A microscopic discovery in a California lake sparked buzz and controversy more than a decade ago when it was first revealed.
Scientists said they'd discovered bacteria that used the element arsenic — poisonous to life as we know it — to grow. If true, it expanded the possibilities for where life could exist on Earth — or on other worlds.
Several research groups failed to replicate the results, and argue it's not possible for a living thing to use something so toxic to make DNA and proteins. Some scientists have suggested the results of the original experiments may have been skewed by undetected contaminants.
On Thursday, the journal Science, which first published the research, retracted it, though not because of misconduct on the researchers' part.
'If the editors determine that a paper's reported experiments do not support its key conclusions, even if no fraud or manipulation occurred, a retraction is considered appropriate,' the journal's editor-in-chief Holden Thorp wrote in the statement announcing the retraction.
The researchers disagree with the journal's decision and stand by their data. It's reasonable to pull a paper for major errors or suspected misconduct — but debates and disagreements over the findings are part of the scientific process, said study co-author Ariel Anbar of Arizona State University.
'One doesn't retract a paper because the interpretation is controversial, or even because most disagree with the interpretation,' wrote Anbar in an email. 'At least, that hasn't been the case until now.'
Science has more frequently retracted papers for reasons beside fraud in recent years, said Thorp and Vada Vinson, Science's executive editor, wrote in a blog post.
NASA helped fund the original work. The space agency's science mission chief Nicky Fox said in a statement that NASA does not support the retraction and encourages Science to reconsider.

Scientists say they've finally solved the mystery behind what happens just before lightning strikes. While famous inventor and U.S. Founding Father Benjamin Franklin discovered the connection between lightning and electricity back in 1752, experts still had not fully understood the journey from the cloud to the ground more than 270 years later. 'Our findings provide the first precise, quantitative explanation for how lightning initiates in nature," Victor Pasko, a professor of electrical engineering in the Penn State School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, said in a statement announcing the findings. "It connects the dots between X-rays, electric fields and the physics of electron avalanches." So, what's the deal with the atmospheric processes that trigger the giant, explosive sparks of electricity that can heat the air to a temperature five times hotter than the surface of the sun? According to Pasko and his team, the powerful chain reaction works similarly to an invisible pinball machine. Inside the storm clouds, strong electric fields speed up electrons that crash into molecules, such as nitrogen and oxygen. The reactions produce electromagnetic radiation commonly known as X-rays, as well as even more electrons and high-energy photons. Photons are the fundamental particles that make up light. After this, the lightning bolts are born. Atmospheric scientists knew how charged particles react within clouds. Protons rise and electrons descend toward the ground, resulting in a positive electric charge building on the ground. When that positive charge 'reaches out' to the approaching negative charge and the channels connect, the electrical transfer is what we see as lightning, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. To reach these new conclusions, the international authors used mathematical modeling, simulating the physical conditions in which a lightning bolt is likely to originate. 'We explained how photoelectric events occur, what conditions need to be in thunderclouds to initiate the cascade of electrons, and what is causing the wide variety of radio signals that we observe in clouds all prior to a lightning strike,' Zaid Pervez, a doctoral student in electrical engineering, said. 'To confirm our explanation on lightning initiation, I compared our results to previous modeling, observation studies and my own work on a type of lightning called compact intercloud discharges, which usually occur in small, localized regions in thunderclouds.' They also sought to explain observations of what is known as 'dark lightning' or a terrestrial gamma-ray flash. The invisible X-ray bursts are comprised of the flashes, which are produced in our atmosphere. They're often produced without flashes of light and radio bursts, which are familiar hallmarks of lightning during stormy weather. The researchers wanted to know why. 'In our modeling, the high-energy X-rays produced by relativistic electron avalanches generate new seed electrons driven by the photoelectric effect in air, rapidly amplifying these avalanches,' Pasko said. 'In addition to being produced in very compact volumes, this runaway chain reaction can occur with highly variable strength, often leading to detectable levels of X-rays, while accompanied by very weak optical and radio emissions. This explains why these gamma-ray flashes can emerge from source regions that appear optically dim and radio silent.'

Because that's what f**** us.' 3I/ATLAS was first identified on July 1 in data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. A team of more than 200 researchers determined that the object's nucleus, the solid core of a comet, is roughly 3.5 miles wide, and its appearance suggests it contains large amounts of ice and dust in a surrounding cloud known as a coma. However, Loeb recently challenged this classification in a preprint study published on arXiv. Loeb and his team found that 3I/ATLAS appears to lack a coma altogether, raising doubts about whether it is a natural object. According to the Harvard professor, the absence of a coma could mean the object isn't a comet at all but something artificial. 'The consequences, should the hypothesis turn out to be correct, could potentially be dire for humanity, and would possibly require defensive measures to be undertaken (though these might prove futile),' the study warned. Loeb's theory draws from a bleak scientific concept known as the Dark Forest Hypothesis, which suggests that intelligent civilizations may remain silent or act preemptively to eliminate threats, meaning they could view humanity as something to destroy before it becomes dangerous. 'As a scientist, I respond to evidence collected by instruments, the professor shared in a blog post on Wednesday. 'As of now, we have anomalies but we need more data on 3I/ATLAS or other interstellar objects in order to ascertain whether any one of them is technological in origin. 'Once we find an interstellar artifact beyond a reasonable doubt, the next step will be to figure out its technological capabilities and intent.'

A breakthrough new drug could halt the progression of Alzheimer's disease, claim researchers. Trials suggest the drug—called trontinemab—could be the most powerful weapon against dementia yet, slowing down the progression of the memory-robbing disease. Scientists will now consider whether the jab could be given to those who have not yet been diagnosed with the condition in order to prevent symptoms developing in later life. According to research presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference, Toronto, the 'game-changing' treatment can clear the toxic plaque thought to be behind Alzheimer's symptoms faster than any other licensed drug. The researchers described the findings as being 'very promising', adding that the drug caused far fewer side effects than existing medications. Professor Sir John Hardy, chairman of neurological disease at University College London, told The Telegraph: 'There is no doubt this could be game-changing. 'It sucks the plaque out of the brain really quickly, much faster then we have seen with [existing medications] lacanemab or donanemab.' In the current trial, 90 per cent of patients prescribed the drug experienced clearance of amyloid—a toxic protein that can form plaques and tangles in the brain, interfering with memory processes—within 28 weeks of starting the treatment. This, experts say, means visible markers of the disease had disappeared. In a follow-up of 18-months, researchers hope these biological changes will facilitate improvements in memory and decision making, with 1,600 patients enrolled on the trial. Currently around one million people in the UK are thought to suffer from dementia, with Alzheimer's disease the most common form. Recent analysis by the Alzheimer's Society estimates the overall annual cost of the dementia to the UK is £42billion a year, with families bearing the brunt. An ageing population means these costs, which include the lost earnings of unpaid carers, are set to soar to £90billion in the next 15 years. But, experts hope that if given early enough, the drug could halt Alzheimer's completely, saving some patients from developing symptoms entirely. 'We hope if we can give these drugs to people early, we can halt the progression of the disease even before people have symptoms,' Prof Hardy—who was the first to identify the role of amyloid in the disease—added. And, because the drug can cross the blood-brain barrier more easily than other current treatments, promising powerful effects at low doses, it could be offered at a far lower price. Together with the lack of side-effects, this could see the drug become the first Alzheimer's treatment to be funded by the NHS, experts say. Prof Hardy continued: 'The results show it is much fast and safer than previous drugs, which means less monitoring. 'That brings down the cost significantly, it means fewer MRI scans, to that would surely mean it could get NICE [National Institute of Health and Care Excellence] approval.' Last year, health watchdogs in the UK gave the green light for two so-called 'wonder' drugs, lacanemab and donanemab which experts claim could slow down the memory-robbing illness in its early stages. Both the drugs use antibodies to clear toxic plaques in the brain—but some experts have warned that donanemab could cause life-threatening brain bleeds in a third of patients. This new drug appears to be a lot safer, scientists say, with less than five per cent of patients suffering complications in the second phase of trials. Prof Jonathan Schott, chief medical officer at Alzheimer's Research UK said: 'The evidence on trontinemab is very promising, showing that the drug can effectively and rapidly clear amyloid from the brain, seemingly with very few side effects. 'We now need to see whether these early stage results carry through to later stage clinical trials, which are planned to start later this year, including in the UK. 'These trials will show whether the drug is not only safe, but impacts on memory, thinking and quality of life.' Levi Garraway, the chief medical officer of the manufacturing company, Roche, added: 'With plans for phase three trials in both early symptomatic and preclinical Alzheimer's disease, we are advancing science with the goal of delaying – and ultimately preventing – progression of this devastating condition.'
