Integrated Hospital Information System will reduce patient wait times.
The facility will adhere to GRIHA 3-star norms, incorporating rainwater harvesting systems, solar power generation of one megawatt capacity and a high capacity effluent treatment plant contributing towards a sustainable and environment friendly ecosystem, the release added.

Anjali chose medical science as her optional subject. Despite working long 12-hour night shifts and attending coaching without proper rest, she made the most of her days for studying. Anjali Garg cleared the UPSC Civil Services(Main) Examination, 2022 with All India Rank(AIR) 79. She scored 822 marks in the written examination, 179 in the personality test. State expands ‘white category' industries list, experts say hospitals cannot be on it
Chennai: To simplify regulations and promote industrial growth, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) expanded 'white category' industries list in the state from 37 to 609. These industries, recognised for their minimal to 'no-pollution' potential, will be exempt from obtaining consent under legislation to prevent air and water pollution following ratification from the environment and forests department, senior TNPCB officials April 30, the board said these white category industries are exempt from obtaining consent under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. "The decision reflects the govt's commitment to promoting ease of doing business and sustainable industrial development without compromising on environmental safeguards . The process can be streamlined, reducing procedural delays and fostering economic growth," an official officials conducted a comparative analysis with states such as Karnataka, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh to identify industries with negligible environmental impact. The newly included sectors primarily involve dry mechanical and manual processes, packaging, assembly, and renewable energy component activities, all meeting stringent pollution index criteria, they said. For instance, manufacture of rope, paper clips, and assembling units for electric lamps and electrical items, and manufacture of blocks from fly ash. "We submitted the resolution to the state. If the proposal is approved, it will reduce regulatory hurdles for non-polluting small-scale industries, attract investments, and foster economic growth without compromising environmental safeguards," the official experts have objected to the addition of healthcare establishments, including clinics and nursing homes below 30 beds in this category. The move overlooks the biomedical waste generated by small hospitals, which often conduct deliveries, minor surgeries, and dialysis. Biomedical waste contains infectious or potentially infectious material. "Small hospitals can generate trade effluents, emissions from equipment such as incinerators and DG sets, and sewage requiring treatment. It will not meet the non-polluting criteria," said S Sadasivan, whose NGO has sent a written objection to the board. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines mandate biomedical waste (BMW) authorisation for all healthcare facilities, regardless of size, to ensure proper disposal, he warn that exempting these facilities could lead to improper waste handling and disposal. This waste can harbour pathogens and lead to the spread of infectious diseases.

NGT issues notice to TDI City over non-functional STPs, water pollution
MOHALI : The National Green Tribunal ( NGT ) has issued a show-cause notice to TDI City for serious environmental violations, including the failure of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and uncontrolled sewage flow into a vacant plot owned by the developer. This action follows findings submitted by a joint committee formed by the NGT to investigate complaints about untreated wastewater and water stagnation in the area. The joint committee — comprising representatives from the district magistrate's office, Punjab State Pollution Control Board (PPCB), and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) — conducted a site inspection with the applicant, Vijay Kumar Pathania, and representatives of TDI Developers . CPCB was designated as the nodal agency for coordination and compliance. According to the committee's report, no functional drainage system exists in the vicinity. Nearby agricultural landowners were forced to construct an embankment to protect their fields from contamination, resulting in water stagnation on a vacant plot belonging to Emaar Group, located behind TDI City. Investigations also revealed that untreated wastewater from Green Enclave, a nearby colony in Daun Majra village, was being discharged directly onto this undeveloped plot. During the inspection, the committee found that the sewage treatment infrastructure installed by TDI Developers was inadequate and non-compliant. Specifically, a 100 KLD STP failed to meet biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) standards, while a larger 2.5 MLD STP exceeded acceptable levels of total suspended solids (TSS). Both plants also failed to meet the faecal coliform standards set under PPCB guidelines, which require levels below 1,000 MPN/100 ml. PPCB noted in its report that while the STPs complied with pH, BOD, and TSS norms per its 2019 notification, they failed on critical microbiological parameters. The stagnation and contamination were further exacerbated by the illegal diversion of sewerage from an unauthorised colony into the affected area. Based on the findings and recommendations of the joint committee, NGT directed the issuance of a show-cause notice to TDI Township located in sectors 74-A, 92, 116, 117, 118, and 119. The notice cites violations under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. It provides the developer an opportunity to be heard. Water samples collected during the inspection are under analysis, and regulatory action on this is expected depending on the final test results.
